Did the judges this year just decide to give the 'visitors' the trophies because theyd traveled so far - or were the judges all from quebec?

...

basically - yes some very nice pieces, but not worthy of what they won.

...

Anyway rant over - sorry if I offended anyone but IMHO, so far in all this years GD's the judging has been off.

There is always controversy involved with judging, whatever the event. But to make such claims I find very bold. I respect your opinion, but I will point out my own. The Judge was Pete Foley, Masterclass painter for GW. Why did the team from Quebec get som many trophies? Because they were organised, 15 of them have been gathering to paint together and improve as a group for a while now, and they got good pointers from the European friends they made. They basically took upon the European concept of making a team of painters to raise their level, like Team Toulouse, the Spanish team, etc. The Europeans got 11 trophies for the 3 of them. I agree that the Ogre wasn't deeply roothed in the GW ethos (though it was far from being irrelevant) but what the Ogre exhibited was pure artistic flair through subtleties, colors, tone and light placement. Do you want to encourage ethos or painting prowess? These are the characteristics encouraged in Europe, and these are what set European Golden Demons apart from America and make their entries look so different (but not necessarily better). Whether it's good or bad is up to the viewer, but I've made my choice on where to learn from next.

Aside from a few surprises, like No_Remorse getting bronze for his termi squad (Congrats man!) which I would have given gold (so would have J

It's his third Slayer Sword.

And in my opinion the oger could easily be part of the Warhammer Fantasy universe. His clothes look like the stuff that the empire guys were. That is rooted in history somewhere. Just because that oger is not part of the new oger style that came with the army book doesn't mean that it's totally alien in this universe.

The judges accepted it as part of his vision of the GW mythos at the moment they let him enter the miniature in the competition.

Ahh.. I ask because I was under the impression you can only win the sword once

At least it was the rule some 5 years ago AFAIK...

That rule got removed. It's mostly an 'one year bad' and the winner is invited to be guest judge in that year. Not exactly sure about that in the UK but in germany and france it's done that way and I don't know about spain and italy.

Wow, from what i see looks like a good amount of nice quality minis this year. I was unfortunately not able to attend due the high price it would've cost to go for 3 days (and finals, didnt wanna have to miss those :D ). My entry on the other hand was luckier, the local GW manager was able to transport him.

Does anyone have any more pictures? I always love seeing all the daemon entries froma Games Day.

BTW did anyone happen to see what won young bloods?

Ah! TheSovereign!

After reading your bolg, I realise that I met you at Games Day.

I was the volunteer at Accention to power. Not the one on the table, but the one watching the tables.

Interesting.

Hey Sharp, were you the blue shirt guy then? I never really did figure out what those blue shirts meant, I assumed they were people supervising the red ones or something. Anyway, it was a fun day, so thanks for helping put it together.

Also, yeah -- I know my Golden Demon pictures are pretty bad. The last few are better, but they're mostly Xenos (heresy). Sorry about that, I guess I just didn't have the patience! However people have already posted far better pictures of the entries in this thread, so I suggest that everyone check them out.

I quickly posted a new bunch of pictures here, including some close-up shots of the Chaos Lord in Termi Armour (notice its Marine, and therefore board, related :P ) :

Maybe more to come later on this week...

Actually, the pictures belie (sp?) the true quality of the French models. As much as I hate them for travelling over and taking our demons, it was truly inspirational and awe-inspiring to see such beautiful models. I for one am going to try that much harder next year.

Nope, I was a red shirt, Green underneath. I beleive I explained to you how to get into the session.

Blue shirts were "Area Capitans"

Congrats DV8. I really liked watching the progress on your chappy and I'm glad you got recognition for your wonderful piece. From the looks of it you had a tough race. I'm not crazy about the kroot (but, I could change my mind with better photos) I really liked the UM Librarian though. I mainly because of the base.

I wonder about the Slayer Sword winner though. Ethos vs. Painting aside, It seems to me that GW would want to discourage scratch built pieces over using their own minis (from a business standpoint.) Giving it the gold in the open competition sure, but Slayer Sword? Just seems odd. Great piece from what I can tell though.

