WIP Mortifactors Whirlwind

Recommended Posts

In between painting my Chaplain and converting my Headhunters, I suddenly got the marvellous idea of starting work on a built yet only semi-painted Whirlwind I had lying around. This is what I came up with. As you can see, this ties in nicely with those rather hated coffin lid-shields from my Headhunters (I still love them way too much to drop them).

On a sidenote, I should probably start a Mortifactors blog soon, rather than creating all these threads... :)

Been a few days since I last updated now...

I've been working just about exclusively on the Whirlwind for the past days, and I'm finally done with the main coulouring and details. Now all that is left is highlighting everything, and add more details; I've built a dead traitor Guardsman with a limb or two to lie by the coffin lid, as well as chaining a skeleton to the front of a Forge World Dozer Blade. All in good spirit!

As always, C&C appreciated.

I would recommend chains holding the coffin on, as I doubt they'd have their ammo crate balanced so precariously on top.

That does indeed seem like a good idea... I'll look into it tomorrow.

And speaking of ammo crates - I did some minor detailwork since posting last time.

Will you be weathering the vehicle? Its a real crisp paint job but i just seem to crisp! Especially for mortifactors!

I love the coffin idea! Have you worked on the dozer blade yet?

It is indeed crisp, it's in fact so crisp it's the crispest thing I've ever done. I'm working on a new tecnique for watering down paints from what I've usually been using, and it pays off. Though it takes three times the time to paint stuff up... as for it being "too crisp" for the Mortifactors, I see where you're coming from with this. I might "dirt it down" a bit, but most likely I'll leave it be as it is. I'm just a complete sucker for Marines being nice and clean - even my IW aren't weathered! :P

As for the Dozer, it's converted and primed - I think I'll be able to complete it tomorrow. No promises, though.

Ihsahn of Emperor? :P

The one and only - greatest band this country ever produced. +30 Cool Points for recognition :P

looks kinda "Half" good at the moment, the reason i say this is because i love the idea, but it looks like if the vehichle moves even a bit oo fast the coffin will just slip off, although if you made chains holding it on it would improve greatly :D

Yeah, I was made aware of that fact in an earlier post... I will try to get something done with it tomorrow. It makes total sense, come to think of it Check this space.

Thanks for all replies, keep'em comin'!

Well, ladies and gents. It is done. Coffin chained in place, Traitor Guard glued to the roof, skulls all over the place and I even got the trasfers looking good. Thanks for all the comments throughout, you have been most helpful! Enjoy!

Nice. It certainly looks a lot better with the missile pods on top: Without them, the coffin looks kind of isolated and random, but with the rack on there it looks more "in-place." Not entirely convinced by the Guardsman's body, I think maybe making him more skeletal might have helped but I'm not sure how you'd have done it. So, umm... Yeah, since I don't have anything helpful to say on that topic I'll shut up now. Love the skull icons, though.

Overall, very nice work.

I get the impression you'd rather like my Land Raider Crusader, too...

It looks nice, I'm sure even Ihsahn from Emperor would like it(well, perhaps :D ). The coffin is a fun touch I think, while I might no agree with the idea of storing explosive rockets inside a wooden box, it certainly is a characterful addition. Painting is crisp and clean, tho you could do some highlights on the tank IMO. Or drybrush some dirt onto the lower parts of the vehicle.

Cheers

That is AWSOME!

I like the paint scheme its well done.

Where did you get the chain for the coffin?

Thankee :)

The chain is from a local hobby store - I just drilled a hole in the tank hull and glued it in there, and filled tha gap with greenstuff to make it look like a natural part of the tank. Cost me about $ 1,50 for a full yard, not bad at all. Difficult to work with, though - paints flick off it very easy, and you need to glue it tight to get the paint sitting well.

Nice One mate, love the guardsmen :)

Thank you!

I was somewhat unsure about the Guardsman at first, it seeming a bit Chaos-y dragging a corpse around. Then one of my painting group told me "Aw, c'mon, you know them wants a lunchbox!" and I was sold :P

Hahaha, I love your Crusader! Cool points for you, and one idea blatantly nicked for me

If Ihsahn were to comment on this, I would die from fanboyism :P

Yeah, I did consider the whole explosives/wood-relationship, but decided to go with character rather than logistics. After all, this is 40K - how are those missiles even going to get loaded into that launcher? As for highlights, they're there, but they're quite dark, the pictures does not do them justice. Blame Tamiya and their finely crafted blends, I guess.

Thanks all for the comments, it is really appreciated! ^_^

It's certainly quite characterful - it fits with the death-obsessed Mortifactors, though I personally still find the coffin cheesy to the extreme. That said, it's cool. The painting is a vast improvement on your previous work, and it shows. I also like the subtle 'Isahn' touch, a nice way of conveying your interests. I think your metals could do with dirtying up a little - though that might be the camera-work.

Any more of your Mortifactors on the horizon?

great job on the coffin for sure. my problem with it is yes the chain is a good idea but the way you have it laying on top of the coffin just isnt right. it would not only get in the way of removing the rockets but there would be no way to put the lid on to the coffin. other then that great job.
