DIY chapter based on Romania, my country.

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

Let me start off with that I am glad that the B&C is back online. I must of missed its revival since I found out much later than all you keeners, lol. I used to be a member named Grans Master Cassius, but I had never any money, since then I had no iniative to develop any ideas for a DIY chapter. I had barely posted anything also. I come to you today my fellow brothers to ask of you to help me develop a chapter based on the Romanians, of which I was born and adopted from Bucharest there, the capital city. I have done an fair amount of research on Wikipedia on "Romania" and also such militaristic cultures, organiations such as the Greeks and Romans. I wish to base my chapter on my cultural heritage, and such, so if you have any ideas, information, or recommendations, I would gladly recieve them. Thankyou.

First welcome back as to your question wow you don't ask much for a start you have the right idea on using the World Wide Web for help maybe try the local library and museums for ideas. The only help i can offer is that if If I Remember Correct Romania has had Rome the Huns and i think the Germanic tribes as overlords for periods in there history.

I know it's not much but it's a start and keep the boars updated on your ideas and good luck

you more then likely know this better then i but it may help Linky

Space Wolf's probably typical of most Europeans/Americans. Romania and Transylvania makes people think of gypsies and vampires - which is probably unfair.

A good start might be for you to keep at your research for a while longer and see what you can find out. What really inspires you about the culture? What do you like, and what do you not? If you could come up with a list of things that you want to bring to your chapter, we can help you try to do so.

I know nothing of Romanian culture, but I'll give you a few tips on basing a chapter around a culture.

Firstly, don't try and bring everything from Culture to Chapter, sometimes it isn't going to fit.

Secondly, don't be afraid to being non-Culture themes into the Chapter

Thirdly, remember the Culture is probably old, so you will need to update it for 40k

Fourthly, make sure you like the Culture first.

I have a Romanian co-worker (Plus I'm part Romanian) and he gave me the following Romanian Site.

It's got a few good things to read.

Be careful with the Transylvanian aspect as that is something the Blood Angels have a claim on. Otherwise, you just have a Blue, Yellow and Red Blood Angels force.

+EDIT+ Link Fixed

Greetings,

A quick comment, my computer at home is down sadly and I am unable to use my mother's labtop, so I am still formulating my ideas and thoughts, and Grand Master Belial, the site that you have given me does not seem to work, though thankyou for your help. I was thinking of the colour suggestion as Romania's flag as you have implied. Any ideas at all would be gladly appreciated. Thankyou. Also I'm using my school computers so I don't really have that much time to reply back to you all. But to everyone else's posts, I shall soon reply back and with answers for you all. Thankyou again, and sorry for the inconvience. Ohy by the way I'm at school right now, editing this post, lol. I wich to focus my chapter on the greek and roman culture aspects of the romanians as they are culturally connected to them. I shall have more, soon, lol, theres the bell, cya!!!

Bernhard: Belial's link now works (he edited it). It's certainly good to see you're still around! :D We'll be glad to help you when your internet situation is sorted - which I hope is soon. I look forward to seeing your ideas. Until you present us with your ideas, you're probably not going to get much in the way of focused feedback. (If only because we have nothing to feed back upon ).
...Grand Master Belial, the site that you have given me does not seem to work, though thankyou for your help. I was thinking of the colour suggestion as Romania's flag as you have implied. Any ideas at all would be gladly appreciated.

I fixed the link. I'm still looking it over myself though I don't speak or read Romanian at all. Using a bit from recent history. You could make the Company flags with Numbers in the center like the old Romanian Flag with the black devise in the center.

Space Wolf's probably typical of most Europeans/Americans. Romania and Transylvania makes people think of gypsies and vampires - which is probably unfair.

your right about that...didnt say it was fair, thats just the way it is...kinda like people think Tibet is this mystical type place....Anyway i think the flag colors are a good start...is there anything important you can tell us about Romania? This way we can really help you and dont have to rely on gross generalizations...

Greetings,

I have a lovely lady waiting on me, so for that I shall have to make my next post quick. **Pulls out his 1-inch binder full or Romania's culture, Greek and Roman military tactics, history and everything else he could find. **Also pulls out his whomping 2-inch binder filled to the brim with 40k intersting findings and everything found useful.** I shall give a brief yet broad view of what I wish to have my chapter to be based on. Thankyou. I shall edit this post in a bit. Also when I move to a new computer, I am never able to log in to B&C on the new computer. Any ideas??? Okay, the lovely lady is gone,. whooh ;) .

