Folks,

I couldn’t find an obvious thread to discuss apps.

So here goes.

From my pov: The GW app is a Gold standard, it’s graphics are good, representing GW’s artwork and style, list building is easy and as accurate as any can be and the addition of Combat Patrol, the Command bunker and War Journal all add to the complete 40k app.  However, it comes at a High price.  To unlock a faction (Combat Patrol excepted) you must buy a codex.  You must also pay a subscription to Warhammer+ which has just gone up from £5.99 to £6.99 /month. This sum, whilst giving access to White Dwarf and media produced by GW is getting on for TV subscription figures.

So far you cannot print cards from GW’s app which I personally believe is most valuable, however, you can copy the format onto your own cards.  The GW format has a nice turn/phase by turn/phase list of stratagems as an easy check list for newcomers like me.

Alternatives are out there and I don’t know them all so please add below with your “review”.

So far I have looked at New recruit and War Organ.

New Recruit: Is a fairly austere looking app but functions well.  Navigation is a bit clunky but you get used to it.  Army building is simple and free.  You can add Enhancements which are calculated toward the army value.  To go further than army building you must pay a support fee. It currently stands at £29 (which equates to £2.42/month).  This paywall gives you access to stratagems and various other functions like game tracking and attaching photos of your figures to the unit data.

Of particular note for me is the variety of printing options which include a GW style card format as well as several others.
I haven’t yet paid.  I don’t object to supporting developers as long as the product is what I want.  The developer seems to be constantly updating the app and Discord is available.

Having the option to print your cards rules is nice.

War Organ: I have only recently tried this.  The tile based interface is nice to use and it even has confirmation sounds on pressing.  All the data seems up to date (as possible). It gives stratagems for free and its printing function is as good as New Recruits but without the GW card format.  However it does give the option to force a unit card to a new sheet.

Army building is straightforward, navigation is similar to NRec.
My only misgiving so far is that, although Enhancements are listed in the Detachment list, I haven’t found a way to afix them to a unit when army building.  The cost of that Enhancement also doesn’t appear. (Enhancements can be attached and scored…see below).

You need to open unit details, if it could have enchantments it would be listet

You’re right.  Add the unit to your army and add the enhancement when you enter the unit details.  I had been using Blood Angels as a test but it seems they don’t have many enhancements.  Tyranids do.  Thanks.

To add something here: New Recruit also allows you to export your army list in order to setup an army/game on virtual tabletop on Steam. I've used it quite a few times and it was (at least in 10th e.) quite handy and exceptionally accurate.

I'm not aware if there are any other apps out there, that allows you to do that but again, I'm not the most tech savvy person there is, especially when it comes to phones and apps.
