3.5 only.

Haven't touched 40k since mid-late 8th.

Won't rehash all the gushing I do about 3rd, but quick dot points:

-lower model count

-(IMO) Better rules that call for actual decisions

-no 'moving goal post' with edition churn

-simplicity yet flavour of armies/codexs

-broad extra support through White Dwarf and Chapter Approved books

-it feels like a wargame and not a miniatures based MTG

-character load outs/ "my guys"

-nostalgia

I usually play the latest + applicable errata. That is not necessarily because I think it is the best but because it is easiest to find other players for pick up games. If you have a regular group of friends you can all agree what version you want to play but that becomes more complicated if you are playing new people on a regular basis.

The other benefit of playing the latest rules is that you also get to use the latest models. If you play older editions then you need to either proxy newer models or agree what the stats/rules/points should be. Again this is not a big deal among friends but gets harder with pickup games.

I've tried to tempt some of the older heads around me to play older editions, but I can barely get most people to acknowledge Legends as being allowed in games. At least there's still occasional space to do away with terrain footprints and prescribed layouts (I don't play tournaments).

Latest edition, latest FAQ/errata. At least the app now manages the late-edition bloat now. It really helps me out.

I'd play 5th again for sure, maybe 6th/7th as well depending on how many Heldrakes my opponent wants to use.

Gaming group and I 2nd edition only, we are thinking of trying 3rd or 4th soon to allow someone to play with a proper Necron army list.

Oldhammer is so popular now, there are FB groups with thousands of members for most of the earlier editions, as well as events that take place globally.