Basically just like low fantasy, and high fantasy, I wish to add real depth and perception into the fluff, and history of my chapter in the warhammer 40k universe. I wish to show the gritiness and the true realization of war. I wich to show both sides of the conflict, the gratifying of gaining glory of the victor but also the loss of valued human life. Choosing to base my chapter on the culture of Romania has been a universally rich experience. I wish not so much to base my chapter on the government and diplomatic history of Romania, as with the corrupt governments and such, but it may well just become a factor. I would like my chapter to have signifigant connection to the roman empire, (in terms of military weapons, the gladius, but in which to have to use the greek shield the aspis. The Romans had adopted many of the similar techniques used by the Greeks. They are tied in with the founding of Romania, and I do enjoy researching Roman and Greek history. "The name of Romania comes from Roman which is a derivative of the word Romanus ("Roman") from Latin. I will update more stuff in a minute, sry just have to get organized.

Sry about the last post, butter fingers, sry this new system is really new for me, lol.

Here's a few more links. Focus is on history here.

History of Romania in English

Wikipedia Entry (Use at your own risk)

A massive list of links.

Remember that Romania was under Soviet control until it fell. So you can have the Chaplain be more of a political officer (Commissar) and have the 1st Company be the ruling body of the Chapter. Romania looks to be part mountainous, part hilly, and part plains. My brief reading led me to believe that Romania is more agrarian. Population is small.

Linking this into the codexes give me the following ideas:

Low population has the marines getting involved in planetary affairs. Marines go out and help farm the land. Similar to the Salamanders.

If you use the 1st Company ruling body then you have either a Dark Angel Inner Circle or a Space Wolves Wolf Guard. I would lean toward the Wolves as this better highlights the bureacratic structure and allows the noble leaders to lead the people from the ranks (and giving them additional meat shields). You can use the DA rules, but instead of Fallen, hunt the enemies of the people. Ravenwing would be more difficult to explain fluffwise.

Vlad the Impaler and the Romanticized Transylvania is the basic idea that gave rise to the Blood Angels. It can easily go back.

The Roman history leads to the Ultramarines background.

Gypsy to me suggest Harlequins and they aren't in Power Armor. ;)

+EDIT+ Please pardon the political leanings my post.

Greetings.

Ideas:

I wish to add a noble but more barbaric ( or less advanced civilization) due to that Romania was a conquered nations when the Romans first came and conquered it. Or they can be deprived in some way.

I would like to create homegrown rules based on the Space Wolves 13th Company, but maybe with the exception of heavy weapons, but instead Jump packs, and a new kind of Dreadnought, (would like to base it on a machine like mobile suits or such suits as in the show Escaflowne)that I am in the process of inventing. I personally favour one type of combat, even though it is not the most balanced and most flexible (which is close combat), it allows challenges and thats what I like, challenges. It also adds flavour and a certain animosity, and ambiguity to your chapter.

Just like in low and high fantasy I wish to have a mix of the grity realization of war, but also show how war, taken with glory can be taken to extreme effects. Like in Troy, my favourite line is "You see that beachead, that is immortality!!! Take it, it is yours." Something along those lines.

I wish my chapter not to be religious emperor serving freaks, or anything along this lines taking it to an extreme. They have a duty and they serve. The reason for that may be totally different, why they are serving???

This is all I came up with in a moment, sry soon, I will have a written down copy before I begin typing, and then my thoughts will be more coherent and precise. I will work on my thoughts and will each respond to each of your post in due time. Hopefully I will finally get paid from McDonald and get my computer fized this weekend.

I have to leave soon, and will be moving to a new computer, so then I will formulate some more thoughts and post them. I know that this is very loosely based, but it is really all I have time for right now. Tonight, I will formulate my ideas and write them down prompto, but I don't know when I will be able to go on the computer next. Also, I know I may contradict myself in certain areas; I know I'm not perfect, but I really like english and try to use all types of figurative devices and literary devices in the writing of my IA. of my chapter. In a way this will be mirror of my belief's and values of this world and warfare, adn bring that into the 40k universe. Do you see what I'm trying to do???

Greetings,

This is Barrett Hiebert here. This is my other acccount that I use instead of my other one because it does not allow me to log in on to B&C on other computers than the one I have been using; with my account that I should be using all the time, lol. I made this account only because I am unable to use my other one you see, lol. I am the one who started this topic by the way, lol. Weird huh, oh well, back to formulating my ideas. If there are any suggestions on why this is happening or how it can be fixed, I would gladly appreciate it, thanks for everything.

Bernhard Terroristos

I'd use "Be Switft as the Wind" trait and lots of fast stuff. There's lots of light horse tactics that came from that part of the world. Also the Space Wolves might work if you work the Varangian Guard angle. (They were Norse Mercs for the Byzantine empire. They used BIG axes. B) . Also I vaguely remember something about Wallachian/ Transylvanian nobles being called Voivodes. Ya might be able to work that in for a Romanian flavor for your army.

