In the long run, learning the brush control to do it by hand will be much easier. I recommend trying to hold the model with your thumb under the beak of the helm. this will help centre your line, and provide a more natural angle to paint the line with even pressure.

For some helmet colours, it might be worth painting the red first, then painting the two sides and leaving the red band in the middle. Then you can get away with only having to be accurate on “one side” at a time.
