2025 was the year i  finally decided to try and play after not playing since 5th edition.  Its been a learning curve, and i have probably failed in that respect as i have managed 4 games as i found a local gaming club towards the end of the year.

In terms of painting and building i have really worked through my pile of shame to the point i don't have that much left to get through.  I plan on limiting what i buy now, as the plastic crack habits is resurfacing after laying dormant for nearly 15 years.  Its been slower than what i used to be able to do but my eyesight is not what it used to be and with kids and life its not always that easy to find time.

I managed to build and paint in 2025

I didn't reach my hobby goal for 2025, which was building and painting 2000 points of Death Korps. I managed to build most of it by the end of April and paint more than 1200 points battle ready in May and June, but after playing a few games of 40k in July I lost all interest in playing more 40k, so I mothballed all my 40k stuff (I only paint stuff I want to play) and now I'm waiting for the day GW will move away from IGOUGO... (which might never come)

Erm... goals,... yes,... I had goals...

I mean kind of...

I wanted to paint more and enjoy the hobby more than I had and I think I have done that. not to a great extent but I have built, even converted, a number of models more than in previous years. I've painted a few squads and played around with some new techniques. I've become more forgiving of myself in terms of actually getting out the models I've procrastinated on for years and doing something with them. To this end I have actually started building and painting  my Knights. Only and armiger so far but that is the test for the colour scheme that has always been the decision paralysis

I did fail interms of buying way more than I planned to.

this year I hope will be a leaner year for newer purchases:

Killteam stuff - maybe the boxsets but only if they have things I want in them. No hobby magpie / FOMO driven purchases

40K - new big starter set, particularly if it is 2nd edition themed!

Compat patrol magazine - possibly Guard stuff. still on the fence. maybe a couple of the Khorn bits as a painting project.

Painting/modelling goals will hopefully be the year of infantry, :

Kill team stuff I already have.
Carry on with the Nids, lots of gaunts however a lictor and hive tyrant were added to the pile this year so they will jump the queue a bit as they were presents from my kids
-side project of a small GSC force to play around with

At least a couple of squads of Ork boyz, preferably 4-6

Deathwing 2.0 - finish the test models and make a start on the army proper.

Necrons - for when I want a break with something different to my usual

I will hopefully also have in the background another Knight model or two slow burning and a bit of terrain here and there.

the issue will be motivation and the 'shiny' efffect of what I am actually drawn to at a given time but the plan is to have options so I can flit between them as I feel it for a given faction/get board of painting one thing.

I mostly achieved what I set out to do:

- Paint more units for my Ashen Sentinels Space Marines

- Build and paint all the Necrons I got subscribing to Imperium magazine

- Finish my Horus Heresy Imperial Fists army

managed the first, and mostly did the second - I got the bulk done (Call to Arms helped with that!), but as if December 31st I still had a handful of stuff to finish off. My decision to make a bunch of themed terrain - and the release of Kill Team Tomb World - meant I actually added more than I planned to initially. But it's almost done, and when everything's finished I'll probably never want to touch another Necron as long as I live!

My biggest fail was the Imperial Fists - I planned to do them after Necrons, but then the changes to army building in 3rd meant I literally could not build the army I originally had planned  Ironically, all I wanted to do was build the Praetor, Spartan, Kratos and a Contemptor I still had from the lot I bought at the release of 2nd, but found I couldn't do those without adding about 3 Centurions to the army (I presently have a Castellan).

This almost totally demotivated me from finishing the army; however, I've redone my list for third, and will build and paint the units that will complete the 3k point army this year. Not much - Templars, Breachers, a Spartan and an Araknae  Oh, and a Champion and Centurion - got to pay that Centurion tax :whistling:

I have two overarching hobby goals every year:

  1. Paint more models than I did the previous year
  2. Paint more models than I buy

For point one, I failed by a slim margin (107 models painted in 2025 vs 113 in 2024). For point two, crushing failure, having increased my total model count by 491

In terms of specifics in 2025, I really wanted to play a few Spearhead games with fully painted forces, and I did manage that with 3 new Spearheads finished (won't go into detail as obviously not board relevant). I also set myself the goal of painting the entire Space Wolves army set for the Call to Arms challenge, which I also managed (and the first time I've actually finished a Call to Arms vow in three years!)

2026's specific objectives, in no particular order, are:

  • Paint all the minis from Warhammer Quest Darkwater, and play through the campaign
  • Build the backlog of models I have sitting around from the various Hachette Partworks and add them to my collections
  • Paint the remaining units from my 40k Eldar army
  • Build and paint a 500pt Battle March army for The Old World
  • Turn my pile of Heresy sprues into a couple of actual armies (building mandatory, painting optional for now)