Hope it helps

i was just gona suggest the above.

as historically Romania is the apex of where the west turns into the east (at least in european term), i would use alot of that.

for example, the ottoman empires attempt to conquer it. The arrival of the Hun. The soviet occupation etc.

something like the pre heresy sons of horus, a bit feral but not as feral as SW, but with cav!

would suggest 'be swift as the wind' and 'no mercy, no respite' traits with 'flesh over steel' and 'death before dishonour' as disadvantages.

a kind of fast moving cav based army.

Greetings all,

I have finally clearly decided on which culture I will be basing my chapter on. It will be the Dacians who were part of the Thracian people. From Wikipedia, a thread; I have found more than enough imformation to base on for my chapter culture and way of war. Though before I will be able to sort it all out, it may be a little while (there is a lot of printing and reading to do, lol :P) Best wishes to all of you, and thanks so much for helping me try to sort out which part of the culture I was going to choose. Though I am not nearly finished, so once I present you with evident research, we shall have to put on our brain caps to flesh out the rules and such. It has only just begun. MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again.

Bernhard Terroristos

Greetings,

I have finally been able to send my computer in today for a look up. Hopefully it doesn't cost that much. Also recieving my [pay cheque, I am saving up for the materials necessary to produce my DIY chapter. I will be trying to find as much time this weekend to flesh out my research and import something substantial, for all you to wrap your minds around. So a good weekend to you all and happy hunting. Cheers! ;) Also if you go to Wikipedia, and type in the word Rhomphaia, the eternal link "Christopher Webbers Thracian site" is where I'm getting almost all of my information. I have also been looking at Dacian, and Thracian, and falx. All useful in one way or another, and many more. Also I have alot of homework and work this weekend, so it may be a little wait. Sry.

Bernhard Terroristos

Greetings,

I have been researching into the Thracian/Dacian culture and the hallmark of warfare for them was light/heavy calvary commonly being armed with bows and light-infantry such as peltasts, also they commonly used heavy infantry hoplites as mercenaries. The weapon that was rightly feared and respected was the rhomphaia, which was another hallmark of the Thracians as a people. The Dacians used a weapon called a falx which is commonly referred to as a battle-scythe. (I wish to make this weapon my standard weapon of choice and all other Dacian/Thracian derivatives) Also a main equipment was the theuros (a certain type of shield, and the peltarion for the peltasts) (Also their armaments consisted of javelins, spears and other certain types of swords.) Other than this, this is all I have time to give you on information. Just a quick comment, I know that the Thracians/Dacians developed the tactic and infantry known as the peltast, and of which the Greek "peltast" derived from, but I would not wish to invent the scout all over again using the peltast as my area of interest. I would like to invent a power-armoured unit with skirmishing and close-combat abilities more so blending the holplite and peltast into one. Just some ideas to throw around. Also any suggestions??? Thanks for reading.

Greetings,

It has been a time forgotten by time that I have been able to sit down purposefully, and revisit with no disruptions whatsoever the history of my people, and the dimensions of Warhammer 40k. It is more than just reasons for developing an Index Astartes, in this grand universe of Warhammer 40k, that has been graciously supplied to us in its precedented form. I love to do my homework as complete as possible, and in order to first develop a corresponding Index Astartes, one must first understand the dimensions of the universe of Warhammer 40k as complete as possible.

To just repeat for the sake of my "apostrophe", Warhammer 40k is a dystopian and a degenerate galaxy spanning empire; while

(/quote/) Wikipedia

"The physical setting of this story is the Materium, with all action here in the Milky Way Galaxy. Much of this is controlled by the The Imperium of Man, though it is not the only galactic denizen. Other races include the Orks, a greenskinned trollike race, and the Eldar, the former rulers of a great empire. A dynamic, galaxy-spanning story line is possible because of a separate plane of existence, the Immaterium or "Warp." The Warp is described as a realm of thought, where desires and emotions can take physical form, and with currents and eddies that make traveling vast interstellar distances difficult, yet possible. As this is a realm of thought, a coalescence yields the often sinister warp entity. The strongest of these entities are the Chaos Gods, Khorne (a god of rage, bloodshed and war), Nurgle (a god of despair and decay), Tzeentch (a god of change, deception, scheming and magic) and Slaanesh (a god of pleasure, pain, depravity and decadence).

