I haven't read a black library book since the end and the death Volume 2. Prior to that id read them all up until the buried dagger, i then listened to them all on audiobook bay and got as far as volume 2.

Id really like to get back into things as i love 40k but I've lost track of the current books. I'm considering listening to he at least the siege of terra audiobooks but had thought id go up back to some of the later Horus heresy novels. Not all the way back but maybe from 40+

Looking for advice on what people think are the better novels, I'm also wondering about the dawn of fire series, is that worth reading?

Are there any stand out novels in the last 5 years? or any must reads. I love anything imperium wise but also like the lore of the Tau and Aeldari.

Any suggestions or recommendation's would be welcome Thanks.

Dawn of Fire either fizzled out or was never good in the first place, depending on who you ask. Avenging Son is, at least, a decent snapshot at the state of the Imperium in the current setting.

Here are some highlights from what I've read since 2020:

  • Ashes of the Imperium is a great start to the post-Heresy era.
  • Twice-Dead King duology - The best Necron book(s) yet published.
  • Dropsite Massacre - A good fill-in-the-gaps book for Heresy fans
  • Interceptor City - Fantastic sequel to Double Eagle
  • Elemental Council - The best-ever Tau novel
  • Outgunned and Above and Beyond - Excellent aeronautica novels, with Above and Beyond especially being absolutely fantastic.
  • All things Warhammer Crime - A consistently great range of books that was taken too soon.
  • Ghazghkull Thraka: Prophet of the Waaagh! - Probably the best-ever Ork novel
  • Sea of Souls - A dawn of Fire novel, but it can be read on its own. Great Navy story.
  • Assassinorum: Kingmaker - Imperial Knights, politics, and assassins, oh my!

There's plenty more, but those are top of mind. I haven't read Voidscarred yet, but those who enjoy Brooks' writing seem to find it's a very good eldar novel.

Seconding Elemental Council, it's superb. Also haven't read Voidscarred but the accolades for it have been impressive. Black Library Book of the Year runner-up behind Dropsite Massacre on the official site, and the two switched spots for the Goonhammer Book Awards 40K Book of the Year as well.

Thanks i really appreciate the replies. Some of my favourite novels have been Dan Abnetts dog fighting ones. one of the rare books i have read was interceptor city but i hadnt considered outgunned and above and beyond.

Thanks for the recommendations definitely gonna look at some of these, i do like Navy stories and im open for other perspectives in the universe.

Oh, a Navy reader! In that case, run- don't walk- to get Valkyrie Squadron by Robbie MacNiven, too. (I reviewed it here).
