Id recommend a process something like this. Start with a darker redder magenta and sponge on a circle. Then take a lighter purple like emperors children and use a technique called two brush blending to draw out the spikey pattern. Two brush blending is basically where you put a little paint in one spot then use a second dry brush to pull it down and blend it. Its kind of a mid point between layering and drybrushing.