The Gods of Chaos are the result of the darkest impulses in the living souls of the universe's inhabitants. Their cults have a dynamic and antagonistic relationship. Khorne opposes Slaanesh, while Nurgle opposes Tzeentch. Nurgle is the personification of powerlessness, Tzeentch personifies power, Khorne personifies duty and rage, and Slaanesh personifies the epicurean or the sensual. These four Dark Powers are not the only entities in the Warp, but they are the greatest and most powerful. It is said, in the background to Warhammer 40,000, that the nature of the Warp is beyond human comprehension and is truly unknowable."

Most players understand that this is clearly recognizable and prestigely displayed in the fluff of the game. What I am trying to understand is what I can and can't do in the creation of my Liber Astartes, and to the limits I can aspire to to make my chapter surprisingly unique as possible.

Once I had developed the idea to develop a whole complete new codex on the historically accurate people of the Romanians, the Dacians; I was hooked, and could not be persuaded in my wildest dreams to return to the borders that I had previously envisioned my creation adhering to, which was of my ultimate favourites as Space Wolves, White Scars, Raven Guard, and Salamanders. I was hoping to play one of these chapters or develop a base chapter on their astounding characteristics. Don't get me wrong, I do like the characteristics and fluff of other chapters (certain parts more than others), but truly the challenge of creating an Index Astartes from scratch was truly the one for me.

I had begun to start collecting everything that interested me, fluff-wise, and rule-wise, anything that was useful, also starting to research on the Dacians. I have now, personally, collected enough such research to start making an articulated effort at finally displaying my ideas and the logical reasoning in my head. Be warned though, that I have not written down any work, but have contained it all in my head. A jumbled-heap of emotions and ideas waiting to be expressed.

First off: I have been diligently trying to follow the rules of "The Do's and Don't's of DIY"

1. Do be original as possible:

"Do not try to copy the idea wholesale; add something away, twist it about a little, you might surprise yourself with what the end result is..."

Due to this quote I have decided that I will not take only just one culture as the Dacians in this case, but (due to my heritage as a Canadian and my interests in Rome-Romania, and the culture of the Japanese) will blend all such different concepts of each culture into a chapter.

2. Do read as much background material as you can get your hands on:

I think I have sucessfully tackled this situation, having ample enough-though jumbled resources as one adaquately prepared for such an endevour can be.

3. Do specific research related to your chapter.

This part is clearly done yet ill-defined as yet, for I have not been able to effectively contain my ideas together into a distinguishable manner.

4. Do a rough outline outline of your ideas first.

I would but this definite "Do" collides with 3. and so 3. must be completed to satisfaction for this to be completed.

5. Do keep it simple.

K.I.S.S- An anchronism I try to live by every single day, but my main idea is by the extension of Chaos, which has been allegedly portrayed as evil, cackling "bad guys" adorned with spikes and skulls by recent additions. I wish to show the more gritiness realization that of Man vs. Himself. More like Low Fantasy, than High Fantasy, as is chaos is just the physical, and mental manifestations of inner psyches having inner form and influence. As every action has a consequence, and the effects no matter how small are detrimental in the maturity of the human race as possible. As such I refer back to the "precedence" of Warhammer 40k, this whole game is developed due to the continuing struggle of mankind and himself taking parts from history and cultures as can be clearly be shown in the development of the game as a whole. I have been unable to get my hands on the book "Horus Rising" by Dan Abbett., but I was able to read the first chapter due to a generous, you could say "sneak peek". Even the first chapter had me craving for me, as I read the ultimate moral, of the Warhammer 40k Universe that I believe is so true in sense of Humanity. The quote which was said by the old man being confronted by the Captain, of who was narrating the story was along these lines, "Once you understand the ultimate truth, that of which is immoral, you yourself become unmoral." I was hoping to create my chapter based on an anthromorphic, totemic scale like the Space Wolves, while showing "Can man ever truly rise above the level of a mere beast?" This again re-instates the fact of Man vs. Himself.

Everything I've thought is there for a reason, as is my name. My real name is Barrett, and I was commonly referred to as a bear in real life, down to physical and mental characteristic's, believe it or not. I was hoping to model the world as a largified landscape of the geography of Romania, and have the bear as my totemistic, anthromoporphic animal. Though the animal would be mutated in some forms due to the continuing effects effects on chaos on the population. Therefore, the aspirants would have to bond, do a mind meld with the animal, Canadian native rituals, or animal spirit in sense.

6. Do let the fluff dictate the traits, not vice-versa.

This is exactly what I am going to build up to, but at first I wanted to include these certain special rules, or these characteristics of a certain trait, but I found that it was totally impossible to create something so much your own if you were to take first what someone else had created and molded it into your totally new and un-uniform situation.

