Now, don't go besmirching the good name of socks. Socks are a great gift and I liked them even when I was growing up as that's when I got new socks every year to replace the old holey ones. Hopefully we'll get some 40k rules Thursday or Friday this week, but if not no big deal as whatever they post will be free.

What about the ultimate troll, rules to upgrade ultramarines with power socks?

Well, today is another short story. This time for AoS: https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/kpctm3l6/grotmas-calendar-day-4-a-bone-chilling-tale/

No mention on what's going to appear tomorrow.

4 for 4 "Normal article with a Christmas banner".

I hope GW actually have something decent in here for us, because these first 4 days have been disappointment after disappointment.

I saw an easter egg in one of the announcement videos that said something about Leman Russ. Maybe the space wolves will get a Primarch for Christmas? Maybe a similar thing to Logan Grimnar wrt. the wolves, since so much of the SW stuff has added a sprinkle of wolf for all of us pet owners.

60mm Logan with two 40mm Thunderwolves on independent bases? Yes plz.

Next week, the quarterly balance update for Warhammer 40,000 will be landing on our doorstep, and we had six new Detachments to share along with it. But wouldn’t you know it – the Red Gobbo pinched all of them out from under our noses, and since he’s such a big fan of sharing, he’s handing them all out over the next week.

They even downright admit its articles that where supposed to come anyway, but it got re-wrapped for the grotmas calendar :facepalm:

Egocentrically.. fingers crossed for an Ynnari and/or Harlequin detachment, though less egocentrically ( as I dont play them).. the latter probably deserve it much more. ( and no, neither situation is comparable to subfaction detachments, these two arent about being the only optimal detachments, these two are the only ways to play with models you bought. The way the rules are made no one with an Harlequin army for the past decade can play that army beyond their detachments, as the max points available in others is 925 points of Harlequins. And the 3 ynnari models are locked out of anything but theirs.. however, at least the army surrounding it can be played in others.)

Maybe make it a "Dance of Death" detachment that can cover both but doesnt lock in the need of both... alot of pure harlequin players made conversions or added the 3 ynnari models to their army when the index provided that synergy.

New Detachment for the Imperial Guard.

Five more Detachments will also be coming with the Balance Dataslate next week.

Seems like an OK detatchment too.  Probably not enough to make any major changes as you're losing out on Lethals from Combined, but I like them testing out to see if Commisar+Ogryn is too strong in this detatchment and then maybe y 11th they'll just be allowed to do their thing with Ogryn.

The Strategems are all pretty solid if a bit limp.  I kinda really like the idea of the +1 S to the FRFSRF unit.  Give the lasguns something to do beyond just hoping for 6's.

Fingers crossed for Emperor's Children getting a Sonic Cult detachment.

Should've been in the Codex, but late would be better than never.

As someone who has three full units of Noise Marines, and just got my made to order Punk Rock Noise Marine to use as a 3rd Lord Kakophonist, I cannot agree more.

Looking forward seeing what comes. I like the Astra Militarum detachment alot. I dosen't help my Krieg/Vostroyan Imperial Pony Club (that list will have to cling to Recon Element to stand a chance), but the pile of Cadians I've been amassing to make a 111th themed project (or Ultramar Auxilia depending on what rule 500 Worlds might bring) would certainly benefit.

It might actually be better for the Horse Parade than on first blush; being able to farm out more orders means leaning less on the Epic Heroes and might mean better chances at fielding orders to those horses on the flanks.

Definitely an interesting detatchment.  I've got a game coming next week maybe I'll try to run it.

Always was, wasn't it? Like, genuinely does anyone actually believe that they do masses extra for Grotmas/the advent rumour engine/whatever rather than just grab some stuff they had anyway?

It's a marketing exercise, and always has been.

On topic: intent of the detachment, make grizzled veteran officers great.

Result: more power for RDTC's.

Second Tzaangor-focused Detachment it is ;)

Would be fitting in the realm of GW mockery since the damn things are still "temp out of stock" online to this day.

Pretty much but people were either expecting more detachments ala last year (despite them being a mixed bag reaction wise with a few good ones, and a lot that weren't) or more rumour engines like the previous three years (if i recall). Personally I would have preferred the latter but I can see why people wanted the former. Either way, expectations were high as assumptions were that GW had set a precedent (it could be argued they did when thay were teasing new things).

It should be noted that GW laying off staff might not have affected things as these would have been decided before now, so it'd depend on when the lay offs happened.

My worry is that GW may have bought into the A.I hype, without realising they still need human eyes on the results. (This is my fear and speculation, no evidence that is what's going on.)

"Kid who got a N64 last year mad that the large box under the tree this year turned out to be a crate full of Socks" would be more accurate.

We're getting something.

It's just not something good.

Speak for yourself, I love getting socks for Christmas.

You kinda miss out on lethals, but kinda not.

now you can get lethals on vehicles with your HWSs which is generally where you want them.

your anti-infantry tanks can get lethals against infantry.

Yes, I actually do believe that.. but there is a nuance to it that is closer to what you are saying.

Focusing on the rumor engines.. the community team probably gets a selection of .. lets say 100 images to work with in a year ( they are very unlikely to be the ones making the images. ) near the end of the year, they have used only half that.. and from that left over pool come the extra rumor engines.
Its probably not that simple as, in contrary to regular rumor engines.. the calendar ones with a few exceptions had a very short timespan to resolution.

Last years detachments where more likely to be specifically made though, they where clearly not left over detachments that werent used in the codexes.. where they specifically made for christmas ? maybe not.. it could be they where specifically made for a scourge of ghyran like thing for 40k that they didnt end up doing until christmas.

However in both cases.. while they may be already made, they are still things we would not have gotten if it wasnt for that grotmas calendar. So in that sense it is a grotmas calendar extra.

In this case however, it was something that was already supposed to happen, and is already part of the balance update, its not an "extra" thing.

While Im in the "dissapointed" camp, or rather Im understanding the dissapointed camp*, its not the lack of effort or illusion that previous times had more effort, because the daily rumor engines are possibly the lowest effort they can do, technically much lower effort than what we are getting now.

Its like the comparison people make to advent calendars : chocolates or even stickers everyday, small, low effort.. but a clear advent calendar concept. A small extra.

But right now it feels like you are a kid and :

One day you get your laundry giftwrapped and given to you, the other day you get the door of your room fixed your dad promised you to fix last summer, then the other day you get your lunch for next week school you always get on mondays spread out in giftwrap over 4 days.

Or like telling your wife/husband you got a gift for them when you come home, and then when you do.. "suprise, I came home! thats my gift to you". Yes, its much more valuable (and.. depending on the situation.. more effort ;) ) than bringing along some flowers or chocolates but its not the kind of thing you announce as a gift, or should expect to be received as such.

They are all very much more effort and more valuable than the daily chocolate.. but they are not advent calendar material... the things should definitely be appreciated as much or more, but they shouldnt be presented as an extra. Its better to then just dont do an advent calendar, wich is also not a big deal at all.

* Dissapointed is a huge overstatement, I laugh and facepalm about it, but thats the extend of it ;)

I also realise more and more that those things get much more use than that switch game from 2 years ago that is STILL in wraps
