Don't put too much into it. I don't often defend GW's actions, but in this case, they certainly don't have to do anything. They didn't years ago. But if I were to weigh in, I would rather each day have an article, preview, painting video, or short story and zero rules. Hell, I'd just be happy with a big reveal on christmas day. The games have enough clutter, don't need more half-arsed rules let alone anything that is only good for a handful of months before a new edition.

You state this like the Grotmas detachments overall weren't well received. There were very few duds in there.

Not necessarily, but since you brought it up, yes, many were not well received. Some were duds. I can't remember if one in particular was overpowered and required a quick fix.

They only changed the ork one iirc? But this is a really weird stance to take that because one or two might not be perfect nobody should get anything.

I don't think its weird it all to reduce clutter, minimize rules, and not throw out something that may only be useful for a handful of months. Better spent energy on on articles, story, and painting tips.

It's makes for a significantly less interesting Grotmas calendar which is particularly annoying because last year's offering was generally considered very good.

The current declaration of a reduced Grotmas is already a concern for a decent chunk of the community, so I feel if they'd announced a Grotmas with NO rules content we'd have an even more visceral response to it.

As someone that doesn't interact with the game side of the hobby, I'm legally mandated to disagree. This year's grotmas calendar having stuff besides rules means there's at least something for me to look forward to.

I'd rather have an advent rumour engine again, but no such luck.

Hard disagree, but to each their own.

The problem is it feels kind of an excuse to just have the usual articles and "giftwrap" them.

Every day a painting tutorial for something different ? thats an advent calendar.. as is everyday a detachment, everyday a new story, everyday a rumor engine, but what they announced now is there will be a warhammer related article every day... wich is basically just the description of the warhammer community site.

its naturally premature etc. and in the least not very fair to look at it this way.. but its like getting socks, they are objectively speaking among the best gifts... but they are still just socks, if it makes any sense.

I dont fully agree or disagree with either position ( what a suprise ) but I can understand the feeling. And while I lean much more to the hobbyside, I dont really like tutorials of any kind. ( never did ) I rather experiment myself, so for me, those would be socks that are just not my color.

You know what would be great actually ( and, to keep the anology, would lift this up from just gifting socks, to gifting socks with suprise jewelry inside ;) )

If every grotmas article in some way relates to unknown (near)future releases.. one big sneaky rumor engine..

Stories -- these are ofcourse by far the easiest ones to make a teaser from, both subtly and bluntly.

Painting tutorials -- they have done this long time ago, the first of the 4 Ynnari personalities to be shown was actually the smallest one, the gyrinx was in a painting tutorial before Yvraine was revealed. They could do similar teases in painting tutorials.. it could be more direct like that one, like painting tips for bionic eyes and woosh its yarricks head being painted or more subtle like a red corsairs painting tutorial using existing minis ( though that would need more elements to link to it actually working like a tease.)

Rules -- For example, a detachment for Eldar Outcasts, with a couple of enhancements usable on an Anranthe character and a stratagem for jumppack users... for example. This one is actually more difficult thinking about it... as it could lead to complaints and annoyance, especially if it isnt clear it should be taken as a hint of things to come.

Name the many not well received, then.

Reducing clutter with models is perfectly fine. New detachments aren't clutter considering the fact they make everything fit on two pages. It's, like, the least cluttery thing about the current rules.

I don't play, only paint and watch stuff while painting, and I really enjoyed the grotmas detachments last year. Lots of neat conversations and it was funny watching people get detachments wrong.

I think there were a several duds that were mostly out of alignment with upcoming codices. Like the Eldar vehicles one felt like they weren't sure in the pipeline and went weak in case. I wanna say the BT and thousand sons ones weren't great?

Sounds about right.

(No offense intended, just a funny thing to say. Best way to appreciate GW rules in my opinion.)

The Necron Grotsmas Detachment was/is great and I've used it for every game I've played since it was released. It was hit with an errata ASAP that changed CP cost and wording for some stratagems, but that hasn't stopped me. I may not have played as much if I was to continue shoehorning my collection into the Codex Detachments.

I'd welcome more rule additions like this. The GW app does a great job keeping me up to date and organized.

I'd also welcome non-rule offerings. It's all content to me, and I'm content with that

Ha, no, it's definitely true. But I mean as a non-player, they were still interesting.

I'd like to play, but models and adulting are a trial.
