Weapon Kill Markings?

On space marines in 40k and 30k they sometimes mark the barrel of their weapons with slashes or skulls of different colors to represent kills. Anyone know how they are counted and meaning behind the different colors are?

To the best of my knowledge, they merely note "notable kills", so Tank Kills, Big Bugs, hard fought kills.

As far as I know, different colours do not mean specific things.

This is clearly not a standardized practice. There wouldn't be one way to count it or how a given vehicle applies it. Its just one of myriad ways to add some flavor to your guys if you want to use it
