CommanderJonny1
I wasn't sure exactly where to put this, so apologies if it belongs somewhere else in particular. As a big history nerd, the various heraldry, iconography, etc. used in the WH40k universe was part of what got me into the hobby, as I love the parallels between them and ancient or medieval heraldry, flags, and more. Long story short, I recently got my hands on a copy of Insignium Astartes (in what I hope to be a good start on a collection of such books), and when I was going through it, I saw some Chapter heraldry listed under 'Badge Variants' on page 36. I managed to parse out the different Chapters shown on the page (as they're numbered, but not named/cited), until I got to the second-to-last one (#XXIX). It seems vaguely familiar, but I don't recall any Chapter matching it. I know that some chapters have changed their iconography (especially if they date from the earlier editions), but nothing came to me. Searching around online, the closest iconography I could find to it belongs to the Hammers of Dorn, although it's not the exact same, and the color scheme is completely different (besides the fact that it predates the HoD by about a decade). Does anyone know anything about this Chapter? Whether it has a name, or if it has even shown up in any other publication? MoriyaSchism
I can't find anything about it. It seems like it's the odd one out, all the other icons are of existing chapters. Might just be an example of what's appropriate as a chapter icon or an alternate icon for an existing chapter that doesn't have the word hammer in their name. Indy Techwisp
Couldn't find any matches on either wiki and found one other post on reddit from years ago also expressing confusion about this Mallet. Should you claim it no chapter should rise in protest. It may be a fossil of an unknown successor. Lathe Biosas
Odd... I couldn't find anything either. I can ask one of the chat bots to hallucinate an answer if you want. Be sure you are requesting assistance from the Anointed Intellect of an uncorrupted machine spirit, not the kind of which we mustn't name here. Indy Techwisp
OK so if it's not claimed I'm gonna say this was the insignia for the Gavels of Calgar, an Ultramarines Successor chapter that were purged by the Inquisition for suspected Renegade behaviour after they launched several strikes on allied Chapter fortresses on the orders of centuries old communications from the Heresy ordering strikes on Alpha Legion forces in those locations. There is a gauntlet on the field instead of a glave though. The icon on the pauldron is a Gauntlet weilding a particularly undersized looking hammer. A Gavel is a particularly small hammer. This is why "Gavels of Calgar". Glaives have nothing to do with it. Brother Tyler Posted yesterday at 12:13 AM Share Posted yesterday at 12:13 AM I don't recall any official Chapters whose Chapter badge has been portrayed or described as being similar to the one in question. At this point, I suspect that it was either (a) something they came up with to show a little variety, and/or (b) a clever way to have some Chapter that might someday be called the "Warhammers" or something like that. There is the Hammers of Retribution Chapter, but their Chapter badge is unknown. For now, I would just chalk this up as GW showing without prescribing. Felix Antipodes Posted yesterday at 02:06 AM Share Posted yesterday at 02:06 AM While there is no illustration of the Hammers of Retribution chapter badge, it is described as two ornate crossed thunder hammers. If I was looking for a suitably obscure Chapter to use there is the Hammers of Dhrex (only mentioned once in a short story in WD 466) who are one of the numerous “Name Only” Chapters in the lore. The lack of anything concrete seems to point to former, although the latter point is amusing, and I wouldn't be completely surprised if something like that was the case. 3 hours ago, Felix Antipodes said: While there is no illustration of the Hammers of Retribution chapter badge, it is described as two ornate crossed thunder hammers. That's an interesting idea, and would be a nice way to tie the Hammers of Dhrex back into older stuff. I doubt there's any such intention though, given the time difference, but I wouldn't mind if such a thing happened. Felix Antipodes
In the WD story the Chapter were gifted with the Primaris creation method by a Torchbearer fleet, so they are from a pre-rift Founding. How far back they go is up to the brave soul who wants to adopt them as their own.
