I'm excited to see how Logan + termies do. I've been playing since 3rd edition, and I think this will be the best set of rules that they've had. I expect to see a lot of marine lists with a terminator brick. That said while I think all 3 variants of termies we can take have a place, I don't think WGT are the answer to another terminator brick.

For my first few games I'm going to be trying different units/detachments to see if I can find a good answer. First up is going to the ironclad champions w/ 2redemptors, 1 Brutalis, and Bjorn. The 3 non character dreads will all have the -1 D enhancement. I also plan on trying out 10 blood claws with Ragnar to see if it feels bad or not, 20 grey hunters, and six headtakers. For my other 2 dp I want try tacticus attack force, and assault brethren for some speed boosts.

One thing I noticed while putting the list together is that HT can mix loadouts now. So, you take 3 w/shields, and 3 w/ paired weapons to get up to 30 attacks. I don't think it changes my opinion on them much, but between the character gaining the quarry bonus, and wolf movement tricks they may be closer to bladeguard than I thought (for the record I still think all of the terminator units are better than either BG or HT).

Fresh off another scrimmage...I think I'm 5-0 in testing the new SWs so far

Faced off against Drukhari...I split my GHs into squads of 5 for the first time ever

5 man GHs shredded the Drukhari MSU...advance out of transport...shoot 1 blob...charge another

It was awesome...I think 10 GHs picked off 4 separate units charging out of 1 rhino.  Extreme efficiency!!

But the hero today was freaking Logan once again.  Arriving from deepstrike the squad splits shots

The CML models pick off mandrakes marked with the beacon secondary that he thought were safe in the backfield (nope...I got LOS with 2 models who just happen to carry 8 frag missiles each)

The other SBs pick off a unit of wyches I could barely see

I make my charge into another squad and wipe them + a transport because I get 2 random CFs into it

On his turn he full sends into my terminators and I expect to die.  His first 10 man brick of wyches kills about 7 terminators

Bad news for him is I have 2 CP and interrupt with Logan.  Logan singlehandedly kills off the entire incubi squad led by Drazar (10 sweep + cleave + dogs + sustained hits meant a ton of dead single wound drukhari).  The surviving terminators finished off Drazar with their CFs.

Next turn I fall back...shoot (my surviving terminators include 2 CML still)...charge into the remaining surviving squad

Everything in the vicinity of Logan is now dead

Logan must have run through 30 Drukhari single handedly

You guys need to get some games in with the new and improved Logan + terminators...Logan finally feels like the badass chapter master he should be

Very interesting reading TiguriusX - what are you having for your backfield protection / objective keepers?

A few questions :

What was the 2CP that allowed Logan to interrupt?

You use the Tacticus detachment - but GH aren't tacticus are they?  (I dont have the new codex yet ... GW had sold out :) )

Tacticus + assault Brethren is only 2DP.  What are you using for your 3rd - the termi one?

I always like to have at least some heavy hitting shooting as I'm usually facing a board full of massive monsters - I was thinking Eradicators?  I'd loved Predators + Vindicators, but we've lost them....

Edited by TiguriusX

We just entered Phase 3 of the Dominatus crusade we're playing, and I got my first game with the new codex in against some foot eldar.  My list is hardly competitive..  More like an attempt at portraying a balanced force of recruits, line soldiers, and veterans with vehicle support.  I forgot to use a lot of the new rules (didn't remember I paid for SuSH1 on 3 units till turn 5...) and I had a decent amount of anti-vehicle into an infantry skew, and it was still rough for my opponent.  He had a lot of board control early on by pressuring me in my deployment zone, and points were pretty even till turn 5, when I tabled him and pulled ahead on score.

5 WGT (usual loadout, with SuSH1 from Assault Brethren) + Crucible Character (Terminator captain with thunderhammer/helfrost pistol)

5 Terminators (1 CML + 1 chainfist) + Terminator Ancient (Imperium's Sword)

3 Headtakers (shields) + 3 wolves + Wolf Priest

10 Blood Claws (SuSH1)

10 Grey Hunters (SuSH1)

5 Wolf Scouts (plus doggo)

Redemptor (HOGC + HF)

3 Eradicators (melta)

2 Predator Annihilators

1 Land Raider

Eldar had a unit of storm guardians + warlock conclave + crucible Farseer, Dire Avengers + Crucible Autarch in Wave Serpent, 2x10 Warp Spiders, 2x10 Swooping Hawks, 2x10 Dark Reapers, 10 Banshees.

The lethality and durability I had was wild.  He jumped my blood claws turn 1 with 10 spiders and 10 hawks, killed 4 of them, then I countercharged and picked up the hawks with the 6 remaining blood claws, and ground out the spiders over a couple turns with pistols and chainswords.  Likewise, terminators with the ancient dropped in and wiped out his banshees, got return fire from 10 dark reapers, survived with the CML + sergeant + ancient to wipe the reapers.  And the grey hunters took fire from the other squad of dark reapers, got reduced to 5 models, then shot + charged the reapers to wipe them out.  The dreadnought by itself killed 10 hawks and 10 spiders because the new HOGC is dirty.

