I think the base are the same size, just when you take a picture very close it accentuate the perspective a lot (and I don't see boyz on 40mm base honestly). So with the same logic the new boy is not that taller than the old one as shown in the picture. I tried to resize the base to make them fit to have a more correct size comparison. The new one is also on rocks and rubbles directly sculpted on the base which are elevating him a little. The Lost Son
I've got to say from the original rumors I was a bit on the fence with this box, I skipped leviathan for the same reasons being mainly that the marine half wasn't selling it to me (and I predominantly collect marines but why buy a big box for one squad or a character) and do I have space time etc for another army. But the Ork refresh looks great and there's a real land speeder which I've pretty much wanted to upscale (and never gotten around to since 8th and it's following disappearance)so now I'm more excited for it. Mmmmm Napalm
1 hour ago, Marshal Reinhard said: Nice catch on the wider ears. Not sure thats meant as an in universe difference. Ie both left and center are intended as wholesale mk.vii helmetd Yeah when comparing the previous generations of space marine kits and stuff that released post-2017, there are a number of elements on modern kits which leave me wondering whether the sculpters would incorporate them into those older designs, if they were to re-create, say, a model wholly clad in Mk. VII or the like. One of the improvements that I find noticeable about Primaris models is the increased detail and attention paid to things like the ribbing of the undersuit (on modern kits you often automatically know the position an arm is supposed to go in according to the ribbing and shoulder position), the mutliple layers of plating added to the top and back of the feet, and the shoulders beneath the pauldrons; all of these have crossed over the primaris boundary and are a feature of new Horus Heresy marine kits. When I look at the feet of a 2013 tac marine, i find myself struck by how it looks more like a shoe than modern models, which hide the point around where the ankle joint would be visible (with the exception of phobos and its clown shoes, which only looks good in SM2 imo). I feel that a revisited Mk. VII would probably feature some of these changes, as they more so fall under improvements in design generally. Those small connection points make clipping and cleaning a breeze and not the chore GW insists on incorporating in to their standard models. Xenos heroes though I don't see. The amount of wasted space on that sprue means boxing and shipping would be prohibitively expensive. It would however sit well packaged as a magazine freebie/promo, possibly with white dwarf. Evil Eye
The new Ork looks like a nice sculpt, and from what I can tell I'm glad to see that they're actually about the same overall mass and size as the old ones, just a bit more upright. Even with scale creep being what it is, the current boyz dating back to 3E (we don't talk about the other kit) were still pretty large- especially when you remember they're in a hunched over gorilla pose rather than standing straight up, which is fitting for brutal fungus ape men. They're still huge next to your average 28mm human scaled model, especially in terms of raw chonk. They're not as big as a Space Marine but they were never supposed to be? So honestly I'm really happy to see they haven't ballooned in size, and should look alright next to the last-gen Boyz. That said I'm now going to have to panic-buy all the current Boyz I can get my filthy hands on. One of my (many, many, many) projects is an Ork force, and that kit has stood the test of time and is invaluable for kitbashing, which checks out given it was literally designed to be the core of 90% of Ork units when it came out, blessed be Andy Chambers. Those plastic Orks were easily my most purchased kit back in the day. Still have many dozens of them fully assembled and unpainted (young me was not as diligent about army painting ). I too have the idea floating around to finally get them painted up and add some more ladz to make a proppa Orky army. Given my project speed, that means some time in 2036. What is even better, I recently gained the ability to "grow" them from "fungal spores" so I will never run out of the ability to have more ape-Orks. Truly, we live in an age of wonder. The competitive crowd makes up 4% of the community, yet the entire game is built around pleasing them. I don't know about those exact numbers but even if they are accurate, I don't see the problem. Using tournament data to improve game balance benefits both tournament and casual players. There is literally nothing that is detrimental to casual play. And if you feel matched play is not for you then you can change it however you like between friends. I have to disagree there - the competetive focus in how the rules are written and developed guides how people play, even if it is subtle. The structure of missions, how datasheet abilities actually function all feed off that underlying competetive focus. Sure, tuning over or under performing units is fine, but even then a big enough points swing will start to influence list building either through play experience or sheer "how much stuff can I bring". DemonGSides
New edition, another return to the routine argument of "Well in pick-up games they only play tournament style only" which is somehow simultaneously not true, a cop out, and self defeating. Gonna be a fun year ahead of us going through this same song and dance around the idea that playing one of these games requires effort, and yes, sometimes you're going to have to organize your own game at the local game store instead of just hoping to get the benefits of matchmaking without the attendant competitive spirit. You listed a lot of sub-rulesets there, but they're not reslly something you'd consider with a random pick up game. I'd argue a casual attitude narrative focus matched play game is likely the "norm".
