Adeptekon Posted yesterday at 12:52 AM Share Posted yesterday at 12:52 AM Are there any water-worlds of note with aquatic navies in the setting? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/388399-water-world-navies/ Share on other sites
Tawnis Posted yesterday at 02:45 PM Share Posted yesterday at 02:45 PM The Laer (the race whose sword corrupted Fulgrim) from 30k were a species that lived on an ocean world. I don't recall if there was a lot of description of their world or their appearance, it's been some time since I read that book. The Praetorian of Inwit Posted yesterday at 03:17 PM Share Posted yesterday at 03:17 PM It would be cool to see the Imperiums version of a Battleship or a T'au submarine or anything Orks. An Ork aircraft carrier would be cool. Even if GW can't/won't explore it in the tabletop (which is understandable) it would be nice to see it explored in videogames or Black Library. Lathe Biosas Posted yesterday at 03:34 PM Share Posted yesterday at 03:34 PM We've seen navies featured in a bunch of the books, codexes, and comics: In the Horus Heresy, The Titan Legions go full Pacific Rim and fight under the water. During the 3rd War for Armageddon the Orks utilized giant submarines to conduct amphibious operations against Imperial forces. They had a whole Sword/Juno Beach style battle. In the Traitor's Hand by Sandy Mitchell had Commissar Cain attached to a naval vessel... Flesh and Iron by Henry Zhou we have two Imperial Guard regiments specializing in naval warfare, one big battleship group and another that was a riverine style navy. Griefbringer Posted yesterday at 07:24 PM Share Posted yesterday at 07:24 PM Anybody familiar with Piscina IV setting? Back in the 1990's, Andy Chambers was running a campaign with friends (one of whom was Pete Haines, before he joined the studio), and documenting the highlights in various articles in WD (often published under the title "Chambers of the Horned Rat", since he was also known for his fondness for Skaven). The main concepts of the campaign were later turned into Storm of Vengeance, though the main protagonists in the Imperial side were changed to Dark Angels. Piscina IV is essentially a water world, with one major island. There is no significant military wet-navy, as they would have nobody to fight, but there are civilian/industrial ships plying the waters. One day a bunch of orks, lead by Warboss Nazdreg, shows up in system and starts to harass the major island. Unfortunately they do not start building their own wet navy, but instead start landing orky reinforcement straight to the island from space by using original "tellyporta" technology. It has been a while since I read the articles in question, so I would need to check them again for details. However, the morale of the story is that if a world has only one significant (and not very large) land mass, there is not much point in building major military navy, as there is not much place for them to go. However, a world that has a lot of islands of various sizes, or small continents separated by bodies of water, would have a need for much water traffic, and for military vessels to keep the shipping lanes safe (and independently minded locals in line).
