As we heard, many venerable Space Marine units will be leaving the codex.

This doesn't mean that you need to stop using them in your games. Many of these units can continue to serve in your army using the rules for comparable units as “Legendary Proxies”, while other units will continue to be supported with Legends rules.

As with Legends rules, Legendary Proxies can be used at home, in stores, clubs, and campaigns, but if attending a competitive Warhammer event, these units should only be used with the permission of the event organiser.

The following units are leaving the codex and becoming Legendary Proxies.

Tactical Squad – counts as an Intercessor Squad

Devastator Squad – counts as a Desolation Squad

Suppressor Squad  – counts as an Inceptor Squad

Pedro Kantor – counts as a Captain

Uriel Ventris  – counts as a Captain

These units are leaving the codex, but will get Warhammer Legends rules:

Centurion Assault Squad

Centurion Devastator Squad

Razorback

Predator Destructor

Predator Annihilator

Vindicator

Whirlwind

Stormhawk Interceptor

Stormtalon Gunship

Stormraven Gunship

Hammerfall Bunker

Rules for Space Marine Legends units will also be added to the Warhammer 40,000 App alongside the codex, so it’s easier than ever to add them to your armies. This will be the pattern with Legends units in all armies as new codexes are released.

Well, this isn't unexpected. But it still feels rubbish.

I'm curious what the reasoning behind the split between legendary proxies and legends was. If my melta Devastators are count-as Desolators, why can't my Predator be a Gladiator?

Given the strong rumours the rhino is coming back with a new model soon, is reasonable to assume the rhino variants will also return in due course.  So they are probably keeping the distinction there.

I'm going to assume that a Power Armoured Marine on a 32mm base is basically the same as any other Power Armoured Marine on a 32mm base, whereas the profile physical dimensions of a Predator and Gladiator are very different, so the "proxy" doesn't work as well.

Edited for clarity.

RIP the Vindicator. May all your gaming groups be accepting of Legends.

Now, I'm not sure where to put this so I'll put it here: if a Tactical squad can represent an Intercessor squad, are Intercessors getting special weapon options soon?

I just realized, that since any and all devestators are desolation squads now... you could technically swap all guns on the desolation squad with the guns from a devastator kit now, and you'd not even have to explain the proxy.

A predator with a big gun up top and heavy Bolter sponsons is radically different to a gladiator with big gun up top and Bolter sponsons. It'd never work.

Yup, I meant "profile" as in "silhouette" but that was poor phrasing on my part.

One has no base, the other has a base.

That's probably the divider.

Also, let's see if this Legends change does or does not screw over the 4 Chaos factions that rely on these vehicles.

(Keeping in mind that EC, who already lack them, are wildly regarded as being the weakest Cult faction by far as a result).

No more Centurions? What will Ravenguard players bounce on and off the table now?

I'm honestly confused about the Legenderizing of the Space Marine Aircraft. The new Ork Codex has a Detachment for Aircraft. It seems strange to me to promote one factions planes, while removing another's.

The only possible answer is that the Astartes are getting new fliers.

Plastic Thunderhawk confirmed?! :woot:

(I can hope...)

I knew in my heart(s) that this day would come eventually… but God Emperor, all of them at once?! :’(

also: Legends-ing Kantor is abominable.

I understand why Kantor got the boot. You haven't been able to buy him for a very long time.

What's going to happen with the Grey Knights if the Stormtalon, Stormhawk, Stormraven and Razorback are getting this treatment? Is their army list going to beat Emperor's Children at being laughably tiny? Not counting the HQ options and command squad. It will have Paladins, Terminators, Interceptors, Strike Squad, Purgation Squad, Rhino and Land Raider.

Curious about chaos. Unless GW has updated models waiting in the wings(not holding my breath), I would be (a little) surprised if GW removed the rhino, predator, vindicator. This takes large chunks out of the already small army lists. Maybe in time, but perhaps these units are safe for now in the chaos legions. I see multiple people asking in the facebook post and GW has given there boiler plate "There are not plans right now..". "We have not heard anything right now"..

Don't we have rumors of new upcoming grey knight?

Yes. The rumor mill says they will be getting new models in 9th 10th 11th edition.

It might be a move to make the armies more different. Chaos keeps the old tech while the Loyalist get the new stuff.

Also the Rhino is missing from the Legends list which is interesting.

I guess that's it for old Codex compliant Space Marines. Perhaps they can find new life as Red Corsairs in the new edition if Chaos gets to keep all their Rhino chassis toys. I can't believe I'm saying it, but I guess a "Death to the false Emperor (GW)" is in order.

Interesting how they've gotten rid of Suppressors as well - while I welcome it (they look far too over-designed and visually unbalanced to me) I'me surprised GW would walk back on a unit so (relatively) quickly.
