Lathe Biosas
It depends on what you like. There are people who like all the big stuff, while there are crazy people who enjoy painting a near endless stream of gaunts. I have noticed a lot of models in common at the shop being used: Norn Emissary, Norn Assimilator, The Swarmlord, Broodlord with 10x Genestealers. I don't play Tyranids, but noticed a pattern between players. I'd research more before buying. Focslain
As @Lathe Biosasstated, it depends on the style of army your going for. The Vanderghast Swarm (current CP) is a good start. If you can find a store with the Assault Brood CP that is another good one to add in. If you want to go Big Monster, that is fine too, but they don't bundle those until the winter. Some Christmas boxes have had a decent set of big'ums. Norns and Tyrannofexes are power house units, which is why they tend to be in a lot of lists (mine included). Did you have a theme in mind for your force? Khulu
I agree that the theme matters a lot. Tyranids have a huge roster and a lot of the detachments are very specific in what they help, so if you a Crusher Stampede kind of army it'll look very different from a Vanguard army. Is there a specific disposition or theme you'd like to shoot for? Tawnis
The Vanderghast swarm is a good start, though it does lean pretty heavily into the little gribblies, so there will be a fair bit of painting there. For just starting out, and/or in support of the Vanderghast swarm, I'd reccomend the Tyrranofex/Tervigon kit. It has one of, if not THE best dollar to point ratio for Tyranid units, and despite being a kit that's a little on the older side, it still looks great IMHO. The Tervigon can support your Termagaunts from the CP kit, and/or the Tyrranofex can add some big guns to the list that you're missing in that kit, so it's goon in multiples too. That would be the cheapest and fastest way to just get the bugs on the table and start playing. As the others have said, it does really depend on what you want to do with them overall though. The army has one of the largest ranges out there and can be crafted in so many different ways. Do you want something that plays similar to world eaters where you just wanna be strong and hit stuff, or are you thinking of trying out a different playstyle?
