A new novel following the destined ascension of a devout Word Bearers heretic comes to Black Library in Zardu Layak: The Crimson Apostle by Rich McCormick, author of Renegades: Lord of Excess.

Quote

When a Space Marine receives visions of their Primarch in their dreams, who can doubt that they are destined for greatness? Zardu Layak is one such warrior, granted the knowledge that he will be instrumental in a grand ritual that will change the galaxy forever. But one problem bars his road to glory – he is not ready for the mantle he will wear.

Quote

First, he must travel to a forgotten world and retrieve a weapon that will give him the strength he requires – the malign Anakatis Blades. But ghosts plague the surface of Helwain, and the spectres of Zardu’s past weakness cloak him in doubt. Do they reveal the truth? Or is the truth itself simply another lie?

This new novel will be released in all of the regular editions you know and love, including digital eBook and audiobook versions on the new Black Library app. We’ll have more news of a release date here at Warhammer Community soon.

Every book should have a new model release accompanying it. It's strange how they'll make a custom figure as a free model of the month, where it's just the 11th member of a ten-man squad, but books that are a massive investment of GW's resources and the readers' time *maybe* have a decade-old resin model that can only be purchased online.

These are the characters readers have the most investment in, but it's a total luck of the draw if there will be a way to translate them in game.

I like to imagine the phone call from the editor went something like:

"Rick! ...oh right, Rich, sorry; Good news! We'd like you to write a novel for the Horus Heresy! ... Yes, well no, not about one of the legions, more of a single Character novel. Who would you like? ... No, no you can't have him sorry... Or him.... no that's not going to work for us... The Scouring you see, we might want to use one of those again, one of the main authors, you understand... No, they're still alive too... ehhh, well he is dead, you're right, you're right - but he does have quite an established history, not sure we want to introduce anything to flesh out such a character that might have some significance, you understand... yes, best to stick to someone who's already dead but not really important either, I agree... let's see, who do you think? ... No, not him... nope... great choice! but no... let me help you, let me help you, I'm sure we can find someone; let's have a look in our ol' character roledex here - we're very organised! ... hmm... no "A"s... no "B"s...let's keep going!... one moment...  ...   ...  ... here we go! How would you like to write about Zardu? Yes! Yes... no, me neither... Well, that's agreed then, wonderful; we're all *super* excited for it... what's that? ah, no, no it won't get a special edition; not part of the Horus Heresy Character Series, you see.... yes, I was surprised too! ... Well you would think so, I agree, but I'm sure there are reasons... ours is not to question! They've not failed us so far, eh? ... Smashing, I'm sure it'll be a huge hit... yes, well everyone does loves a Word Bearer...!"

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Layak feels a bit like a character they invented

Spoiler

because they failed to realise how popular Argel Tal would end up being, but he's just a bit less interesting in the main HH/SoT series - his betrayal of Lorgar is interesting but then he just dies early in the Siege so...

I don't know. Might encourage me to finally paint the lad I guess. He at least has fun rules in HH 3.0, unlike most of the named characters. Pour one out for Sigismund for sure...

  • 2 weeks later...

Very very excited for this; I'd have bet money that I was the only person wishing for a Zardu Leyak solo novel.

He's a very cool foil for Erebus within the Word Bearers so I'm curious to see them interact. I think of Leyak as being on the "Altruistic Chaos" side of the equation (to the extent that that makes sense) where in their minds they're on a divine mission to harmonize a fractured reality. We don't get much of him but it seems like he's with Argel Tal in that deep vein of tragedy running through the Word Bearers.

The home Heresy/imperialis campaign I've been tooling away at for the last year is centered on Leyak bringing a delegation from Mars to break the news of the Heresy to a wing of Legio Gryphonicus, only to find that they've converted to Ordo Sinister and have zero time for Chaos or Mars, leading to mass casualties in orbit and a big Skitarii vs. Colchisian Auxilia wrassle while Leyak tries to claim their Psy-Titans.
