hi, me and my 9 year old son are complete beginners. Just practising our painting and getting to grips with the basics of the game right now.
I got into this ( after enjoying it as a child) as something we could do together without any screen time.

Thought I'd find somewhere for hints, tips advice etc. Greetings all!

I do have a question, if anyone could help?

i'm looking at buying the core book and 2 codex books of the armies we decide to start building, once we've practised for a bit.
so my question is, how long do we think it'll be before a new edition? am I best waiting for 11th edition before buying the books we want? or will i get my money's worth for now?
we're currently just using a copy of the small core rules book, a few datasheets and online pdfs l, but as I say, im trying my best to keep this a screen free thing.
thanks

Welcome to the Hobby, and the B&C

I'd expect that GW won't be redoing all the codexes for 11th, and they'll all have FAQs and Errata rather than brand new books. Which is all to say, I think you'll be safe to grab whichever you want. If you're interested in the Datacard packs, maybe hold off on those to see if they are updated though.

Thanks for that mate, dont think I'll be bothering with the datacards if I'm buying the books anyway.

Now to decide which direction to go in!

Buying codices late in an edition can leave a bad feeling … so well done for having your eyes open. Have a quick look at eBay prices for 9th edition codices and 9th edition rules maybe, you’ll get an idea if that’s a cheap way to play until 11th (or the drop in value you might see). Rumour is 11th this summer, it’s just a rumour, but it would fit their “once every 3 years” pattern.

anyway, welcome. Playing and painting with my sons was a way back into the hobby for me too. My main advice is try not to take over! Let them do things their way, be guided by them.

Also the paid Warhammer App is nice if you have the codes for the army and they are updated when the rules are negating need for Data cards.

Welcome!

I came into the hobby with a son of a similar age at the end of 9th edition so appreciate your dilemma.

I bought a couple of codices which then became effectively redundant when 10th was released the following summer and the new codices (Astartes and Orks) were released soon after. I wasn't aware of the three year cycle otherwise I would have held off.

My son was then bought a basic 9th edition  pack (not by me) and we've played the initial starter games to get him used to data sheets, moving units and measuring.

By the time we start layering the more complex rules on top (and I have painted enough minis!) 11th will have been released!

Enjoy your venture into 40k, I hope we get to see your minis and maybe your games in the aforementioned club, a blog or one of the sub-forums such as Works in Progress!
