But with a great paintjob? About once a decade I have the paitence to pull off a Award Winning(not in Bolt's and those guys class but still pretty darn good) paint job. I think this just might be the guy. First I got to see if I can do the GS work without ruining him. Bunny do you think this post should be melta-ed??? -Q-
I'm a fan of bent up wire for power/lightning/spell effects. You've done a good job, here's some suggestions from my experience using this effect... In general try to get a few good "kinks" in here and there. Sharp angles will give a more lightning type feel like the energy is on a genuinely random path but arcing back to the focus object. When it's wire... it's not done yet... Greenstuff. Pull up *very small* amounts of Greenstuff at the origin points where the energy is blasting from your model. You want it just barely visible but enough to create the effect that this isn't just a wire sticking out of your model. Also do this at any of those sharp angles I was just talking about. Put a very small amount and pull it straight away from the wire. For Power Weapons, create a very thin trail across the weapon anywhere the wire connects back. Bringing the energy to fine points like this will really complete your effect and better disguise the illusion of the wire/paperclips. This effect would probably look cool along your blast too but don't overdo it. You don't want to end up with something that could've been done with Greenstuff alone, you simply want to enhance your wire effect =) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/87121-are-you-still-psycotic/#findComment-1008834 Share on other sites
Foolio_Displasius
;) ...That's impressive. Not just for the wires and stuff, but for making that Chaplain model look good! I was planing on GSing where the wire meets the hand small licks of flame/ power eminated from his hand, being sure to leave the tops of the hand and the fingers exposed. What i dont have any idea of is what to do with the tip. I dont want to put a skull their(its been done a zillion times). I was thinking just leaving it as is, mabye spreading those last tip bits apart a little. AHHHH!!!!!! I have been awake far to long! :( i did indeed mean the sound of those red lightning thingys hitting some traitorous sod and making the sound FTOOMSH! sorry if it seemed insulting LOL no I was thinking you wanted the post melta-ed for having leet speek. RayGun924
Looks great. I'd suggest bulking up the force staff, though. It looks too thin and plain. ~Ray Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/87121-are-you-still-psycotic/#findComment-1009198 Share on other sites
-Q-
I think the skull on the end is overdone but do what makes you happy! It would look cool with each of the wires ending in a fine point of Greenstuff. Maybe all slightly pointing inward to create an overall point to the end of the effect. Nicorex
OMG -Q- im not sure if I have that kind of GSing talent. I can fill gaps and make purity seals all day long, this kind of super fine work, I have trouble with. In a diffrent mini I couldnt get the GS to stick enough to sculpt without it sliding and and crushing itself(the flames I attempted from a missle launcher guy). I will give it a try though. I like your idea about what to do about the tips. I will try that. Thanks for the advice. Nicorex
Yamez and Chronophague came up with this original Idea. I needed to clarify that! -Q- told me some tricks. Unfortunatly my GSing skills just arnt up to the Challange that he prosented. I did give it the old Collage try though. I am planing on going back once the gs has dried a bit and attempt to smooth out the roughness ( I sortof like the roughness though, to me it looks like crackling power, Im sure to a painting judge it wouldnt though). So here are a few pics of the WIP GSing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0595.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0596.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0598.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0599.jpg Since I know everyone is going to ask. The ends of the staff are supposed to look like twisted wood. The fluff behind force weapons is that they are made of a psyco-reactive wood called Narlwood (IIRC). The ends will be painted to look like wood(at least I hope thats what they will look like when painted hehehe). Nicorex
Attepted to smooth the GS work. It looks a bit better now. I also cleaned up some mold lines and where I trimed off the hanging loin cloth/ pennate thing. The GS work is still not spectacular. I think I can work with it now with paint. I just need to decide waht color the power is going to be. :D Some pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0603.jpg And some more distance shots. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0604.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0605.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0602.jpg Enjoy. Any usefull tips on GSing is always welcome! :) I thought about placing a long pennate/banner from the Force staff, but I decided it was already to busy to add more. Do you think he needs more purity seals mabye? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/87121-are-you-still-psycotic/#findComment-1009631 Share on other sites
The Angelus Sanctus
Lookin like you are off to a good start Nicorez :) GS skill after time gets easier (from what ive noticed) as you get used to it more etc etc, you should be (in theory) making flaming flames with the best of them :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/87121-are-you-still-psycotic/#findComment-1009635 Share on other sites
Svarte Hanske
Really cool! Yeah, it did look like some funky power was on display (the greenstuff around the hand). How much glue you used to make that red string stay attached? :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/87121-are-you-still-psycotic/#findComment-1009655 Share on other sites
Nicorex
I know Angel, I have only been working with GS for about 10 years now.. I will get the hang of it someday hahahahaha. Svarte, unfortunatly there is to much glue. the hand itself isnt bige enough to compensate for the 7 holes I needed to drill in it to hold all the wires. Ohh yeah its red wire not string. -Q-
That came out well. Like you said, always think about how it's going to look painted. The biggest thing you can do to get better with Greenstuff is to practice. Cut the slightest bit from your ribbon, trim out the middle where the colors meet and have reacted, trim the outer edges so you have equal lengths. Water your fingers and mix it really well. Use bitz of sprue, spare figures, whatever and think of a few different effects you want to try. Try them at different times after mixing. Greenstuff works very differently immediately after mixing from 15 minutes later, or half an hour later, or more. For some things I will block out a rough shape soon after mixing then go back a little while later to shape, sharpen, or smooth it. Greenstuff can also be sanded but wait at least a full day. 400 grit sandpaper generally works well on fully hardened Greenstuff. One tip for almost all Greenstuff work... you need less than you think. If you glob too much on, use your sculpting tool to cut and pull away the excess. If you keep it sharp you will be able to cut it down to very fine strands like seen in my post above. There have been very few times in my years of sculpting where I needed more than the smallest slice I could cut off the ribbon at once. Unless it's a very large piece of excess I throw it away. I keep a paper towel next to me where I just wipe it off. I always end up with extra when I'm done with a section so this really isn't a waste. It does help keep extra shaved off plastic or metal from mixing in and ruining my detail. Keep the figure DRY so the Greenstuff sticks, keep your tools and fingertips WET. I keep a Dixie cup of water to dip my fingers in but most of the time I just lick my tools. Obviously be very careful if you're licking a sharp sculpting tool and NEVER lick if you're doing fine detail carving with an XActo or razor blade, use your cup of water for that. Walk away. =) When you've got a good effect go do something else. We all want our miniatures done as fast as possible so we can post pics and have everyone tell us how great we are. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble by letting your Greenstuff dry in one area before moving on to the next. Every time I try to save time and move on quickly I end up with my hard work ruined with a fingerprint or fingernail or whatever. You can keep your miniature under a hot desk lamp to help it harden faster. This is a good way to get it to set enough to work on another part of the miniature but I still wait overnight for any sanding. Pros may know better but that works for me =) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/87121-are-you-still-psycotic/#findComment-1009745 Share on other sites
Nicorex
Thanks for all the advice -Q- . I have a neat set of both sculpting tool and dental tools that I use, and a neat set i found that has rubber tips, they are great for smoothing out finger prints. I just added a bit more to both make it a bit smoother and get the detail to a more uniform look. Here are the pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0609.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0610.jpg For the Tip of the power I decided a Spike would work best, So he can use Either Storm or Fury. here is the pic of that. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v107/Nic...es/DSCN0608.jpg This is the absolute last I can do on this. If i add any more it will come off way to much. It might already.. but I will have to see once there is paint on it.
