We have a bias towards things that we liked during our formative teen years and early 20s. It's a well documented psychological phenomenon. My local scene is a melting pot of new and old hobbyists, I'm actually one of the older ones, much to my chagrin. I'm telling you - the newer collectors who joined in the last 5 or so years do not see old models like this in any kind of favourable light. We've actually had many discussions on the topic. They find the whole "Firstborn defence league" to be comical at best, but more often is just irksome and tedious, and older kits like this have little appeal to them. Some do show an interest in collecting olderr stuff as well just because they like having a historical collection that accounts for more time periods. Anecdotes. The alleged behavior of a small group of people you game with and have totally had loads of discussions with ≠ a representative example of the hobby community at large. If you go to Warboots and look on Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, Oldhammer Facebook groups, Vinted etc, you will see a large demand for classic models, from age spreads across the community. GW wouldn't bother doing Made to Order runs if there was no demand. They are still fantastic models even with technology moving on. They'd be no GW in existence if your absurd claims were true Evil Eye, 01RTB01 and Lord Blacksteel 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387519-made-to-order-space-marines/page/2/#findComment-6154747 Share on other sites
Marshal Reinhard
Some models are more fantastic than the rest, for sure. I'd say that the claim that one's favored side represents the larger majority, while the opposing viewpoint is anecdotal at best, is one that cuts both ways without actual data to back it up. His claims originate from a small group of people we have no way of investigating, they are unverifiable. Mine originate from open sources with large userbases you can quite easily go to and have a look at for yourself. The demand is there. I'm not claiming anything to do with majorities, or that newer models are worse as a general rule. Older models are still nice. Additionally, coming into a thread about a Made to Order release and saying in long format 'older models are trash' isn't really constructive and comes across as antagonism for the purposes of derailing the discussion. I should re-phrase my original statement somewhat, my main point was that modern sculps have come a long way. I too am affected by Rosy Retrospection, and by the same token I have a fondness for old 3D games despite how basic they look by modern standards (and I'm not just talking about old games that have aged well due to having great art, such as MGS, Resi2, etc). I simply think it's important to recognise this. I also think that these models will be popular with older collectors, or completionists that want to own everything. You're exactly right, some of these models 100% compete with the modern production qualities - I am literally sitting next to one of these Terminator Librarians (the third picture, right hand side) which is pre-Primaris and is pretty much the same scale and detail. Brother Christopher
It's interesting to see how GW's prices compare to online prices for these rare models. I'm definitely glad to have all the squat marine models I wanted and not being 'forced' to buy them any more. Still, it's great to see some of these available again - definitely a treat for collectors, if the price is reasonable. Firedrake Cordova
=][= The topic of conversation is the opportunity to get the classic Made to Order models. Valkia the Bloody
Yay, I can finally get "Armour through the Ages" for a hopefully reasonable price, missed out previously. lhg033
Tempted by the terminator librarians though I am pretty sure the one on the right is the limited edition Varus model (which I think had dodgy detail at the back of the feet for some reason - i might be confusing it with something else) so it is really only the other one I want for completeness. The classic captains are nostalgic but I can take or leave as a bundle. I would pick up individually the DA one but as a set the value drops for me. I have multiples of the classic / metal terminator captain, chaplain and librarian plus the redone version of the captain that was in a start collecting so happy to dodge those ones. I've mulled armour through the ages each time I've seen it but I'm really not overly fussed in the end Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387519-made-to-order-space-marines/page/2/#findComment-6154888 Share on other sites

It's a nice little set, I picked it up the last time round. The biggest challenge is deciding which legion to paint them up as! I'd like the Space Wolf Captain but not keen on the others (I already have the Blood Angel).
