Kits you love, from armies you dont

I'm sure everyone else here has been tempted (or just bought) minis from armies they they aren't tempted by otherwise. I'd love to hear what these might be, as well as what armies you do actually like.

 

For my part, I'm a fan of Necrons, Sisters of Battle, Tzeentch (Not Thousand Sons, I like renegades more), and Kroot. But, I have a few kits that always looked really cool outside of my factions.

 

-AdMech: Electro-Priests. I like cyborgs, Iron Hands are my favorite Legion, but the AdMech as a whole don't appeal to me. They are awesome minis, but I just never had a desire to collect them. But I do own a set of Electro-Priests, because they are a unique idea within the range. In a host of robes and bionics, they are just some half-naked dudes shooting lightning and siphoning energy.

 

-Astra Militarum: Ogryn/Bullgryn. The Guard is iconic, and I like a lot of the Lasgun-porn novels BL has released. But the guard just doesn't attract me outside of kitbashing for my Tzeentch traitor guard. But the Ogryn kit just calls to me. I think it's the fact that it adds that hint of fantasy to the most "normal" army in 40k. Or it might just be because they are Ogres with automatic shotguns, power mauls, and wrist mounted grenades. I don't care if it is bad in Darktide, the grenadier gauntlet sings to me.

 

-Horus Heresy: MK2/3 Marines. As a setting, I don't care for the Heresy. Is this because I am a jaded Iron Hands fan that was disappointed by the content we received through the series? Probably. But I am also a Carcarodons enjoyer, and I'm really tempted to kitbash some HH armor marks for the Carcarodons. Id probably of gotten a few for a project, but I'm really waiting on MKV,  which is iconic to Carcarodons IMO.

 

-Drukhari: Court of the Archon. I don't like Drukhari, they are probably in my bottom 3 as far as factions go. This is mostly lore related, as I found them pretty hateable in the Fabius Bile trilogy (Which is probably good writing on the part of Josh Reynolds). But I love the Court of the Archon. 40k needs more minor xenos, and this kit had so much character. I pray the Drukhari fans get a refresh of this kit. I bought the Medusae and Sslyth when they were going away, despite also hating failcast.

 

-Death Guard: Myphitic Blight-Hauler. I've come around of Nurgle, and I might collect a AoS Maggotkin army with the refresh coming out. But for a long time, Death Guard weren't my jam. I only collected a few since my son likes Nurgle. But, I will say as a jealous Tzeentch fan, Nurgle has great Daemon Engines. The MBH in patciular is such a fun, chibi Daemon Engine

I always wanted one of those giant missile laden Tau battlesuits. Bristling with giant gun barrels they like they belong in a 1980's Macross or Gundam episode.

Generally speaking, I have a global aversion for SM since the Primaris thing that invalidated most (not to say all) of my collection. Who said "Rancor"?

Yet I do really like the Phobos models. Even if I am not that ready to buy some SM models again... Except as a KT maybe??? Other primaris models taht can find a place in my heart are Inner Circle Companions from the DA. But, again, no plan to buy some any time.

 

Similarly, all Ork buggies rock, but the way the army list and the units are going (Beastsnaggas, seriously???) does not please me.

 

For HH setting, I also do really like the old fashionned outlook of the Malcador chassis and the various tank variants built from it, but I will not comit the sin to buy some neither. As for the rest of the Solar Auxillia, they are not my cup of tea.

I love the Tau suits, hate the infantry. I’ve been quite tempted to make a piranha and gun drone force but alas my digital camo painting abilities let me down.

 

I love the nid monsters too but have never settled on a scheme that I enjoy painting.

 

I love HH setting but I’m the reverse - I used to rescale and when primaris dropped it kind of ruined the proportions of my existing HH models for me

There are a lot of Ork kits I like in isolation (Kommandos, Flash Gitz, most of the vehicles) but the idea of trying to put them into a single collection makes me twitch

I don't think it's a secret that I'm a loyalist Astartea fan-boy, and that's my preferred miniature range, BUT, thanks to commissions, I've experienced many more models than I'd ever have purchased for myself.

I've painted thousands of points of Orks, Sororitas, Drukhari, Necrons, and Tyranids, all factions I'd have never bought an army of for myself.

Character models are my weakness, regardless of faction, and I will pickup one-off models rather than squad kits (my stack of Character Series models is shameful).

Some of the best models I've painted were Be'lakor and Ghazghull, and I'll never have a Chaos or Ork army.

Kroot Carnivores, Krootox, really any of the Kroot. Been a fan since they were first introduced all those years ago.

 

The minis are cool, the concept is cool, but I never can manage to paint more than a single unit before moving on to something else. Maybe in a couple more decades I will have enough in the same scheme to make an army. More likely than not, they will continue to be single mercenary squads forever.

Oh the Malcador really tempts me. Thanks to the Siege of Vraks, it'll always be peak Traitor Guard to me.

I'll double down on the Tau, I love the Kroot, Vespids, and the BIG suits with all the missile launchers. But I just really can't get into the regular faction pieces.

 

I also don't really care for the Orks outside of the cars. I would absolutely build 3000 points of Boomdakka Snazzwagons, Megatrakk Scrapjets, Battlewagons and the rest of them if my finances allowed for it.

Lhykis. I have absolutely no interest in collecting Aeldari, but that one is such a characterful model, not to mention looks like a great painting challenge. Haven't broken yet, but the temptation remains.

There's no armies I outright dislike outside of maybe the Votann, but in terms of armies I'm not likely to actually collect a full force of, the Tau as a whole stick out. I don't think I would build an army of them, but I really like a lot of their models. Notably the Devilfish chassis vehicles, love those.

Leagues of Votann is the only faction in 40K that I have zero interest in collecting, I don't like the aesthetics of the infantry/characters/floating-shavers at all; yet I do like the Hekaton Land Fortress and Sagitaur - just wish the wheels weren't so tiny. I'll probably convert the kits for my Orks instead.

I think a Looted Hekaton could look great. Could solve the wheel problem too with some kitbashing

Now that would be cool to see! And as sitnam said would be a good way to fix the wheel problem.

Decimator – best deamon engine and one of the best looking walkers. From times before they decided to lock darkmech into animal designs

Hell Talon, Hell Blade & Harbinger – insane flyer lineup. Insane. Such characteristc and excellent designs, and yet so simple in form. And they squatted them for the hellturkey. GW decisionmaking is an enigma wrapped in mystery.

The Carnifex kit is amazingly fun to build. Also extremely versatile as a conversion base; lots of big monsters started their lives as Carnifexes back in the day.

Why? Because the 40k Weirdboy looks awful in comparison.

I don't even play Orks and I know that AoS model might as well be an offical proxy with how much better it is.
