I've put this off too long, figured I would share a bit of completed works and upcoming stuff in an effort to give myself a bit more motivation and have a bit of fun. Life has increasingly been difficult to find time and motivation these last few years to hobby but dang it...gonna stubbornly do what I can.

Bit of background: Started 40k in late 2nd ed. Been a Thousand sons fan/player/collector most prominently at the start of 3rd. Couldn't afford or even get a hold of some of the old pewter Rubric marines(I had some), so my first gen Thousand sons are a lovely hodgepodge of converted chaos marines scattered with the old pewter ones. One of these days I will have to find them. I played heavily from 4th through 7th. And built a substantial Thousand sons force, but M&P wise I did not put my best effort into the paint part of it. Battled Cancer through 8th and 9th, and slowly turned from less of a gamer to more of a hobbyist since. I largely worked on Necrons in the last few years but recently I have been returning to my first love. The awesome and ever amazing 15th legion! I want to re-start the army basically. Start fresh. So here goes in my attempt to keep motivated and adding to the Thousand sons.

I'll start off with an Sorcerer I completed a couple months ago:

He’s lovely, also that’s the weirdest helmet I’ve seen in 40k for a while, that must forever be getting caught on things. Probably why he turned to chaos

I debated heavily on this helmet, on one hand I did think its kinda silly. But I was really trying to lean into the bird theme on this guy. The exalted kit is an option dream, and I stuck with all the bird bits....except for the staff...simply because I messed up the bird staff by accidentally getting too much glue on it and had to find a replacement.

Wanted to share my glow up converted Defiler pre-new defiler. I started dabbling in Fusion 360 and made some 3d printed conversion bits to really make it belong to the T.sons.

That being said, once the new Defiler dropped I couldn't help myself.

I have been very slowly converting the new kit. I will be happy to drop him here once completed. And I do mean converted. I love how GW made unique cult heads to make a Thousand Sons defiler stand out from a Death Guard one but that's where it ends. Just the head. I took it a step further and pretty much re-made all of the chaos-y trim to look less chaos-undivided and more Tzeentchy and added on a bunch of bits. I also worked hard on a very thematic base with using 2-part epoxy resin to make water effects(which I am new to and trying to learn). The model itself is 98% complete and the base is about 70% done. Unfortunately its going to be awhile. The painting is going to take a lot of time. I tend to drag my feet with paint. Who knows, maybe I'll step it up. Can't wait for the guy below to get a brother!

Love your defiler - the painting and sculpt is so crisp it looks like a 1980s action toy (in the best kind of way).  The only thing I would do differently would be to give the head guns more like excruciators and less like bolters - for that, I think they just need longer barrels and that distinctive excruciator muzzle break.

Totally agree, I built it before the new kit when they used to have combi bolters as options. In a pinch I would say its counts as, but I would replace it with a new design to look more like excruciators. After I finish my new defiler ill make a return to this one. Or...ill be lazy and leave it as an oldschool display piece. My tzeentchy side is fickle.

I'm having to do the exact same thing with my "prior rules" defiler - I'm also going to be mocking up the other weapon options as well.  That will have to wait until after Call to Arms, though.

Bit of a tease for my new defiler. A sample of what im talking about regarding completely reworking the trim(and then some).

Once I figure out how to use a pressure pot to remove bubbles in epoxy resin, then I can actually move to painting.

Taking a break from the defiler to slow rolling some rubrics, pretty happy with the banding but dang I have to hold my breath.

Im thinking im happy with my style but im lacking on the gold. The gold is basic, I want to work on shading to the point that it has more depth but im not sure I want to do NMM. Ive not dabbled with that stuff at all. As of now its just gold with one shade and some brighter gold highlights and bright silver edges. But thats looking kinda plain? I dunno.

If you won't bother with NMM why don't go for TMM? I mean you have base gold, light gold and highlight silver, you missing shadow. If you have bronze or "old gold" put it into shadows, like under palm. It should add depth.

Or if you have Inka or contrasts you can put a bit of purple one in shadow. Thin coat should work too

Right now im using rhe classic retributer gold base, reikland fleahade wash, brighten areas with liberator gold, and edges with stormhost silver. In this combo, what would you use for old gold to shadow? More layers of wash (fleshade) in shadow areas? Or a layer of a darker gold(recommendations on which?).
