Tagsta's Lava Base Tutorial

This Tutorial is supposed to be a basic method to create a high number of good looking lava bases in a rather short time.

If you follow these 6 Steps you can easily base your whole army in a lava theme. A higher standard for Showcase Minis is also possible.

Just practise the Basic Tutorial a little bit and then try the same thing with a larger amount of colours.

Enough talking, let's begin:

ROCKS:

black undercoat

drybrush with codex grey

drybrush again with fortress grey

LAVA:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/Tagsta/Warhammer40k/tutorial.jpg

the basic colour for the lava spots is red gore (STEP 1)

paint the red gore undercoat with spots of blood red (but leave a rim red gore visible) (STEP 2)

continue the procedure with...

...blazing orange (STEP 3)

...golden yellow + bad moon yellow (STEP 4)

and eventually add a tiny spot of white in the center of the lava (the hottest spot) (STEP 5)

the basic lava base is done! quite easy, isn't it?

Advanced Lava (Source Lightning) (STEP6)

You can add a Source Lightning effect to the stones, if you like to...

Imagine the tiny lava bubbles as the light source...

Drybrush a large circle of red gore on the rock.

Add a smaller circle of blood red.

add another small circle of blazing orange

add an even smaller circle of golden yellow...

You're done. congratulations

The effect is very spectacular indeed.

Well done.

Maybe if the Tut. was more elaborate/organised better it would be even more useful?

Like with Step 1, Step2...

But still, good illustrative pics, and it's concise, so nice job.

Sweet Tutorial! I may just start using Lava Bases for my own models... :)

Is that Slate your using for the rocks? Any idea where you can get small amouts of that stuff? 'Cuz last time I found some it was in a huge bag--way to heavy for me to carry by myself, and it had so much in it that it was kind of obvious I'd never use it all lol B)

Thanks,

SkyTalon

For the slate I use on my bases I just went to the local Hardware store and picked up araw slate tile from the flooring section. Then take a hammer to it B) It'll cost you maybe 3 bucks and you'll get nice, random shapes.

Of course.. the only problem wiht that is you often get nice, random shapes :) The result is usually about 70% of the chips and pieces I can use, about 30% are etiher Just too big, but not big enough to be broken again or "dust in the wind"-small.

I like the effect. Especially the glow on the rock. That looks v. cool.

a source lightning technique from CMON...

Pick the bubbles as the light centre.

Drybrush the rock with red tones in a wide circle

Continue that procedure with the same colours that I described above.

make sure that you leave shades of the darker colour tones visible.

hope that that quick description it is understandable

Is that Slate your using for the rocks?

No. I used Polystyrene and did a little carving work.
