Military structure

As a direct result of the limited numbers of personnel, the Order of the Rose Raven responds to a threat in a very standardised manner. The tactics and deployment they employ indicates that the individual task forces this order dispatches are structured to a great extent, and while there may be slight variations, there always is a standard template these fiery warriors operate by. During my research in the Ministorum archives, I have found the structure of one of their more successful task forces:

Dammit, oblit, you stole my paint scheme! *lol*

Very nice work! Is this something you've been working on a while or did you just pull this out of your keister fairly recently? There are no closeups, so I really can't give an in-depth critique, but everything looks pretty good from where I'm sitting. I also like the FW-pattern Immie with the extra armor; hard on the wallet but easy on the eyes :P Post the cannoness when you get her finished, please.

Awesome work. That gives me motivation to pull my paint out and touch up my Sisters again. I *love* the idea of using the white with purple for the Celestines. Mind if I try that myself? If so, I'd like to hear how you did the white as last time I did around 13 coats of very thin white and it still didn't turn out quite right. Did you use a brown ink wash?

Lookin fantastic Oblit, NICELY done :P

After seeing all these pretty models, it makes me wonder if 1. Ill ever get my sisters to look that good and 2. if ill ever get that many sisters painted before the year 2020.

And boy, the FW Immolator looks GORGEOUS. And to think I was happy with my Modular weapons guide for it. Might have to go back and tweak some of the weapons perhaps, as I find those Heavy Flamers, absolutely stunning!

The Celestians, although look great and stand out from the rest of the Sisters (as they should) for some reason the white looks a tad bit 'bland' compared to the pink you have chosen for the robes. But hey, it looks fantastic, so go with it ;) On another note i believe the Rhino transport is supposed to be 58 pts for the Celestians, not 68 pts ;)

Otherwise, fantastic work there :D

Sure, go ahead! I basecoated Snakebite Leather, added Bubonic Brown until it was pure Bubonic Brown, highlighted further up to Bleached Bone, and finally up to pure Skull White. No washes were used on the robes.

Well, the white does work better IRL, sure it's not as vibrant as the purple/pink, as I tried to give it a more 'earthy' look to show there more pious & pure. I'm not sure if it would work for an entire army, but it works to pick out one specific unit.

And the Rhino actually is 68 points: Rhino + smoke launchers + extra armour + extra pintle-mounted storm bolter ;) .

There are no closeups, so I really can't give an in-depth critique, but everything looks pretty good from where I'm sitting.

If you're interested in close-ups, check out my Photobucket account. Anyway, here's some teasers:

How long have you been working on them? Can't wait to see your Immolator, please keep us updated.

I started painting the first squad about a month before The Crash, and at the moment I only need to complete my Celestians, my Canoness, and 2 vehicles. I expect to have 1500 points painted up before the summer (summers start late here in Belgium ;) )

The purpose of this thread is to update it so it contains the latest pictures, fluff, army lists etc., basically process from the baby steps into a new army up to the finished product (well, as far as an army can actually be finished ;) ). I also hope to get some input and feedback from you guys, especially when I start to work on the fluff.

Dude!! How many storm bolters do you want on a single Rhino :P

I personally havent thought about adding an EXTRA storm bolter ontop of a Rhino before, but given the new rules, having 4 24" shots isnt a bad thing at all, and thats before factoring in movement, so it isnt a bad idea, might have to give it a tad bit of thought since i find the idea of using an Immolator as a transport not as profitable as i originally had thought (especially when factoring in squad sizes for Acts of Faith etc).

Funnily enough, im drilling out a storm bolter for one of my Sisters and boy is it not as fun as plastic makes it out to be.

Nonetheless, a fantastic army there Oblit, and i cant even find a flaw in any of your squads either (weapons and wargear wise). I take it you've gone the auspex route in the event you go against an army with infiltrators?

I take it you've gone the auspex route in the event you go against an army with infiltrators?

Yup, that, and I had some points left :D ... My regular opponents are happy Eldar and Tyranids. The bugs have an infiltrating Broodlord with some 'stealers, so I can use every extra shots I get. The Eldar player also has some infiltrators, but he mostly deploys normally. The auspexes are there in case he changes his mind...

Always good to cover your bases

Just a random question (this has actually been on the top of my mind for some time now as well). I noticed you went for the single Inferno Pistol Sister for both your Seraphim, over say equipping them all each with Melta bombs. What made you go the Inferno Pistol route vs the Melta Bombs? (if you were wondering what my actual question was, its mainly the concept of Melta Bombs vs Inferno Pistols in Seraphim Squads).

So you've basically gone the Inferno pistol route due to theme vs effectiveness?

Not too bad, i too would lean towards that way as well (plus having a few shots with the Inferno pistil BEFORE charging is ALWAYS nice).

History and beliefs

Located on the outer rim of the Segmentum Obscurus, the Folkvang system was initially colonised as an outpost of the Imperium, monitoring the borders of known space for incursions by pirating aliens.

The colonisation of Folkvang IV

Colonists on Folkvang IV soon discovered a large number of caves under the surface, containing vast reserves of raw Promethium. Large mining colonies soon speckled the surface of this large planet, and to protect the workers flowing to Folkvang vast communities were founded, taking a number of mine entrances and hab buildings, and building thick concrete walls with built-in shield generators.

