My dread is in the back of the new Marine codex? I really doubt that for some reason... It might be my other dread I did with the TL lascannon and ML arms...

Can anyone verify that? Lazarus, how'd you see it? I'm really curious now...

Yep, it's a twin-las and missile launcher dread with your colour scheme and chapter markings, and it's in the back of the new Marine Codex, I checked today. I'll go look and tell you your name from it and we'll see if it's true.

One thing that strikes me as odd. I painted the dread in a color scheme that should not be linked to me, I used a different background too, as not to make it too clear who's the dread is, and even tried a different battledamage style. And apparently it didn't help at all in keeping it anonimous... ;)

Chrono, I knew you had it wrapped up the minute I saw your entry! I'd like to see a few more close up shots of him, and a explaination of how you did your blending, tricks and all! I'm gunna give you a run for your money on the next contest!

I'll try to get that done this week. You can ask the more in detail Q's in the thread, once I get round to posting it.

I was pretty sure which one was Chrono's when I saw it come up in the contest. Excellent looking dread Chrono.

Next time I'll add a banner to the model saying "not chronos" :(

I have spent a lot of time on mine, probably only to see mikebutcher's nurgle blow it up on the battlefield in our next game.

Unless it's an ordance 6, you can leave it on the battlefield. ;)

still need Chrono and NightSerpent to pass their info over to me.

Just sent in the info. I was gaming at a tournie this weekend, so it didn't have the time.. Just wanted to sleep when I got home. ^_^

Cheers

Lazarus, ol' pal, if that really is my Dread in the back of the marine codex, you have made me happier than I care to say. That really makes up for just missing out on 3rd place! I always wanted a mini of mine immortalized in a GW codex or rulebook.

Let me know when you can.

Chrono - I think it was just the immaculate blending that gave it away. I also think it's just difficult for a painter to NOT paint things his or her way. I can look at your other things and just tell. Or maybe it's just a skill that other painters pick up as they paint more.

Looking forward to your notes on the process.

Oh, Everyone - a little side note - 3 out of 5 of the Dread contest winners are actually ORK PLAYERS as well! Don't that just getcha?!

WAAAAGH da secret greenskins!

Heh heh.

Okay, putting my beakie helmet back on...

:D whoah! quite the nice surprise!

Thanks, everyone! I really appreciated this contest, as I find a great benefit to entering. I work better with deadlines, otherwise I rarely get around to finishing anything. And, the friendly competiton really keeps me on my toes. So, even if I didn't place, I still would have come away with something.

I think I will get a bunch of paint with my prize money, as a lot of my favorite colors are running out.

Albator- what in particular would you like to know? It was an uncommon procedure for me, as I often use a lot of inks and drybrush with my greenskins. This is the most blending I have done, that's for sure. The base color is (appropriately) rotting flesh. It ties in well with the traditional deathgurad colors, but has a slight greenish tinge that makes it look slightly sour. It is a tricky model to paint, as it is incredibly busy. It was hard to find a balance between keeping a definite form and paying attention to the busy details.

@Nightserpent : Thanks for the reply ;). I would mostly like to know how you painted the rotting flesh. You highlighted with Bleached Bone ? White ? Over a black primer or a white one ? I'm sure others would have more questions so you could also start your own thread :D !

@Nightserpent:

Brilliant Dreadnought. It looks taller than usual. Did you stretch him at the waist? How did you do it, what did you use?

I'd also like ot know how you painted the reddish sore at the tips of the lascannons. Was is based rotting flesh and then gradually blended to red? I mean, did you use numerous extremely diluted red coats, or normally diluted paint, blended?

Thanks!

Botlman

Albator- I used bleached bone primer, actually! Highlight to a crisp white. Despite the fact that most dead and sick things look very dull and drab (color wise) I feel that the super clean areas provide a nice contrast to the icky parts.. and make them look even ickier. Also, I think it looks more interesting on the table top. If it gets too dark and drab, it looks too much like a silhouette.

Boltman- nope, no stretching, it is just how the model is sculpted. The only modifications I made was add the tabard and to splay the arms out a bit (so there not as rock 'em sock 'em robot 90 degree angle looking). The lascannon tips are just lots of diluted layers of mixed rotting flesh to red in increasingly red proportions.

hope that helps!

eurm....how long was this contest online? not that long to hope? if it was il have to slap myself ^_^

Only two to three months :D ... Are you going to do your slapping "old style", or are you using a wet mackerel? Be sure to keep an eye on this forum, there's already a teaser for the next comp!

Already posted a thread about the dread. Use the searchy function, try typing "empyrean guard", and have it search the modelling forum. Nice name ^_^

Cheers

Thanks. :D

About the name.

Thought that you can paint very well (your dread made me join this board) and have been following Commander Yellow's work too, so there you go. I'm hoping that if I use parts of each name that I can at some stage paint as well as you guys can. ;)

Anyway, congratulations on the win. Which dread arm did you or are you going to choose?

Best wishes.

I took a mkIV assault cannon and a mkIV closecombat arm for my upcoming venerable. Apparently I will have to move the plasmacannon for the Venerable dread, and make this guy a assaultcannon(which was part of the original plan, but I didn't think GW would make the plasmacannons obsolete). I'm making a drop pod army of the Empyrean Guard, so the only vehicles will be 3 dreads, and 6 or more speeders.

The rest will be foot sloggers. :D If you have further questions, feel free to PM me about the dread...

Cheers
