Griefbringer
Greetings to the venerable members of the Bolter and Chainsword forum! I have been reading some interesting discussions on Bolter and Chainsword during the last weeks, and now decided to register myself in order to take part. While I am decently knowledgeable about some of the past editions of WH40K, I have not really been interested in the latest versions of the game. However, I have recently developed an interest in the 30K setting (around Horus Heresy) and the games set in that era, and noticed that the topic gets decent coverage on this forum. So at least initially you might see me contributing most to discussions related to those topics. Any proper answer that I would give to such a question would be a lie, so I prefer not to provide one. Instead, to stay on more factual side, I would like to point out that the short story Warped Stars by Ian Watson (first published in Deathwing anthology in 1990) features a space marine chapter named Grief Bringers. Their power armour colour scheme was described as "principally a sickly pea-green, with engrailed chevrons of headachy purple". For some reason not much has been heard about this chapter since then, and to my knowledge their peculiar colour scheme has largely failed to catch the imagination of painters around the world. On another note, those familiar with Elric of Melnobone no doubt are familiar not only with the sword Stormbringer, but also its sibling Mournblade. Lathe Biosas
Can we never mention the Elric series? One of those confidence shattering events of my youth revolves around those books. Gather 'round kids, it's story time. There was once a really cute girl I had a major crush on that went to the same school as I did, who worked at the used bookstore where I used to get all my Warhammer books and other nerdy stuff. One day, I was in the fantasy section scanning the shelves when she ninja'd up behind me asked, "Can I help you find something?" In which I replied, "I'm looking for Moorcock." I immediately realized that that sounded terrible and when I turned around she was gone. I was mortified. But it got worse. When I went up to the front to pay she returned with a book and said to me and the guy at the register "I didn't think you were into these types of books." She had a gay romance novel in her hands. Yeah. So, no Michael Moorcock mentions, please. Griefbringer
Lathe Biosas, thanks for the story! I shall be careful about mentioning that author or his works in future. That said, as a non-native English speaker, it took me quite a while to figure out that there is a double entendre present in his surname. Perhaps much confusion could have been avoided had his ancestors decided to name themselves instead as family Heath-Rooster. This somehow reminds me that during my secondary school years, I used to regularly borrow books by Philip K. Dick from the local libraries. Again, as a non-native speaker, I was quite unaware that there was a double entendre again hidden somewhere. I guess asking for his books in a second hand bookstore in an English speaking country might cause some confusion. That said, some of his plots were also surprising for a young mind. Maybe I should try reading them again one day and see :cuss: kind of reaction they would cause on me nowadays. Speaking of languages, back in 1944 J.R.R. Tolkien had this to say about my native language: "Poor old Finns, and their queer language, they look like being scuppered.... Finnish nearly ruined my Hon. Mods..." WBRBloom
I see 'Deathwatch novel', I upvote. One of the first WH40K books I got my hands in, and I remember it fondly. @Griefbringer welcome on board!!! @Lathe Biosas, LOL!!!
