I’ve always been a big pro-helmeteer as it always feels a bit daft to have the galaxy’s second most expensive warriors inside the galaxy’s second (or third?) most expensive set of armour and leave your chops free for a sniper to use as target practice.

However, if I give a model a refractor shield or Iron Halo my mind argues that the intrepid astartes isn’t quite as daft as he appears to be, and sometimes a model justifies a bare head because it’s cool.

This is my  platoon (he might get promoted to company) champion so far both with and without a helmet. This is him with the rest of the command squad so far (medic, vox and a ranged marine still to add). My only real concern is that if he’s helmet less and the rest are all helmed will he kinda look like the boss? Lieutenant is the power fist fella, I’m just waiting on a MkVI helmet and crest to arrive. The guy on the right will have the platoon vexilla.

Any suggestions/opinions appreciated:)

Looking good!  I've only gone oops all helmets as I have a ton of models to paint across so many ranges (GW and historicals) rather than lore reasons.

In answer to your actual question, currently the unhelmetted (sic?!) guy does look like the boss of the squad, but I'd hold out until you get the crest helmet to compare it against.  In a similar vain if there are a mix of helmets and bare heads in a squad, but only one guy has the crest that might also make it obvious that crest guy is the sergeant / leader.

I'd also look at how people do their space wolves as those kits encourage a mix of helmets and bare heads

PS Which models are your starting point?  Your conversion work is excellent!

Thanks for the input, I shall be a patient legion commander! Good shout re the Wolves. 95% of my lads are helmeted right now, I have a rebreather and a guy who has half a helmet, courtesy of some violence.

Starting models are all primaris - I prefer the scale, the downside is that I have to convert every marine but when I do my guard/Admech eventually the scales should look correct.

left to right: Assault Intercessor, September model of the month (blood claw I think), and Hellblaster.

now that I’ve worked out my army structure I think I may migrate my WIP to this sub forum

Well, an unhelmed head it's really good for sarges and other heroic/suicide miniatures (the best way to kill an Astartes, and the fastest and more secure it's a massive injury in the head. Like a shot in the temple or righ between the eyes),so if you are going to make it a sarge/character/etc, bare head. Just try to no repeat the model of the head, unless you are playing AL.

Personally,I like more helmeted heads, specially if they have crest or are adorned with topknots or similar, but in my personal case is because I'm terrible painting faces and eyes..

In that miniature you are showing in the post, I think better bare head than with helmet.

What Legion?

It does actually inform my thoughts on helmets. Some Legions just lend themselves better to it.

Space Wolves can't show off their magnificent facial hair with a helmet but I would imagine that Perturabo would kill any Iron Warrior not wearing a helmet himself.
