Side note - Slann are a mashup of "Slaad" from D&D and "Slan" from, well, Slan. So the misspelling is kind of going in the right direction at least. Looking at the other items in the Epic Eldar range of the time, there are no obvious misspellings. As for the reasoning behind, it may not have been particularly trademark driven, considering that at the time the Epic Eldar version was just a single small item on a big sprue of many other items. WH40K version, which was actually sold separately, only got relesed ca. 1997 despite having been present in the 2nd edition rules for a couple of years before that. Going even further back, there is the word "daemon" which has been around since the Realms of Chaos books (1988), though the slightly earlier Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd edition (1987) rulebook still uses the word "demon". I am wondering if this was an attempt at more arcane flavour, or just something due to concerned parents of the 1980's ("Our books have absolutely no mention of demons!"). Then there are also GW products that do not contain misspellings, but are often misspelled by the gamers, such as Sentinel which is very often typed online as Sentinal (for reasons unclear to me). Never mind actual original words invented by GW writers - Slaanesh and Slann somehow get twisted into Slannesh and Slaan every now and then. You have a good point. I was thinking about the 1997 Vyper release (I still have a T-shirt of the Vyper for around that time) but I'd forgotten about the datafax that pre-dated the model kit. It reminded me of a kitbash I saw of a Vyper that I believe was pale blue and cream coloured? As you said in your first post it was more likely to be a creative choice rather than one advised by a legal team, making a distinction. I also agree about the fan typos, people have a long history on this board of joking about The Emporor sending out his Rouge Traders. 2 hours ago, Mogger351 said: You mean the fælcun and fyreprysm? Since the datafax came out with Dark Millennium box and/or Codex Eldar, and there was the Epic model to draw inspiration from, there were probably a fair number of kitbashed Vypers around in the mid-90's - the basic plastic jetbike had been available for several years before the Vyper came out. Some of those kitbashed Vypers may have even done well in Golden Demon competitions. As for GW naming, there are also some pun-tastic misspellings, like certain primarchs being named after a dessert (lemon charlotte russe) or poet (Lionel Jonson). I hate those knees. You know what bothers me about them the most is that if they'd been an occasional element included on some models but not all of them they'd be a lot less egregious. One of the nice things about classic Marine kits is the subtle variety between parts even with the same armour mark (Mk. 7 helmets for instance have quite a bit of variety with the pipes surrounding the vox-grille). If there were various different designs of knees, some with the flanges, some without and some with different additions altogether it'd be fine. As is it's another example of the annoying copypaste nature of Primaris Marines where there's very little variety between the actual designs of the models, such that a squad feels like the same model in a few different poses. Similar story with the backpacks, gorgets and helmets. Hopefully the new kit will fix that somewhat, though IF I buy a box they'll be getting knee surgery. And gorgetectomies. And classic bolters, backpacks and helmets. I am not a fan of the leg shape on the new ones, but what gets me is that the upper half of the models are stacked with detail (as they should be imo), but then the legs are almost completely plain. It just throws them off for me, makes them feel unbalanced. As for the Grey Knights, I am nervous for them. If they do them as well as Crowe was done (again, imo) then I'm here for it. But I am worried about them turning out like the Sanguinary Guard did (if you like it, more power to you, I'm just not a fan) MoriyaSchism, Lathe Biosas, No Foes Remain and 1 other 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/388419-codex-space-marines-multi-part-intercessor-vanguard-vet-teaser-legends-culling/page/18/#findComment-6184796 Share on other sites
NothingHere
With every passing day, i dislike Primaris more and more. i started the hobby in 8th, and i found to like a lot of things like Aggressors and Inceptors, the new design stuff didn't bother me. Now? The knee design kind of annoys me, i do agree that it shouldn't have been on every model, i really dislike their power packs, the jumppacks aren't the worst but i still dislike the winglets, they feel too small, the gorget is fine? Another case where i do agree it should have stuck to being a variation. It was already a thing with Errant armor. I am just at the point where i would rather see an Old World 40k (no Horus Heresy isn't old world 40k, Heresy is 10,000 years in the past, rules wise it kind of used to be? It is a different time period more than a universe after a reset) In keeping with Heresy with updated classics. It won't help the constant disonnance that stuff like the new Landspeeder causes with it being just a different design, even if i love how faithful it is to the original without just being the original 100%. It would feel better not to see what i think, is a much better and more interesting design philosphy be shunted for the sake of greed or whatever the point of Primaris was. Lathe Biosas
Alright. I'm not one for arguing, but I think that GW was attempting to ape the style of the 臑当 or suneate. These were above the knee armor bits that were associated with the Samurai of the Edo period. I think it wouldve worked better if they were only on a few units and were a little less pronounced. But I could be wrong. I've been wrong before, just ask my Mom, ex-girlfriend #1, ex-girlfriend #2, ex-girlfriend #3, ex-girlfriend # 4.... Antarius
I definitely agree with the gripe that they should include more armour variety within the squads, both mixing and matching different marks, but also variety within the same armour marks. It's an easy way of providing some visual variety and it makes the universe feel more "real" (not necessarily realistic, mind you), like the differences between Mk VII helmets that Evil Eye mentioned. Apart from different parts reinforcing the "relic" aspect of power armour, I also think field repairs is a perfect fit for the 40K mood. I actually don't mind the knee flanges (though I have trimmed some of them down and find it pretty easy to do), but I really don't like the ankle bulbs and I am always a little mystified that people mention the knees all the time, but not those. I mean, I can live with them, if only because I'm too lazy to figure out what to do about them, but I find them much more visually jarring than the flanged knees. At the end of the day though, helmets are going to be the big thing for me. If they don't start putting more older helmet marks in the kits that's what's eventually going to stop me from buying Space Marines (that or prices - or Death, I suppose). I think the new helmets look okay from a purely visual standpoint, but they're just not Space Marine helms to me (I do like them for Deathwatch for some reason; I guess I think of those as being issued with slightly more "tacticool" sci-fi gear). As for the tanks, my guess would be that Chaos Marines keep them, but I obviously don't know. It seems like it would make sense from both a lore-, "difference between factions"- and business point of view (the latter one obviously being the deciding factor at the end of the day). I can't remember who made the point about tracked vehicles for IG and hover vehicles for SM, but I think that made a lot of sense (as an explanation, it's not something I'm a fan of). I think it does seem like they want to make factions as thematically and visually distinct from each other as possible (I don't think that's necessarily a good or bad idea, but it does seem to be a thing GW thinks a lot about when designing factions).
