Give Eye of the Primarch to the Captain, and attach him to 10 HINTS?  Aggressors are sort of your Odd Man Out there.  The only thing that isn't BATTLELINE, and can't get some form of it (even as limited as led by a BATTLELINE CHARACTER)  But Eye of the Primarch on HINTS is pretty mean, and now everything Auspex Scans every time they attack, which is what I assume you're looking for.   Or try and shoehorn Calgar in instead of the Gravis Captain to give the Aggressors his Super Doctrine Bespoke.

A Marneus Calgar version

1x Marneus Calgar + 2x Victrix Honour Guard (200pts)

Apothecary Biologis (80pts): Eye of the Primarch, Absolver Bolt Pistol, Close combat weapon

Librarian (80pts): Blades of Valour, Bolt pistol, Force Weapon, Smite

10x Assault Intercessor Squad (150pts)

5x Assault Intercessor Squad (75pts)

5x Assault Intercessor Squad (75pts)

5x Heavy Intercessor Squad (100pts)

5x Intercessor Squad (80pts)

5x Intercessor Squad (80pts)

3x Bladeguard Veteran Squad (80pts)

Just tried it myself and came up wtih:

Captain in Gravis Armor (with Master Crafted Heavy Bolt Rifle and Master Crafted Power Weapon) and Eye of the Primarch (joins the HINTS)

Librarian with Blades of Valor (attaches to the Assault Intercessors

Marneus Calgar in Armor of Antilochus

Assault Intercessors x10  (with the Libby they have a 4++ and +1A everywhere.

10 HINTS 2 Heavy Bolters, with the Captain you have 8 Heavy Bolt Rifles, and 2 Heavy Bolters all with Precision.

Tactical Squad - Gets you a Lascannon or Grav and a melta/grav gun, can split into 2 squads.  Both will be battleline for Auspex, strats, etc.

6 Bolt Storm Aggressors

Anti-armor is probably the weakness, but in 1K its going to be less common, and you can Punch one tank if you need to with Super Doctrine Calgar.  You're also big blobs instead of MSU, but every big blob has a force multiplier leader, you're death on their characters, AND you have mobility coming out of your ears (everything but Aggressors get Tactical All the Time as BATTLELINE and the Aggressors have Calgar who is always Tactical All The Time - which sounds pretty good playing on a full size board wtih a half size army.   Edit to Add:  Calgar is also the Warlord which means 1CP per battle round.

Second Edit:  Its also possible to load up on 5 Terminators instead of 6 Aggressors which gets you 2/4 Botler shots (After Advancing and Shooting), and a Cyclone Missile Launcher and you still have 5 Power fists to add to Calgar's.

Edited by Tacitus

OK did some more playing around:

10 Tactical Terminators with 2 Cyclone Missile Launchers

Gave up the Aggressors and the Tac Squad but now you've got 11 Terminators (With Calgar) and 11 Gravis (with the Captain) and a roving ginsu in the Assault Intercessors.   33 SM+ Bodies is very good, 3 units less so.  But two Cyclones felt worth it.

I don’t have a bunch of those, but I like those lists!

The Gravis Captain with the HInts is a nice touch. I completely spaced on that option because I so rarely go with ranged options on my characters. I think I can work that into a list.

I really like that last one I made.  Not so much that the unit total is small, but 11 power fists, 2 Cyclones, from the terminators, 11 4+++ Assault Intercessors puts them on par or better than the BGV.  And the Gravis Captain is just so sneaky in 10 HINTS with Precision.

I’ve been playing around and it is crazy how 140 point Tactics Squad fills out lists to 1k while other units or unit combinations are either under or over by 20-30 points.

Its the Tactical + Enhancement I think.  140 +20-30 point enhance = 170ish point Intercessor-ish

Thank you all for the advice!

It turn's out I didn't have a Shooty Gravis Captain in my pile of potential; it was a Shooty Tacticus Captain. So I did the reasonable thing and started a conversion....

A lot of my options are in off-site storage (like all my Tactical Squads, Devastators, Terminators, vehicles, etc.) and at this rate, I'll take the core of the list from what I have built and painted. Realistically, I think I can get Marneus Count-as, Shooty Gravis Captain, and the Assault Intercessors (to get the squad from 5 to 10) done.

  • 3x Marneus Calgar (200pts)
  • Captain in Gravis Armour (90pts): Eye of the Primarch, Master-crafted Heavy Bolt Rifle and Master-crafted Power Weapon, Master-crafted Heavy Bolt Rifle, Master-crafted Power Weapon
  • Librarian (80pts): Blades of Valour, Bolt pistol, Force Weapon, Smite
  • 10x Assault Intercessor Squad (150pts)
  • 5x Heavy Intercessor Squad (100pts)
  • 5x Intercessor Squad (80pts)
  • 5x Intercessor Squad (80pts)
  • 5x Intercessor Squad (80pts)

That's 860 points. Realistic options for filling it out:

  • 3-6 Eradicators
  • 3-6 Aggressors
  • 5 Hellblasters
  • Lieutenant
  • Librarian
  • Apothecary
  • Apothecary Biologis
  • Chaplain
  • Brutalis Dreadnought
  • Redemptor Dreadnought
  • 3 Bladeguard
  • 5 Sternguard

I think it's a question of using remaining points to either lean into melee or shooting. If I lean into melee, I could swap out Calgar for Suboden Khan (+3 obligatory Outriders) and be at 845 points.

I think that's a misnomer and trap thinking.  Calgar isn't "prefer shooting" he's about doing both. So is Suboden Khan.  Looking at the two leaders and what they can lead, I'd even go so far as to say Calgar is slightly weighted to fight, and Suboden is slightly weighted towards shooting if not both equally split.  I think preconceptions are getting in your way when it comes to Aggressors/Tactical Terminators and Bike Squads.

What I ended up going with

Won first two games and lost the third, came in third on scores.

Games 1 and 2 were similar. EC monster mash with Fulgrim, Shalaxi, Wingd Demon Prince, and 5 Tormentors; then Crusher stampede Tyranids with all big monster either 9 or 14 wounds and a single Zoanthrope+Malanthripe unit. Both games were good and close, it was a question of playing  the objectives with more units, their larger damage weapons be inefficient against what I offered in trade, and prioritizing correctly with OoM. Eye of the Primarch had no effect in either game.

Game 3 was against Custodes and I got rocked. 4x4 Custodian Guard, Land Raider, some Seekers and Draco’s. It wasn’t a blow out, but 91-42 is not a good look. Custodian Guard trade with amazing efficiency into Intercessor bodies. The double activations were nasty. I lost a round of Oath when the target reactive moved into a Land Raider and that did a number on my damage output. Long story short, I was wounding in similar rolls as against monster mashes, but the Custodes had more units/bodies, more return activations, and more efficient attacks against my lads.

Had fun, would use again, maybe drop Eye of the Primarch and the Sternguard for more Aggressors (or Assault Terminators if I had them). I Alamo now understand the Calgar hype. He lived up to it.

I'd keep Calgar with Tactical Terminators.  There's practically no difference between a Power fist and a Thunder Hammer so I'd rather have 44-64okys Advance, Shoot, and Charge shots.

Plus the 30 Power Fist/Thunder Hammer Equivalent or Better(Chain Fist) attacks.
