Anyone have any experience of BFG. I was thinking of building a Dark Angels fleet to transport my DW to Medusa V.

But is it worth the expense, time and effort?

Good or bad expereinces welcome.

[Mods: I know this isn't the Forum for this topic really- but ti would be nic to get Marine players views].

cheers

Amazingly, SM's are not the 'bestest' in BFG. They're ships are designed to storm enemy planets or board enemy ships, as a result their weapons are short-ranged.

The Imperial Navy is king.

For this reason, I'd take SM's. It proves whether your like many others who play SM's 40k because they're easy to win with and get lots of new toys and support; or whether you actually like the SM's fluff and character and want to extend your army into another field, i.e. BFG.

It depends on your viewpoint. I feel awkward using my IH fleet, because, according to fluff I have a company of Marines maximum, yet, that means I have one Strike Cruiser and a whole lot of escorts. Fun to use, but has certain drawbacks. On the other hand, the alternative seems rather unusual, having my 100-man company riding around in a Battlebarge and several Strike Cruisers... ;)

BFG is incredibly fun though. It's quite cheap getting into it and the models couldn't be any easier to assemble and paint.

Well, you have to expand of course.

Like in Epic, the army you field won't be your 40k army down to the letter. It will be a much larger army probably including several Companies- including your 40k army amongst them.

BFG is even worse, because your ships are not connected to your 40k army directly- you don't take Strike Cruisers very often in 40k. So in this case they'd be from the same Chapter, IH's, and may or may not be carrying your 40k army alongside several other companies.

You could always say the rest of the Battle Brothers are fighting in a different Sector... or even being held in reserve ready to Land once you've cleared an LZ...

yes battle fleet gothic IS very much worth the money and time, like i was saying in a differant post, it can mix in with your 40k game and its a ton of fun, throw in a few boarding missions, and figure out what works for your team, what my group does is you finish an objective usually 500 pts vs 1000, and you try to do as much damage to the ship as you can and either teleport out at a given point OR die. and what ever damage is done happens to the actual ship in your gothic field (instead of rolling), its alot of fun try it out!

what ever you decide have fun on the battle field ;)

Battlefleet Gothic is by far, in my opinion, the best game in the Warhammer 40k universe.

If Napoleonic era warship broadsides are your thing, this is your game. BFG has a wonderful system of combat that actually requires tactics and understanding of ranges and the multiple ship classes.

I adore BFG.

In short, yes. its comparitively cheap, the rules are crystal clear, and its fun as heck. besides, nothing is better than putting a torpedo through the bridge of the opposing fleets flagship (....intensify forward firepower...... too late.. :) ) i would say go for it.

I'd totally recommend it. Unfortunately the SM fleet is sort of a blunt force weapon. Strike Cruisers are too cheap and Battle Barges are too expensive, so the fleet can also get a bit boring. My recommendation: Retribution Class Venerable Battle Barge :)

The Imperial Navy is really cool though. They use more traditional naval warfare (Broadsides, ramming, etc.). They're in my opinion the fluffiest fleet around.

No, no, the single Strike Cruiser is fielded because, according to fluff, all I'm supposed to have is a company. A Strike Cruiser carries 100 Marines, so technically I shouldn't have anything else (like a Battle Barge). I make up for it with a Battlecruiser though.

However, I did have an incredibly fun time playing my escort-exclusive fleet against a Ramship-exclusive fleet. We inconclusively chased each other around in circles...

BFG to be fluffy or not is up to you

I my self have played games as large as 4000 pts Invasion fleet Vs Tau fleet

While the the Imperial Navy is more flexable it is by far King

Anyone ever Face down the necron tomb ship knows better

On average I play between 1000 to 1500 points

Oof. I feel like some old Imperial Admiral.

I play games of 2500 points minimum, Chaos vs. Imperial Navy. They're always great games.

As for the acquisition of these free rules, go to your traditional login for GW - OZ, or USA, or UK, or Mars... - and look for the "specialist games" link. It is generally quite small on the screen, often overshadowed by large fonts for thier more lucrative games, so one must search hard. After seeing said link: click it. That will take you to the website and its wonderful downloads section.

Ah BFG. There is nothing like a good torpedo salvo into your opponents fleet to wake you up in the morning...

Ok thanks for all the positive replies. I took the time to download all the pdfs from the BFG/Specialist games site and will read through over the next few days.

Is there a Fleet list/Codex as such for Adeptus Astartes Fleets or have I just missed it? Someone I know mentioned it had been taked down for some reason and was no longer available.

cheers

Alot of ships dont have models and need to be converted (no really, go into army builder and check out the range of Imperial cruisers) i plan to have a Xenos Dark Eldar fleet but i keep thinking of playing marines because yellow cruisers just sounds too cool to miss.
