nice enough, I don’t think it does a better job of making the model stand out, except the tabard, and black isn’t the colour of the really see for tabards on BA (usually beige like ultramarines or dark grey)

I normally do my tabards in purple which I think suits the "regal" look of Blood Angels.

These guys look great. Did you sculpt all the BA bling by hand with green-stuff or are there 3D printed elements in there? I really am curious how you achieved these models. Great stuff anyway, kudos.

Funny enough its all 3d printed.

The briliant Requiem82 on instagram (link) converted up my ideal crosspolination of primaris and old-school marines assault marines. I would have liked to get something more along these lines:

I've never been a big fan of the chest straps, but otherwise this is basically what all of my death company look like. If you want to achieve this look it's laughably easy if you have access to any bits.  Plenty of 3rd party jump packs if that's the big hold up.

It's not that it's impossible, I pretty much kitbash all my models; it's what I would've liked GW's offerings to be out of the box and what I would've liked the design aesthetics for marines to be going forward.

The new ones feel like a bit of a step back compared to the latest marine offerings.

While I agree that the model is relatively plain for a veteran marine, I think that the contents of the box would be even more targeted to a newer audience than previous boxed sets (due to recent transmedia successes like Space Marine 2), and thus they would be designed to be quick to paint and put together. I still like it though. Here's hoping we will see more involved designs when (if) the dedicated box set is released at a later date.

I don't really see how it's a step backwards. I get that it could be more inundated with fancy honors; I think the full release will contain those bits and bobs.

Starter boxes are always pretty conservative with their offerings. It's fine; a step backwards would insinuate that it's design is bad. Unless you're one of those "All Primaris is bad" at best this is just an uninspired model. That's not BAD, it's just boring.

Boring isn't ideal for what is supposed to be a flagship product, but it is also safe and easily expanded upon for the people who want to. That seems pretty ideal for most of Hobbyists.

As someone who sometimes falls into the trap of going "in the good old days..." I will say that it's definitely better than the 2nd edition starter kit that the cover art pays tribute to.

I just stumbled upon a couple of those plastic marines when going through my terrain stuff (I've been waiting for a chance to turn them into statues for the last 25 years or so...) and they were extremely simple and, yes, boring. So were the 5th and 6th/7th edition starter marines (with the exception of characters); I really think we are a bit spoiled sometimes, these days.

It's a step backwards (in my opinion) towards the early primaris designs compared to the more recent models that incorporated more classic design elements. There are elements in the model which, for me, are worse than what we had previously, like the overly rounded jump pack with extra boosters, the silly ankle boosters and the extra chest armour which looks out of place to me.

Recent marine kits showed a move towards the more classic design choices, which I enjoyed more, hence my hope they would continue moving further towards that direction. It seems they aren't doing that in the models they've previewed.

I'm just stating an opinion.

Perhaps GW shouldn't be listening to the community and instead of going back to update all the classic units, they should be releasing all new designs as they did in 8th and 9th editions.

Say what you want, but when the Eradicators and the Bladeguard were revealed there was genuine excitement for the units and the models as well.

There was genuine excitement for updated Terminators, Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, and Wolf Priests as well.

Centurions were an "all new design" when they were released, and they are one of the most controversial new units to this day. (Edit - Suppressors were an all new design too... )

It is really not about being "new," or "classic," or "bold," or "safe" or any other buzzword. It is about the quality of whatever is released and whether people like the designs or not.

I don’t think it was at all reasonable to expect that they would not use the updated primaris jump troop design with these. And that design IMO is superior. It looks like they could actually steer their flight, and does not have superfluous straps that imply that the jump pack is not bolted on the armour.

And people who like the old packs have had years to get them and glue them on whatever bodies they prefer.

Ultimately people here constantly complain that the new thing is different than the old thing. Of course it is; if it wasn’t there wouldn’t be a reason to make it in the first place!

If we don't get lightning claws and shields in the multi part kit I will be immensely disappointed...

I have been scouring the trailer looking for hints but I am not getting my hopes up too high. If they have the option for both a 4++ and a Master crafted sword (as seen yesterday) and also come in squads of 5 with jump packs, there is the risk that they become straight-up better than Bladeguard Vets. Nothing is guaranteed but I am bracing myself to wave goodbye to Storm Shields and retire this squad to legends.

I mean they dropped the ankle boosters from the sanguinary guards which was a big improvement, and that's a more recent jump pack kit than the jump intercessors.

There's plenty of new things that are based on older stuff and which are widely liked throughout the community. The terminators and scouts are faithful but improved and upscaled versions of the old designs.

Also I don't think I'm complaining anywhere? Just saying what I think about the new kits? I find it weird that if someone isn't over the moon with a thing, it needs to be labelled as complaining.

I don’t think shields will show up at all.

We know the unit is launching with master-crafted power swords. It is possible there will be a second loadout option and a special weapon option or two (like Sternguard MPK). One pair of lightning claws could be a special weapon. Or the second loadout option will be treated like Black Templar Sword Brethren weapons.

With quick glance, these really look like loyalist Thousand sons

They sure do ;-)

Back on topic, I'm painting some BA assault intercessors just now and as others have pointed out I could probably make a better one with the BA upgrade sprue. I opted for HH helmets and jump packs on my earlier van vets using the primaris bodies, I'll post a pic when I find one.

I forgot I also gave the BA Primaris LT Dantes jujmp pack:

Fairly sure this is a photo edit rather than anything official.

i agree though, the white placement makes me think thousand sons

I believe you're right about that particular photo.

They did put out some official photos of the other First Founding chapters (along with the Black Templars). While the BA Bladeguard did still have the white in the shield, the off-white tabard was replaced with black much like the new Vanguard Veteran. I think the JoyToy model replicated this same scheme.

I can't include the one photo example I found, since it's on Facebook, but here's the link:

Blood on the Book

I love that the model has an Aquila on his chest instead of the Crux Imperialis (the name given the winged skull). I’ve nothing against the Crux Imperialis, I just like variety, one of the things I miss about Firstborn being the variety of ornamentation present on models. So far I think Aquila has only been present on a couple of Lieutenant models. So that’s a pro. A definite con is the way the loincloth is blowing. It makes him look like he’s wearing a diaper. Overall, I’m fairly pleased, however, he does seem a little understated for a veteran in that he’s not got a lot of bling going on, and the diaper/loincloth is little off putting, but the latter may end up looking better from different angles. Also, I imagine the cloth will vary and won’t be exactly the same across the whole squad.

If you don’t mind me asking, did you buy the parts already printed or did you print them yourself? Are the STLs available to purchase form an online store somewhere? I really, really like the way the models appear and wouldn’t mind doing something similar myself.
