A 'renegades' codex would have been a way to keep firstborn marines in the game; surely there must have been a few in the span of 10'000 years that turned renegade without fully submitting to chaos. Might have also been a better way to represent the covert and resourceful Alpha Legion, as opposed to daemons, spikes and mutations.

I mean, you can pretty much just use the current  CSM codex if you want firstborn, thats my point. Given the 30k range, players who want to represent renegades have plenty of modelling options, and that will only increase with more HH releases (looking at you MkV armor) The CSM codex lets you use firstborn vehicles, and none of the marines have to be spiky mutants if you want.

Alpha Legion in paticular work just fine within CSM. Cultists forces are a key part of their brand, and the Alpha Legion arent exactly immune to Chaos corruption (Voldorius, Arkos the Faithless, etc)

You can't really use the current CSM codex for Firstborn. It doesn't have Land Speeders, Scouts, Razorbacks. Oh and the Whirlwind. A couple of Land Raider variants too if I remember. Oh and Apothercaries. Command Squads. Assault Terminators as well. And Terminators with Storm Bolters not Combi-bolters. And don't forget Centurions.

I think that's everything. Oh yeah, Dreadnoughts.

Also some people want to use MKVII armour. They want to represent Renegades or those only just fallen perhaps.

I know this will never happen, but some more lightly armored bikers with break-action shotguns (ala Jagi from Hokuto no Ken) would be nice. Sort of a CSM counterpart to the old Scout bikes.

I think I'd prefer the cultist bikes from the Secret Level episode, something to bulk up and some CR to proper chaos bikers.

But I'm all here for warbands and LatD as the basis for CSM (albeit, more or less on my own, I think)

I completely mind-blanked on stuff like Razorbacks and Whirlwinds, good point. I do think Helbrutes and Castaferrum Dreadnoughts are fairly interchangeable, and the difference between combi-bolters and storm bolters is irrelevant at this point.

I agree that it looks like a backpack topper for a more mutated blessed CSM. The way the spikes sweep up from what I'm assuming are the vents reminds me of the bony greater possessed.

Because of the flames and face, I can see this being some sort of a sorcerer/seer/daemonologist. I remember some of the members of Huron's posse in the Mike Brooks book about him but the details are fuzzy. Do any of his guys match that description?

...1996: The concept of the Cult Legions is introduced, and in the designer commentary it's actually the "Tzeentchian Sorcerers" who are named as the Cult (alongside "Khorne Berzerkers, Plague Marines, [and] Noise Marines"). The Thousand Sons Marines were the only Cult Troops which required a Cult Character to be present in order to take, but while they were (at this point) "spirit warriors" - souls trapped in their armour - their default loadout was actually just a Bolt Pistol and Frag Grenades. Bolters were an upgrade, and they had full access to the Assault Weapons (ie. melee weapons) list and three models able to take Special or Heavy Weapons....

While trying to find something else, I ran across Fred Reed's CSM army in White Dwarf 232 (1999).

Look! Ye Thousand Sons players, upon the mighty three-man Thousand Sons Marine Sqaud (ie. Rubric Marines) with Plasma Pistols and Power Fists! Look, and weep for the road not taken!
