Grotmas Calendar 2025

This Grotmas calendar is such a let down. People actually look forward to these. Mainly for reveals. And this has been dire tbh. I’m sure they’ll reveal ‘something’ at the end still.. but these daily articles aren’t even worth visiting the site for at this point.

The most interaction I've had with this year's Grotmas is rapidly scrolling to the end of the article to get the teaser for the next day.

I'm happy to see the SM2 Operation rules show up outside of a White Dwarf. I bought a WD for the Mounted gameplay rules and saw the final part of the SM2 stuff and thought to myself "oh look, something cool I'll never get to properly see".

 

Not the glorious Starshatter Detachment of yesteryear, and I'd need to find someone with the requisite Tyranid models, but still appreciated.

As expected, today's a Yriel story. Definitely foreshadowing the previous rumour, then.

Yriel refresh getting more weight with today's article, awesome. If true, I imagine they will be slotted into the Aeldari/Craftworld codex like Ynnari and Harlequins. Hopefully one day they give/return us individual codex for those eldar subfactions.

Cause I think last Xenos Xmas had that full Eldar vs. CSM boxset  with a bunch of new units no?

The Nightmare Gulf is in the Eye of Terror... if I recall it's the epicenter of the Fall (psychic blast from birth of Slaanesh).  It's been a while though so apologies if I'm off

I can't actually find anything on it after a few cursory searches, but my guesses would be: 1)The Aeldari name for the area of space in the 500 Worlds where Titus is about to go fight Nekrosor Ammentar. Probably because of the multiple Nightbringer shards; 2)The name of the boxset that the Corsairs will be in (not sure the rumors on the Corsair boxset); 3) The name of the second part of the 500 Worlds campaign.

Considering the naming and description I think it refers to the Maelstrom ( wich is a sort of gulf )

But this is also colored because Boole already rumored that prince Yriel would feature there.

The wording is new, and they have another name for Cicatrix ( and I think Eye of terror too.) but I dont think there has ever been narratives where eldar ( except those who where side characters ) featured in the maelstrom.

Is also very on the nose, and generally how the maelstrom is described.

The eye of terror would be described much more daemonic and they would have made references to their ancient eldar empire.

Have we had a particularly exciting one other than last year's? I can remember 2021 where there was the day by day rumour engine for Eldritch Omens, but not really any of the others.

 

However, from this lore article we have the name of the new Corsair psyker character (Void Dreamer) from Valrak's rumours.

Last year really got people's expectations out of whack.  This years definitely feels a bit light, even for a 'normal' year, but nothing is going to compare to last year.

Void dreamer is an older title .. and many theorised that Valraks rumor is a void dreamer, considering it previously was the corsair psyker it makes sense,. Though before this I wasnt certain.

 

Delving a bit deeper into the rumors;

 

Valraks rumor very noticably lacks a generic corsair prince, but I think the solution to this will be in one of two options ( Im 90% certain Yriel wont be a dual kit ) :

 

-- current Autarch = corsair prince, corsairs are not a seperate faction like ynnari and harlequins are, and I think the rumored release wont change that. ( I think they will all be Asuryani datasheets.) as such, a detachment could just use Autarchs for this role, allowing them to lead the corsair units. After all, in the concept art for Autarchs there was the note that they are a collective name for Nobles/Pirate princes/Fleet lords etc ;

( btw, I now see where I remember the similarity for the 500 worlds logo from, Jes goodwin sometimes framed his titles like that with a similar R.. see at the right.)

 

-- Alternatively the Corsair specific build of the new Vyper could actually be a corsair prince riding a vyper, as they could in 2nd edition. It actually makes the most sense to me as to why there is a "corsair exclusive/specific build, as just an exclusive corsair vyper would just mean 2 vypers for Asuryani.. one with the Anrathe keyword.. its a bit unnecessary as any corsair detachment isnt going to be based on allowing only anrathe units ( there are simply too few )

I also think its possible then that building a regular vyper gives you the leftover corsair prince on foot profile. A lot of kits do this, or rather, did. ( though the last one doing that was as recent as the 9th editions orcs release.)
 

I know a lot of people theorise and wishlist that the new dual build of the vyper is a 6 man transport, but apart from completely overhauling the vyper concept to accomodate that.. it feels like such a waste to me. The same codex already has the Venom and the Star weaver, just allow them to use one of those instead of adding a third same thing. Though I dont really see GW doing that.

It's no longer tournament legal for KT, which is probably why it's vanished for now. I reckon any rebox will probably come along with the rest of the new Corsair stuff.

Yeah he was rad. Also, riding a vyper like a chariot was just an option pirate characters could take in 2nd edition.

Weird. Whilst the missions look kinda interesting for more casual play, and I don't really get WD these days so this is actually new for me, the fact that one of them is literally "December 2025" feels... both phoned in, and a bit insulting to those who bought the WD this month.

 

Very, very strange. Assume the teams that worked on Grotmas in the past are stacked out with 11th and whatever else this time.

Yawn. More rehashed WD content. I get that not everyone gets White Dwarf, but it is a bit feels bad to just get the same thing you've already seen if you do.

 

Teaser tomorrow for an Armageddon short story perhaps? Tie in with potential upcoming focus there?
