spyrer2000
Well, I played another game with my friend Nick down at the FLGS today. Nick brought his Necron force, a scary-looking collection of models that rounds out around 2,250. I brought my Swift Horde, and we compromised on 2,100 points or so each. I added back in my WGPL leader to my Storm Claws to make up the difference. Nick's list (to the best of my rememberance): Destroyer lord, 4+ invulnerable save, res orb Nightbringer Three Tomb Spyders Three Wraiths Three units of 10 Warriors Six Destroyers Three Heavy Destroyers We rolled Omega Recon, meaning that Nick would have very little on the board to begin with - just his Warriors. Nick wisely deployed near the back of his table edge. I took my pre-game move, and the game was on. (Side note: I want to apologize for the lack of details here - as a lot of folks know who regularly read my Batreps, I usually give a good blow-by-blow, turn-by-turn account. Unfortunately, lately, many of my Batreps have been reduced to giving highlights. Sadly, this one is no different. I played two games of Kill Team beforehand and dealt with a lot of distractions and spectators - including the dreaded little kid handling your miniatures - so I was nowhere near focused on the game, and it shows. I'll try to get better Batreps next time around - promise!) Nick shot at my approaching Grey Slayers, but failed to cause many wounds. In turn, I began blasting Necrons from afar with the Long Fangs and sallied everything forward towards his distant lines. Nick's first reinforcements included the Wraiths, whom he sailed into some ruins in front of one of my Wolf packs, and some Destroyers, whom he placed in front of his Warriors. My Fenrisian Wolves didn't do much this game - my biggest squad of 12 was destroyed in a failed bid to kill the Wraiths in the ruins, and the other two squads did little other than hold up Warrior squads for several turns. In the end, I had one Wolf left out of 32. A sorry day for my normally stellar-performing Fenrisian Wolves. By contrast, the Wulfen did extremely well. The Wolf Priest and Wulfen wiped out one Necron squad and put three Wounds on the Nightbringer when he showed up to join the party. Sadly, all the Wulfen and my Wolf Lord were slain by the angry star god. My Wolf Lord and Rune Priest avenged the Wolf Priest's death by simultanously thrusting their frost blades into the C'tan's chest (each caused an unsaved Wound), but the dying explosion slew five Storm Claws. Nick's Necron Lord performed admirably, slaying both squads of Grey Slayers and finishing off the Storm Claws. I took the Lord down once, but he got back up with three Wounds thanks to his ressurrection orb or phylactery or whatever it is. ^_^ I offered to concede, but Nick pointed out that he was close to phase out, and we continued the game. In the next two turns, the Rune Priest and Wolf Lord were destroyed by the last Tomb Spyder and Wraith, although the Wraith was destroyed as well. The Long Fangs took some pot shots at the remaining Warriors and phased Nick out. Although I had technically won, all I had left were my Long Fangs and one single Fenrisian Wolf, while Nick had his Lord, a Tomb Spyder, and some Warriors. In deference to Nick's excellent tactics and sportsmanship, I told him I hadn't felt that I had earned the win and called the game a draw. Nick's die rolling was freakishly good. Decoy good. His Warriors made 20 out of 24 armor saves, his Necron Lord hit and wounded 5 times out of 5 every turn. He only ever failed one Leadership check and the Wraiths almost made me cry in frustration as he ate Wolf after Wolf while making each and every WBB roll. It's interesting to be on the other side of Decoy-like luck  I also was reminded of a very important anti-Necron lesson: Focus on the Warriors. This game literally came down to the wire because I needed to kill a handful of Nick's Warriors to win the game. If I had not spent a few turns shooting Tomb Spyders with my Long Fangs, or if I had charged Nick's Warriors instead of the C'tan with my Rune Priest, this game would have been far more decisive in my favor. Lesson learned. Ignore EVERYTHING but the Necron Warriors. I can only blame my aforementioned lack of focus on my poor target selection skills. I killed a boatload of Nick's army, but unfortunately, not the stuff that mattered. Nick's an awesome guy and I had a great time, but I had to beat my head against the wall later thinking of all those chances I had to shoot Necron Warriors when I instead was firing on the Tomb Spyders. Argh! Technical Draw for the Swift Horde. We have an upcoming RTT next Sunday (the 20th), so wish me luck, guys. If I can stay focused, I think I'll do pretty well, but I do worry about encountering more Necron armies. spyrer2000
Yup ^_^ Nick was pretty impressed too, he had no idea that the Wulfen could roll that many 6's To be honest, even as unfocused as I was, this game should've been mine from the get-go thanks to Escalation. The problem was, not only was I distracted from what I should have been concentrating on, Nick was rolling like a freaking god of luck. I rolled midrange average, maybe even a little better. Nick was rolling like he was winning millions in Vegas. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/69350-2000-point-batrep-13th-co-vs-necrons/#findComment-791352 Share on other sites

As far as I remember they have three or so? But on the other hand I don Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/69350-2000-point-batrep-13th-co-vs-necrons/#findComment-791664 Share on other sites

WolfLordLars
Wow.. I am supprised to see 13th Co do so well against Necrons. Especially with a nightbringer on the field. I totally forgot that wulfen were str 5.. when you said they kept rolling 6's, I was like "woah! They gave them rending! about time!" Good lesson, hard learned. Shoot the Spyders right out of the gate, then focus on the warriors, and anything that helps WBB (Lords, specficly). If you had engaged his lord/warriors in CC rather than the nightbringer.. the star-got might not of even seen combat at all. spyrer2000
Hey Mar, good to see you. Yeah, Nick's a great guy to play with or against, and his generalship started out good and is getting even better. I imagine with a few more games under his belt, he'll be a force to be reckoned with in just about any game. Did you know he's starting Orks next? ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/69350-2000-point-batrep-13th-co-vs-necrons/#findComment-792612 Share on other sites
