TheWarmaster
Do you think we could do a merch run? Like B&C hoodies/t-shirts/cups/dice/dice bags etc? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387424-bc-merch-2026/ Share on other sites
Brother Tyler
I would definitely like to develop some merch. We had some dice planned back in 2020, but COVID hit and I wasn't confident that (a) logistics would be fulfilled, and (b) I would be able to ensure the lowest price possible for everyone since I didn't have a solid distribution plan (i.e., a rep) covering Europe, Asia, and Africa. I have ideas about dice, but I need to see if any custom dice manufacturers can support them. There are a number of options for other types of merch and I hope to get something going. Aside from the occasional short-term merch runs (various custom dice purchase, sometimes with dice bags; patches; miniature carrying cases), our other merch efforts have been lackluster in terms of how much money they generated for the site. And given the decrease in active members, it seems likely that future efforts will be even less successful. Still, we'll see what we can do. I'm interested in hearing people's suggestions for types of B&C merchandise that they might be interested in. Keep in mind our limitations regarding the use of GW's IP. And I'm moving this to the SUGGESTION BOX forum since it isn't about the Legio, per se. grailkeeper
I would go for a T shirt or hoodie depending on the design. I don't really play 40k any more so games accessories might be of less interest to me. It might be worth doing some class of a survey. I'd guess only the most active users would be likely to answer, but they'd also be the types most likely to buys something. Brother Tyler
Okay, here are some merchandise ideas I've been pondering. dice dice bags T-shirts hoodies/sweatshirts hats/beanies patches/morale patches challenge coins/poker chips Displate art army bags playing cards The most important thing to remember is that any merchandise effort requires that someone has the time to make it happen. Equally important, I don't want anyone to get screwed out of money, so a reliable logistics plan is necessary (lack of confidence in the ability to actually deliver dice at the lowest price possible due to an incomplete logistics plan is what caused the 2020 dice run to be halted). The rise of drop shipping and third-party providers means that we might be able to develop a solid logistics plan for whatever merchandise we decide to sell. Overall, we have to balance the cost to make something happen (financial costs, time of the individuals performing the work) with the ability to fulfill orders and provide a quality product to the member. Also, we have to observe GW's IP rights. The kibosh was put on one of our early t-shirt runs because the artwork was too close to GW's art and we received nastygrams from GW Legal. I'm also concerned about our imagery being co-opted by bad actors or being confused with extremist symbolism, so we'll work to avoid that. We have a stable of B&C artwork that is (should be) safe to use, but we may look for additional artwork and permission from the creator(s) to use that art for merchandise, especially if we decide to create Displate art or have fancier clothing runs. One thing I've considered for dice is working with a company to have a permanent "Legio" set (or sets) sold, with the possibility of having special runs in different colors. I think that would require that we become an LLC, however, to arrange a contract and work on residuals, so it might not be tenable. Still, it would be nice for *anyone* (not just B&C members) to be able to buy a set of Legio dice at any time and have some amount of money come to the site without us having to organize shipping. We might even have different types of dice: standard 16mm D6 sets, a 7-die polyhedral set, and standard D10 sets. These would support use in a variety of games, not just WH40K games. I assume the regularly available dice would be black with red designs, matching our standard color scheme. Annual runs of the same design, but with different colors, might then be held for B&C members. That's my pipe dream, at least. Playing cards are another story, especially since there are a number of games that use regular playing cards as tools (e.g., Tribal, One-Hour Skirmish Wargames, Dracula's America: Shadows of the West, etc.). I imagine they would be standard playing cards with custom suit designs and fonts, and perhaps some custom face cards (though we would have to be very careful about avoiding the use of artwork that falls within GW's IP). The card backs would be recognizable as a B&C design. Whether these would be a print-on-demand thing or occasional runs (to keep costs down) would depend upon a number of factors. While some members might want tarot-sized cards, I imagine there would be a much lower demand for them. I could see tarot-sized cards as possible limited runs, however. I'm very interested in hearing about other types of B&C merchandise that members might be interested in purchasing. We could look into the possibilities and see which ideas might be brought to fruition, prioritizing the most popularly requested merchandise.