The Black Templars player on my team was playing into EC, and put down their Defiler turn 1 with 16 Dev wounds from a RepEx.  Bit of an outlier, but heck.

One bit of esoteric space wolves knowledge gleaned, that wasn't covered in various previews:

Grey Hunter Pack Leader now swaps his bolt pistol for a plasma pistol, not his carbine.  I thought it might be worth taking the carbine now and leaving the plasma pistol at home, but there's no need to choose.

I will note that any time one can afford, well, new edition, there's no points cost now, swapping a BP for a PP and keeping a BC is always a solid idea.

I'd just ask Grey Mane about this, however, I would figure that in the new edition GM would approve quite well. Not sure we'll get Grey Mane back.

I got my first game in at the weekend vs orks 85-74 victory for the wolves which I was very pleased with.

I was running SotGW and Assault Brethren

30 Grey hunters - 2x10 men with the sus enhancement (who split into 5s), and 1x10 with a battle leader and lance enhancement - Absolute stonking units.

The small ones kept scoring my pts for take and hold (OC3 is no joke, AoC kept them alive enough to just hold onto stuff with 1 or two guys left).

Assault bolters with 4 shots at S5 Ap1 are great, even in 5s. Cleared chaff with bolters, went toe to toe with 'harder' orks in combat, and a sole rhino at the end of the game denied the opponent 5 pts for bring it down

Logan with 5 terminators was also great (just not as great as nazdreg and friends due to AoC always being on for them). Was taking WGT as the -1 to wound/SS combo seemed a better option than more storm bolters when playing take and hold, but id certianly be interested in seeing how he gets on with regular termies. Great unit though, held down the midtable late game for an awesome showdown with Nazdreg and meganobz.

Brick of bladeguard with an ancient (imperium sowrd) and another battle leader attached was probably overkill. But they blended a whole killa-can squad before dying to massed ork shooting.

Las fusil eliminators sat upstairs on my home taking pot shots at Rigs and Cans all game. A nice option to put out some antitank when needed.

And my 3 melta eradicators were frankly really unlucky to not also pick up a dakkarig.

Overall, the new playstyle feels great. Doctrines add loads of flexibility, and our super doctrines are the chefs kiss on top. Combined with assault brethren enhancements, I had sustained on tap throughout, lance and precision when needed (5 grey hunters killed a warboss out of a unit with this), and other little tricks throughout (eradicators needed to assault and shoot one turn...cool, 1 cp allowed them to do this).

I was running what id term my '5th edition' style list (with some of the greybeards replaced with primaris equivalents as we no longer have long fangs!). But not only did the list feel strong (am not the most competitive of players), but it felt more like Space Wolves to me than they have done for the whole last edition. But maybe im just too attached to rhinos and grey hunters from the past :)

We should be as attached as possible to Grey Hunters and Rhinos from the past as possible, even with the changes between editions.

GH's + Rhinos may be a bit of a problem now, what with a difference model wise between PGH's and modeled old GH's, NorMarines as I call them. Can they go in a Rhino, even when using proxy rules? That's possibly an FAQ question?

Still, great to hear about the win, I will have to include more five man TDA and WGT as well, into my lists.

SW are benefiting from many small buffs that combine into major synergy for us

Rhinos holding 10 infantry means more GHs

Tacticus marines getting buffs means more GHs

New detachments and their buffs including GHs means more GHs

And funny enough...the loss of oath and oath+1 isnt hurting us because we already adjusted to lists without it

Other marines are playing catchup while we surge ahead with buffs

GH+rhino is about as old school as it gets for us

I welcome our new GH overlords!

Im not sure anyone in a casual environemnt would have any problems with you using older GH/putting them in rhinos. May raise a few eyebrows at tournments though (at the minumum theyd need to be on 32mm bases rather than 28mm if thats what they were on? I cant actually remember - Id already upscaled all my old grey hunters/5th ed army back when primaris first dropped (assault intercessors + mkiii heresy kits ftw), only 1 of my GH units is the actual new kit, but everything else is 'up to scale'.

Absolutely! Heres hoping they dont get points nerfed too hard whenever the next MFM drops. I could see them going up by 5-10 pts and still being viable, but anything more than that would be hard to take (esp after them being shelved for the last 2 years)

I played 1000 points against daemons yesterday and it was an uphill slog. In my defence I played a TAC list while my opponent brought 3 big beasts to the table.

TAKE AND HOLD Assault Brethren, Tacticus Assault Force
Cost Unit

75 Wolf Priest
230 6 WG Headtakers and 6 wolves
10 Furious Assault

180 Redemptor with plasma
150 Ballistus

85 5 Intercessors
80 Captain with Power Fist

180 Grey Hunters
10 Furious Assault

1000

Daemons: Take and Hold

Skarbrand

Shalexi Helbane

Soul Grinder

Twisted Epitome

10 Daemonettes

3 Flamers

The final score was a 59/64 victory for the daemons.  I was a bit disappointed as fighting 3 T10+ monsters effectively negated the boost from S4 to S5 on a lot of our attacks. Ironically my old Beastslayer list would have done better with free Lethal Hits all round.

