Flames of Purgation
Hi, Having been experimenting with some of the more colour-intesnive painting finishes (a la bobby wong,e t.c) I had the idea of doing up a chapter of "Manga Marines", led by such notables as Chaplain Tamiya or commander I-Kore. Bright colours, exaggerated NMM, and of course, everyone has big eyes. Does anyone else find this funny, or should I just lay off the caffine for a while? Rogue Trader
Put down the red bull and step away... :P In all seriousness, I don't think Manga has any place in the 40k universe, it just doesn't fit with the grim, gothic setting that makes the game what it is. That's not to say bright colours don't have a place, especially amongst the Marines (Have pride in your colours is made for chapters like that), but Marines with big anime eyes? Aurelius Rex
Manga marines? +Shudder+ Personally I find the whole manga / anime thing very creepy for a number of reasons that I won't go into here, but beyond personal distaste I would say that the gothic style of the Imperium and the marines is diametrically opposed to that of manga. To me, the Tau seem to fit far more easily into that style, but marines? No. B) l Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/79738-manga-marines/#findComment-920430 Share on other sites
Tubal
Even the Tau aren't really all that manga beyond their battlesuits. Big-eyed marines will just look like some sort of xenos half-breed and be hunted down... rotwulf
manga can cover a large field. Sun Tzu has a manga actully. In an asian culture it comes in as many styles as you have normal writing today. that being said, i always see marines being in somber colors. We are after all a fighting force and bright colors draw attention. Why more marines don't use camo is beyond me. We are also in mourning for our father, who lay ever dying for us. ironloki
You could, if your really really really set on manga marines, is to try a xenos influenced chapter like that one using tau bits in the create a chapter GW competition B) That way you can combine some tau stuff an look more anime-ish :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/79738-manga-marines/#findComment-920626 Share on other sites
savage_phantom
I saw a conversion a while back (I think it was on dakka) it was a space marine bike converted to look like that bike in Akira. It was really cool but not very 40K-ish. Having said that though you could achive a manga/anime theme simply through painting styles such as NNM as you said. To be honest though I don't think that bright colors matter so much I think the effect would depend on scale, pose, and painting tecnique. Brother Sergeant Alasseo
I think you would have to resculpt their faces if you went with the large "anime-eyes" thing, as IMO if you just painted it it would run the risk of looking like too much makeup. Plus there is a tendency in more recent anime/manga (well, Ghost in the Shell is perhaps not that recent, but there are others) to move away from the large, easily emotive eyes to more in-scale, realistic looking ones. In fact, I think that they are now almost at about the same proportion as the exaggerated features of 40k minis. (also the large eyes was normally just female characters and young children iirc) With the whole bright colour bit, some of the best manga is purely monochrome (as is some of the worst, but that's just because it's cheaper), although most anime does go with the bright colours. The idea that it can't be dark and gothic though isn't necessarily the case: I know several art students who do a lot of work in manga, and much of it is brooding and gothic (well, maybe it's gothic lolita rather than just gothic, but there is a fair bit of grim darkness as well). And to answer yor original question: yes I do find it funny, but funny in a weird, probably-best-not-to-touch-it way. Gator_of_Bahamut
I think resculpting the models themselves to look like they're turning Japanese would be a bad idea, SD/Chibi avatars on this board aside. However, I do think giving them a particular manga/anime theme could be very cool. Maybe a mecha theme, especially Gundam might work. I can just picture all the marines with gold vees on their foreheads. An Evangelion styled chapter could work too. Just don't do Sailor Moon Sisters of Battle or Pokemon tyranids! Merkava Mk2
...Sailor Moon Sisters of Battle or Pokemon tyranids! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> the infamous, obvious, slaves-to-darkness meets slave-to-sanrio As mentioned before, manga doesn't necessarily imply 'cutesy.' Who's seen battle royale? Yeah, that was a manga. What's more, 'manga' marines wouldn't really have any connection to bright colours, as the term refers to what are usually black and white comic books. Manga is a medium, a format, referring to any arrangements of representative drawings in narrative sequence. It's of course associated strongly with the deformed, selectively detailed Japanese style, but most mangas are done in black and white, with an extensive shading process that produces finished art. "Anime" would be associated with bright colors, but that's a different medium with only a superficial stylistic similarities. ... +++ Mod Edit: Knock it off, Merkava. If you know that was out of line then don't type it, rather than make me clean up after you. Aurelius. +++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/79738-manga-marines/#findComment-924083 Share on other sites
