Americans are wedded to the ideas of personal independence and freedom of movement.

Exactly, and there's fundamentally nothing wrong with that; wanting to be able to go where you want when you want is totally normal. There's plenty of things the US could be spending government money on instead of what they do spend it on, but I don't think a Euro-style rail system is one of them.

As for manufacturing in the US, I can actually see it being a not terrible idea. The current administration is very keen on the idea of getting manufacturing back in the country (which I think is a noble goal, speaking as someone from Merry England where the economy basically nosedived after the manufacturing businesses we had were shut down for various reasons), and it could not only create a lot of jobs given the demand for tiny plastic soldiers but also hopefully lower prices for areas further from the UK. Who knows, maybe Australians might finally be able to buy a small army without selling a kidney.

The current administration won’t survive any actual manufacturing build outs due to the length of construction time and American manufacturing doesn’t create very many jobs because it’s highly automated. If GW broke ground on a new facility tomorrow, you’re looking at six years minimum to get it up and running. Data centers have sucked up industrial

climate control and ICS orders, to the tune of 90 month waiting periods for some major systems.