My opponent was rolling incredibly hot with his invulernable saves all. The Ballistus and Redemptor contributed almost nothing to the battle as he never failed a 4+ save against the Ballistus and the Redemptor only managed put a handful of wounds on Shalexi in their protracted battle.

I took an early lead on Primary points and wiped out the small daemons pretty quickly but Shalexi gummed up my centre with her multiple stacked defenses while Skarbrand ran around lifting a unit a turn. I also drew poorly on secondaries for the later half of the game.

Still it is easy to blame luck or dice but I actually made some simple mistakes that cost me the game. I was intimidated by the Soul Grinder and made it my Quarry target for the Headtakers which was actually a big mistake as it is really more of a fire support unit and never left his DZ. If I had made Shalexi the Quarry, the Dev Wounds would have brought her down and bypassed that annoying invulnerable save. This would have got me Assassinate as well as preventing Shalexi from scoring a Primary on the last turn meaning I would have won with the same dice. Also it was my first game with the new Detachments and I missed using Relentless Assault to grant Lethals against the big daemons. Ah well, new army rules always bring a learning curve.

Having analysed my defeat, what actually worked well?

  • Grey Hunters really are as good as everyone says. They carved through the Daemonettes without breaking a sweat and their high OC meant that I scored Primaries even when both units were on the Objective. Careful use of Armour of Contempt kept them above half-strength for the entire game, even in the face the Soul Grinder's shooting. I wish I had remembered to use Relentless Assault on them as they put some damage on the Soulgrinder at the end in melee but would have done a whole lot better with Lethal Hits.
  • The Captain was great to keep the Command Points flowing. You want a Transhuman Strategist in every list!
  • The boosted Intercessors were OK but I missed Objective Secured in a Take and Hold list. They would probably work better in Priority Assets where you need the action economy. At higher points, I would look to trade them out for Company Heroes as they are better all-round and have ObjSec.
  • Wolf Priest and Headtakers with the wolves attached allow for some insane wound allocation Shenanigans. Shalexi has a bunch of 2D and 3D attacks but I was tanking these on the Wolves and then resurrecting them with the Priest in the next turn. It was only when Skarbrand waded in to tag team the Headtakers that they finally got dragged down. I would not be surprised to see this combo errated in the final codex as using the wolves as cheap ablative wounds and then healing them makes the unit unbelievably tanky.
  • The combo of Assault Brethren and Tacticus Attack Force is really good for a melee-orientated list and I will be using it again. I haven't tried SOTGW yet but these two have a great toolbox of Enhancements and Stratagems (I just need to remember to make full use of them  ).

I think SotGW shouldn't be overlooked, but I am feeling some of its drawbacks.  The super-doctrines bring pretty much everything you want. though Ferocious Strike may feel a little superfluous with the SuSH1 upgrade from Assault Brethren.  The enhancements are a little iffy.  I may just not be big brained enough to do Chariots of the Storm right, but it feels expensive and not super useful.  Grimnar's Mark is solid, Howlmaw is cheap but kinda useless.  Skjald's Foretelling seems good, but also a little expensive.  I'd kind of rather use Gene-Wrought Might out of Assault Brethren to get access to Lance on-demand.

Eye of the Pack is solid, we don't have access to rerolls like that in a lot of places.  It works well with our boosted strength and often wounding on a 3+.  Grimnar's Command is the equivalent of Adaptive Strategy, something you can otherwise only get in the 3 DP Gladius detachment.  Fangs of the Pack for mass precision, battle instincts for a good reactive move.  Wolf Totems is fine, good way to save some Terminators from mortal spam.

It's a solid basis for an infantry-heavy list.  It doesn't do a lot for vehicles, but bring Logan in there and you can make it happen (probably good for a turn of super-Devastator doctrine with assault and +1 to hit for all your vehicles' ranged weapons).

IMO Assault Brethren + Tacticus Attack Force is greater than spending 2 DP on the Saga of the Great Wolf if you use GHs

Assault Brethren gives you:

2nd assault doctrine turn

Furious assault unit upgrade giving sustain to infantry (GHs go super saiyan with this...and it sticks with both squads if you split into 2x5)

Fight on death (usually 3+ because you don't exit your rhinos without assault doctrine being activated) (bonus for my list this works for my Logan+Terminator brick too)

1 CP access to lance + extra AP (exactly what GHs need to hurt opposing elites or chip away at big stuff)

Tacticus Attack Force gives you:

Free rerolls on your advance to give consistent go turn distance when exiting rhino

1 CP GH interrupt

1 CP access to lethals v monster/vehicle (exactly what GHs need to punch up and chip away at big stuff)

You basically have a tool for every situation that arises during a game
