Captain Idaho
Morning all. Looking at the new incoming Nightbringer model and you know what... I don't like it. I liked the concept of the the slow but inevitable death type character of the Nightbringer and unfortunately the angle of the body and the way he's leaning forward completely obscures this character. He looks like he's dashing forward like some sort of anime character or a video game dash attack. Here: What I'd like is a theme of inescapable death, or impending doom, which the following art illustrates nicely: We haven't the model in hand, but I think the fix I'd need could be to have the face looking straight out from his body, level with his chest, whilst making him more upright. So it would look like kinda like this: But I also imagine the way GW makes it's models that it would be impossible with regards to the head and incrediblely different and potentially impossible with regDd to the angle of the body. What's the gut feeling or advice here people might have on this? Maybe a completely alternate model to 40Kify? Something from AoS or beyond? I'm alright with Green Stuff, but just not sure I can do it and maintain stability since that looks quite thin in it's attachment to the base. And the head is attached to the neck by the looks of it. NTaW
My gut says this would be an extravagant conversion if you were to try and modify this model to be face-forward and rotated. The head turn would likely require the existing hood to be totally cut away and the face separated with a full hood resculpt. The difficulty would be based on your experience, though a hood may be more forgiving than something more symmetrical. The rotation I think would destabilize the model and require something strong to maintain balance. The new hunched forward look might be more Quasimodo than menacing, but that's open to the final angles and onlookers interpretation. Now I'm curious to see the sprues. That will really let you know how much work there may be involved. Have you considered third party options? Personally I haven't seen many I vibe with but there's a fair few out there from various digital sculptors, and I imagine that selection will grow once the model is released. Captain Idaho
Oh that's a good point, the destabilising effect of shifting the model is likely a bigger issue than the hood. Not sure on 3rd party options. Hard to find things I like there which aren't too... extravagant let's just say. NTaW
You could always put a weight in the base to help with the balance. This model is significantly larger than the half metal models of yesteryear but that also means the base is larger and can hold something of substance underneath. I agree with the extravagance of 3rd party sculpts. Once the current model is discontinued there will likely be faithful options posted, if I want a scaled up Newbringer I'd be tempted to print the old one at 200% and pop it on a pedestal of old scarabs and the new base size. It's one of my favourite GW models anyway and I don't really click with the new design touches. Captain Idaho
You know, I've got a printer after all and that means I'm gonna have a go tonight! 200 percent and we'll see how it goes! (Yes I have a suitable STL ) You're a genius! I mean, I can even print 2 so I can play around and convert it as well. NTaW
Ooo you could try opening up the model in meshmixer or something and make some rough adjustments, then physically sculpt over the weird bits with GS after printing. At least that's what I'd have to do. I'm a butcher digitally but can work decently enough with my hands. Bonzi
Personal opinion but I think you could do away with the face altogether. Just leave a void in the hood and paint it the darkest black you can manage. Death shouldn't have a face. I don't know if that solves and of your other problems though. I think the scythe is the hardest change if you want to remove the action from the model. That handle is modeled into the flapping robes behind the head as an attachment point. Very hard to change that. You know, I gave the same advice to a Death Guard player once when they complained about the comical face on a hooded character. They drilled out the face and it ended up looking pretty cool painted up.