It doesn't matter that much. The few miniature painters don't give Games Workshop that much money. The money is made with gamers who buy armies and not individual miniatures, sometimes a few squads and some bits.

And from the rules:

The winners from each category excluding staff will be eligible to win the Slayer Sword. The entry that is determined the best of all entries will be crowned as this seasons single greatest entry in all of Canada and its owner will be awarded the coveted Slayer Sword.
The judges thought it was the best in its category and it won gold. And they thought it was the best of the golder winners so they gave awarded this miniature with the Slayer Sword. Nothing odd here.
I'll be willing to go to Chicago..

Me too if it were affordable (what is the date anyhow?) As a side note, what about getting a painting group togeather in the GTA that meets periodically?

Anyways, the Ogre was amazingly painted, but I don't think it was of the GW setting at all, I wasnt even sure at first if it was an ogre, or a large scale empire soldier (a really ugly one)

I'm not upset that the Europeans won that much, I think it is rediculous for the $$ involved to do it, but them winning is cool, nice to see some of the "better" stuff in the world. I was just dissapointed that when they announced the slayer sword winner they said "the best painter in Canada" when the person was not from Canada at all.

DV8s chaplain was good, the Kroot model better facilitates blending than a marine does and the blending done on the skin is no doubt a large part of the reason it won.

That'd be awesome. You can only learn that much more by painting with other painters: new techniques, new colour palettes, etc. There is so much to learn, here and there, from all the various painters in Canada: Angela Imri's free hand, Vincent Hudon's NMM techniques... just to name a few...

Keep in mind that, technically, J

im curious as to what exactly makes him so amazing, i mean hes got good work for sure(his sculpting is great i will admit) but ive seen ncer paint jobs, or atleast what i consider nicer

The fact that it is a freesculpt is a large part of it. It is also not the ogre that is amazing, it is the banner he carries that sets it apart.

You probably have to see it in person to believe it... As Legacy mentionned, the freehand was awesome, blendings were some of the smoothest I had ever seen and as a whole, every colours and details fitted together: for instance, the leaves and base are toned versions of colours which can be found elsewhere on the miniature, lines of focus and direction tying the various parts together (shield/face/left foot, right arm/banner and right foot) and so on...

We learned how to prime properly (yeah, after 16 to 18 years of painting I did learn something there), the difference in between mediums, slow dry and various products you can use to get better results (some were not recommended, while others were venerated), behaviour of paint pigments while using said various mediums (and in addition to water), colour theories, visual language of a miniature (pose and paint used to convey certain emotions or actions), how a model works with his base, metallics (although I personally still belong to the Jakob Nielsen school here, I complemented the techique with a few things he said...), pulling paint to achieve smooth highlights, light theory (highlighting edges is wrong up to a certain point), critique regarding our own work, etc. etc.

Some of the things we learned were gathered from the miniature painting world, some from paint manufacturers and others from other artistic areas (2d painting throughout history, etc.).

For obvious copyright reasons I won't go into anymore details.

It's also difficult to resume it all on a forum like that, but those 3 days definitely marked a step in my 'painting life'. I felt like I actually broke a few bad habits and understand much better why and how to do things.

I can recall a few yrs ago that stratch built zerker won the slayer sword

It sure did, and at the time.. models in the Open Catagory (which it was) were not allowed to win the slayer sword.

I found this year's gamesday very good, even though the french team swept the floor I found the quality of work excellent. Even though my Searing Dragons Commander, Predator, Terminator Squad, and my TombKings Casket of Souls & Queen Khalida Neferher didn't make cut I thoroughly agreed with the majority of the judging. Well deserved. Though I think the sword rule should've been enforced. Winning a sword should deny you to enter again in another GD, it might not be fair to others. Anyway it's an open debate about that. Though I thought there were many great entries this year. The Judge that decided first cut on the Fantasy & 40k Side liked my Tombkings stuff so I was happy. hehe.