To make sure the citizens of these colonies did not stray too much from the light of the Imperium, the Ecclesiarchy ordered the building of large cathedrals, and ships filled with clerics and Battle Sisters of the Order of Our Martyred Ladysoon followed the original settlers.

In the years following this initial colonisation, pioneers were sent out to the other planets of the Folkvang system, and the Ecclesiarchy soon followed in their wake. All went well from there on, the Promethium found in the system proved to be a source of great wealth, and soon the system was lost in the archives of the Ministorum. Meanwhile, the Adepta Sororitas stationed in the system strayed from their original beliefs and habits, and slowly took on a culture of their own.

And brother fights brother...

Centuries after the initial colonisation of Folkvang IV, contact with some of the smaller farming communities was lost. Arbites patrols sent out to check on these communities disappeared into thin air, and rumours came that a vile disease was causing havoc ouside the fortified walls of the mining communities. A platoon of the Folkvang PDF was dispatched to 'contain' the problem, but three days after their leaving they returned to the walls of the planet's capital, their rotten flesh barely holding on to their bones, liquified organs dripping on their uniforms, and tanks covered in fungus rolled in their midst.

The shields were raised, and the mining cities were cut off from the rest of the planet. A fierce battle for survival begun. Astropaths managed to send a distress call, but without hope of rescue the remaining PDF, Arbites and Sororitas quickly organised the defense of the main communities. However, the enemy was too numerous. Corrupted guardsmen fell before they reached the wall, only to stand back up and continue charge. After the third week, all but two cities were completely overrun by the undead, but suddenly there appeared a fleet in orbit. So their calls were answered at last!

The Inquisitor in charge of the fleet contacted the planet surface to see the nature of this evil, and was so impressed by the fierce fight the defenders of the two remaining colonies had given the heretics that he decided to get them off planet. The planet itself could not be saved. Right after the last Sister boarded the last shuttle, blue energy pulses descended from the sky, tearing up the ground from around the millions of undead, and igniting the raw Promethium veins running under the surface. The entire planet was engulfed in a purifying fire that lasted for 7 weeks.

Order of the Rose Raven

The rescued Sisters changed the color of their robes from red to purple/pink in memory of the small pink flower that was the symbol of Folkvang IV, and their armour was edged in gold so they would always remember the inferno that has destroyed their planet. Thus the order of the Rose Raven was born.

The remaining Sisters are now in private service of the Inquisitor that has saved them, and are now on a constant cruscade to find the evil that has caused the fall of their planet.

They do maintain a small convent on Folkvang III, a volcanic death world in the vicinity of Folkvang IV, where they recrute maidens from the local populace to replace those Sisters lost in the never-ending cruscade, but it is an unwritten law that there can never be more members of the Order of the Rose Raven than the number that escaped Folkvang IV on that sad day.

Now that is some excellent background right there Oblit, very impressive, well done

Sounds like the hand of nurgle, thought he had a cling on things, but was still in for a big surprise!

Yes, excellent background for a very lovely looking collection of minis :)

Quick question, what did you use to make the lil system planetary map? Gives the background, a good edge (if that makes any sense).

Quick question, what did you use to make the lil system planetary map? Gives the background, a good edge (if that makes any sense).

I made it in Adobe Photoshop 7.0, with the help of a few tutorials I found on the net... I enjoyed creating this little system almost as much as I enjoyed creating the fluff. I'm planning on using this system as a 'base of operations' for my future fluff, maybe even work out a campaign map for one of the planets. Anyway, when I do, you'll find it here first  .

Greetings, Inquisitor.

Finally our fleet emerges from the Immaterium! It seems months have past since we sailed into that sea of madness! Upon entering real space, we were contacted by one of our own black ships. It seems there had been heavy fighting with a number of Xenos pirates, and after a fierce battle, they were left for dead, drifting aimlessly through the debris of battle. A rescue mission was sent to the wreckage, resulting in the addition of some valuable assets to our cruscading force.

I really like what I'm seeing. Only thing I'm not so fond of is the black/yellow warning stripes on the heavy bolters and the inviscerator. I don't really think that they fits in. It breaks up the scheme a bit too much imo.

Also, the brightness of the purple/pink seems to vary quite a bit. Is this because of the way you shot the pictures, or is it intentional?

The background is excellent as well. Always nice to see nordic mythology work it's way into people's armies.

The differences in brightness are caused by different lighting conditions because I took the pictures at different times. I don't have a proper lighting installation, and always photograph in daylight, so picture quality can vary a bit.

I wouldn't mind knowing how the pink/purple was done, it's beautiful! Care to enlighten us?

Prime black (because when painting a black army, who in their right mind would prime right :) )

On the infantry, I basecoated using Warlock Purple. I added more and more Tentacle Pink to the purple for highlights, up to pure Tentacle Pink. For the vehicles I used this same recipe, but I glazed the result with some water+detergent+Warlock Purple because it looked too influenced by Slaanesh :)

I love the 3d effect on the round surfaces, eg the heavy bolter ammunition. is that the camera casting shadows or did you paint those and if you did tell me how! lol

The light will have something to do with it, as both the examples you are giving have been painted with a metal color. Each metal area has also received a wash, which makes the details stand out. The silvery metals get a black ink wash mostly, while gold and copper gets a brown ink wash..