7. Do use a stable geneseed.

I hope that this is the final outcome to my decision as what a type of geneseed I should use, as it meshes completely with the flaws of humankind. That it was not caused by a corrupted geneseed, which ultimately was caused by the "chaos" that in the Warhammer 40k universe is alive in all our souls, just more accentuated in some than others by choice or by force of will.

8. Do remember that ambiguity in the right place can be a good thing.

I understand that ambiguity used correctly can be very unique and persuasive, but isn't humanity in its state in real life as the Warhammer 40k full of doubt and uncertainty? Is life directed by fate?

For now, this is all I have to say, it is 4:12pm in St.Albert right now, and I am still formulating my thoughts, just thought to finish what I first wrote. I am next going to use historical research of the cultures to direct my thoughts as to my chapters origins. For it is truth that the culture, time period of the planet should have a direct impact in the Index Astarted of the Space Marine Chapter that is being created due to the initiates of the recruiting planet.

Ideas and Reasoning

My chapter's homeworld would be based on a world much like the topography of Romania which is almost evenly divided among mountains (31 percent), hills (33 percent), and plains (36 percent).

http://www.country-data.com/frd/cs/romania/ro02_01a.jpg

By recent archeological evidence, it was found that Dacian civilization was a binary one, a civilization of wood doubled by an iron one of La Tene type perfectly comparable to the Celtic one and not below of the Roman one. The research allowed us to greatly define both the iron civilization of the Dacians and the role of mettalurgy in the evolution the Dacian civilization. Weapons, and tools are among the elements that could illustrate the degree of civilization of a population. Such a early apparition of iron manufacturing shows the level which this craft reached in the flourishing period of the Dacian state. The skilled Getae-Dacian craftsmen, who were manufacturing for a long time and with special skill the bonze, learned also the iron manufacturing, which involves a more complicated technology. In the blacksmith workshops, which have a rich inventory of anvils, sledge hammers, hammers, tongs of various forms and shapes, chisel gabs, mandrels, filess, the Dacian craftsmen were making a big variety of tools and weapons. The iron pieces were processed though hammering, it was heated and then flattened and the desired form of the object was shaped. The piece was cut with chisels and then welded through heated ramming or drilled. The quality of the pieces is proven by the absence of slag traces in finished pieces or by the absence of the pieces uncouthly manufactured. The different processes of hardening were assuring the toughness and resilience of the manufactures iron pieces. The craftsmanship of the native smiths regarding the hardening is demonstrated by the fact that all the found pieces are hardened, and even more, the hardening is not uniform, but unevenly executed, only on the active parts of the piece. The basic agricultural tools, numerous artisan tools and and impressive military arsenal were all made of iron The smith workshops discovered both inside and outside the Carpathian arch were capable to satisfy the iron made objects of all communities on the entire Dacian territory.

Greetings,

Again I will try and continue until my constitution is utterly wasted, and hope that the read is not too tough on the eyes. My apologies if I have made anyone blind; I am hoping to include more colourful pictures from now on, or at least more interesting ones.

Continuing from before...Ahem!

Due to the evidence I presented before, I wish to show my chapter's extent of their civilization, and the dependence on a civilization binary of iron and wood, with rules which are relevant, or totally unlike to the Salamanders fluff and special latest edition rules before they were taken over by the modern, correspondent fluff system.

http://www.beavton.k12.or.us/jacob_wismer/resources/fortvancouver/blacksmith1.jpg

The weapon that I have become enthralled by, and and of which I intend to be a uniting and outstanding force is the Dacians use of the falx. It is assumed that the scythe is a North-Thracian invention, having the center inside the Carpathian arch, and from the scythe was subsequently developed the national weapon of the Dacians, the DACIAN FALX

Bernhard - you're putting a great level of research into your chapter; that's entirely commendable, and I think it will likely pay off for you upon completion of the project. The idea of using the falx is a good one. Be careful of copying the real-world too much into the 40k universe. The Ultramarines have Roman Influences, but they're not 'Space Romans'.

Greetings,

Commissar Molotov:

Thankyou for your comment; I understand that I have been doing a vast amount of reserach, and that it is a wise precaution:

Be careful of copying the real-world too much into the 40k universe.
I hopefully do not want this to be the final outcome, as #1, in Post 22. This is just showing where my homegrown rules can derive from. Personally, I think that people are going to be ultimately surprised with the final outcome of my ideas, the ideas and reasoning.

The idea of a falx is a good one.

Thankyou, I am hoping as I described to make this an underlying theme in my army, and in my fluff, the dual appearance of the common peasant, which I find can be very presentable in the age of Warhammer 40k.

Thank you again, and don't stay up too late. :)
