I'm 80/20 in favour. Its a hugely impressive model, but it's such a departure from the first, and the first was a truly unique model when it came out, up until the end really, soulgrinder aside. There was nothing else like the original defiler, and I would have preferred a glow up more akin to the original kitbashed brass scorpion. Less flesh, more metal, like it's been deliberately constructed and fused with the essence of a daemon, rather than a shell encasing a fleshy form, if that makes sense.

But it's ace, and I'm going to get one and paint it purple.

I was worried that this was going to be a disappointment...

So glad to be wrong!

This looks fantastic (and how long before Valrak appears with his .gif). If I had a chaos army, he'd go right in it.

I wonder if they made it more fleshy so it can serve as a base for a soul grinder redo.

I... I don't like it.

It really barely resembles the classic Defiler design at all. The old one was definitely showing its age and 100% needed a replacement, don't get me wrong. But I would have preferred a proper refresh of the same basic design with refined detail, rather than this whole-cloth reinvention.

Ironically this has the opposite problem of the Mutilators; it feels too much like a mass of flesh and bone amalgamated with bits of machinery rather than a mechanical beast with a daemon bound within its shell. Too much daemon, not enough engine.

It isn't a terrible model, but I don't think I like it as the de facto new Defiler.

It brings the daemon in the machine.

Nice but so disruptive vs. the previous kit that I have difficulties to treat the information. We are shifting from a multilegs bulky über shoebox dreadnought to a possessed daemon engine in all its glory. I've got the idea but I can't help finding the new version a little bit otT... Too perverted for my taste, I would have preferred something a tad more mechanical. But it is still a nice miniature anyway.

Yet, now that we see this it makes that the Mutilators look not that good in the end...

This is a home run for me, I think it looks awesome and I love that there are so many options. These look legitimately awesome. It looks like it will be able to fill so many roles.  I want like 3.

Huge amount of clear poseability, and looking carefully at the armor plates, looks like it should have a decent amount of extra bits for kitbashing other daemon engines left over. As a kit is is fantastic, and I really just need to know the scale of it more properly. That said, it is such a big departure from the previous defiler kit it feels a bit different to me. I'm hoping it is bigger than it comes across as, because then I think it will sell the defiler more, as the more slender components give it less visual weight if the overall legspan is the same.

Combined with  the fiends and Wardogs, I think these 3 kits could serve as great basis for kitbashing unique Daemon Engines

I think someone’s going to create some extra armour panels for this chap so they can cover up the fleshy bits… I was surprised how much “daemon” was visible, given that the previous model is basically all armour plating. I don’t hate it, but I think if someone 3d-printed some armour to go over the lower torso at least, they’d do quite well.

or maybe it’s just nostalgia for the blocky old one talking. Either way, it’s a great model!

Excited to see size comparisons. The design looks amazing, but it feels like there is a bit on shinkflation in terms of the amount of space it takes up on the table?

I'm hoping it's the alternative, that it is even taller and bigger than the old one to the point it is just *huge*

I was starting to think I was the only one, but this is pretty much my feeling on it too.

It's a cool looking kit in general, I love the head options, and I can appreciate how the kit seems to share more stylistic traits with the Venomcrawler, Maulerfiend and Forgefiend. Might be some smooth kitbashing potential there.

But as an actual new Defiler, this one's not doing it for me. I think the big aspects turning me away are:

  1. The much greater emphasis on the fleshy side. Some of that can be fine, but for me, this is too much of that for a daemon engine.
  2. In general, it seems to weigh more heavily on the body/thorax rather than the limbs. Not saying that's 'wrong' as a design choice, but I always liked how the legs stood out on the old one. Here, it has more of a chunky feel to the middle parts, which in turn makes the legs feel a bit stubby by comparison, at least for me.

Yes, absolutely! That's why it actually looks good.
