As an Ultramarines fan since the end of 3rd, I love this model. Great to have some more flavour; we’ve been spoilt recently.

Also as an Ultramarines fan since the end of 3rd…why? This feels like someone went too hard designing the champion for the Victrix and they decided to make it into another character rather than shelve it. The lore justification seems ham-fisted (yes, yes, I know, when isn’t it). I don’t think Calgar and Cassius are the same age so couldn’t have been neophytes together.

As a reveal for this campaign this just seems pretty poor. It should be something for all Chapters, not the spoilt poster children. I also think there’s more worthy contenders, like Cassius.

So cool model, I will definitely pick him up, but there should be better choices to show for a reveal campaign like this, and the Ultramarines have enough named characters to work from if they want to redo them.

So... If Cassius is THE oldest living ultramarine not in dreadnougth, and Marneus is supposed to be "similiar" age.. Lore sense it makes no sense.

Marneus age is inbetween(debated) 400-500 and Cassius close to 400(now surely older) And then they pop this weirdo in like nothing?

My current thinking on the rationale behind this is that he was supposed to have been revealed when we got that last drop of ultras (would have made sense really). My theory on why he didn't drop then was either someone thought that many characters at once was overkill or because there was a delay somewhere so cato took his place but I'd wager that he was a figure looking for a release slot.

I think that irks me too... As Cassius was a Chaplain when Calgar was a scout iirc

I mean at the same time, I feel like some people are missing the forest from the trees here.

When the SM codex comes out, we know they are getting (at a minimum)

-New Interecessors

-Land Speeder

-Gravis people (forgot their names)

-Vanguard Veterans

-the generic SM heroes from the Armageddon box (captain, chaplain, librarian, assuming they launch individually)

-New (kind of) Outriders

-at least 2 more SM reveals that we haven't seen yet

People are acting like the Ultramarines character is the only new (I'm saying new, as in individual multipart boxes for the range that weren't available before) kit that they're getting, and that Calgar beat them up and took their lunch money. It's far from the case, and from what Valrak has said, there's a Venerable Dreadnought, Successor Chapter characters, Captain on a Bike and more coming eventually.

The Dark Angels are still getting their stuff with their codex. The Blood Angels (for better or worse given how the last release went) are still getting their stuff with their codex. Same with the Wolves, Templars, etc. GW has said from the beginning that these reveals are for the release of the generic SM codex, not Armageddon specific, not anything else.

that all being said, I agree with the discussion about new one-off characters. Would've preferred if this was just called "Victrix Champion" or "Ultramarines Chapter Champion" or something. The whole thing about his age (and I'm getting tired of the whole "here's this new thing it's always been there") is a bit silly.

Warp travel make personal age and chronological age very different things.

I´m going by the lore tidbits, wikis and what i personally know. No amount of "look cool new model" Saves this from the fact that his lore is taking a dump to Calgar and Cassius basically

How is it taking a dump on their lore?

Model itself is actually pretty great as an addition to ultramarines.

as a blood angel fan I continue to feel I’d have preferred a champion and chapter banner for my sanguinary guard, seeing as the victrix guard got a chapter banner and champion

I mean, warcom gets a ton of stuff wrong. Could be the lore is: this guy and Calgar fought together as neophytes and had contact with Cassius as a chaplain during that time. And warcom bastardised that into: everyone's a neophyte!

While glancing through wiki's to try and see how old Cassius and Calgar were, lol, noticed this:

From Lexicanum, citing 5th Edition Space Marine Codex:
"Cassius is also the only warrior of the Ultramarines permitted to call Marneus Calgar "young Calgar"

From the 8th edition Space Wolves codex:
"Despite the fact that Logan is one of the longest serving  Ulrik calls him 'young Grimnar'.

maybe one of them can stand be retconned lol.

Don't be influenced by loud voices online.

The Ultramarines have 8 unique kits in total (with this guy). The Space Wolves have 20, Black Templars have 10, Dark Angels have 13 etc etc.

I think all chapters should have as many riches as the Wolves and Dark Angels.

Eventually they will run out of mediocre Ultramarines and give us the greatest video game hero (and Ultramarine) of all time: Malum Caedo:wink:

(His name literally means, "I kill evil.")

makes 8 ultramarines (10 if you include the black library guys but lets not) and 8 blood angels, 10 templars, 13 dark angel kits and wolves have 20 (very clear outlier there)

There isn't really any scope for more Ultramarine kits beyond single characters.  They don't have any distinct units or vehicles like BA/DA/Templars because they are codex adherent.  Victrix Guard is just their version of an Honour Guard for the high command, which all chapters have in some format.  They've only got so many characters because of famous posterboy chapter status.

If anyone should be getting more kits, its Blood Angels for their missing Death Company set!!!

I miss Tyrannic War Veterans.

But on topic - really nice mini (is that a Legatine power axe?), shame about the lore mangling, and we had other characters who are more worthy of a mini. Personally, I'd like to see one of Mikkael Fabian, since he's been around for YONKS and never gotten an official miniature.

Even Decimus Felix (which I just now realise is almost certainly a Gladiator reference  ("My name is Maximus *Decimus* Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the *Felix* Legions...") and can't believe I hadn't clocked it 'til now) would have made more sense. I like the notion of the Tetrarchs and would like to see them in miniature form! :)
A new Cassius, Telion, or Chronus would be welcome, of course, but I've always lived in hope of seeing Fennias Maxim (Master of the Forge) and Corpus Helix (Chief Apothecary) realised in some sort of mini, even if they are just made for legends. ;)
