Emperor's Dragons (sala geneseed)

Alright, so i've redone my original DIY chapter. Made a geneseed adjustment and a few more bits here and there to HOPEFULLY make alittle more sense. Sorry if i've made many speeeling mistkes and other grammar. DO however point out fluff mistakes/suggestions/criticism as I perhaps misread something, mind went blank or some other calamity. To set a brief intro, basically the army is a 4th founding from the Salamander geneseed and features techmarine commanders. Each of the commanders was named after a famous dragon of history though I was a bit of a jackass when it came to Tiamat as I purposely gave the name of a famous female dragon to the "manly" one for no other reason than it being a cool name and to give a snicker. If you have any questions about them I'd be happy to answer as well.

I. - Commander Origins.

Perhaps by fate or way of the emperor for that matter, those three individuals had been selected to endure the rigors of what the adeptus Mechanicus had to offer. From the Salamander's geneseed there was to be the founding of a new and unique chapter. Due to the Salamander's weakened state after the infamous Heresy, the exact date had been pushed back from third founding due to the lack of strength at hand to help in the creation on the Salamanders part, this and a temporary hold put on by the high lords of Terra as they took notice of three particular individuals who they thought held great potential. Abraxas, a quiet yet studied individual whose words were few but threatening and awe inspiring. Vasuki, a man of great courage and loyalty, who would just as gladly take to the front-lines to fight amongst his comrades than to wait behind, quite the source of morale. Tiamat, being a hulk of a man he was viewed by those that had seen him fight as a hero or just downright mad. Between the three it seemed they could accomplish any task given and rally with inspiring words, enough troops to horde the enemy on a declared 'suicide mission' had they asked of them. Potential soon turned kinetic as the fourth founding approached and their trainning complete. When they were told of the high lord's plans they talked amongst each other, making a choice that deviated from the traditional standard of the space marine chapter. In honor of their Salamander founders, they formed into three seperate sub-chapters that worked as a community to form a unified chapter and council. It was a take back to how important the Salamanders viewed their responsability as survivors and leaders. They were to train on Prometheus with the assistance of the Salamanders to aid in their creation, but they still lacked one thing. A title. Days of debate followed, deciding upon whether or not to honor the gene seed by a common name or to claim a title of their own. In the end, a solid decision was reached. They would make something of themselves, aspire to be what they wanted, something mighty. It came to them suddenly, the image of the mythical beast implanted in their minds with the love for their emperor just as visible. After all, it could have only been by will of the Emperor that those three had made it THIS far. They would be known as "The Emperor's Dragons." The subchapters being referred to as "Draconis" numbered one through three accordingly in Roman numerals. Like the mythical beast of whose name they used, they would aspire to greatness.

II. - Trainning.

The three men were ready, a chapter of marines before them they spent a great deal of time personally reviewing each man, dividing them up to the commander of whom they thought would be most suitable to their personality. When given their selection of technology to help found the chapter their views were of radical difference. Tiamat, wished nothing more than transports and men to fight alongside him. Vasuki, being the most well rounded and stable of the three desired a formidable force, with a combination of both tanks and transports. Most noticable of the three though would be Abraxas who desired solely, the ancients. Of course it would take time, the tanks, transports could be made easily by the experts at their disposal after all they had inhereited the master crafting skills of the Salamanders and combined with the Mechanicus teachings, construction could go abnormally fast. But dreadnoughts were not something that just 'happened'. The Salamanders and onlookers who remember these events could only laugh at the ambitious Abraxas. "The ancients" would be his exact words. The silence would be broke by one of those within the ranks of the Salamanders. "And where do you suggest exactly, we find these?" Sarcasm apparent with a stifled laugh and the techmarine's desires in question. Why shouldn't it have been though, dreadnoughts were few and far between and required a 'sacrifice' of sorts in construction. It was simple in Abraxas' mind after all, he knew the art of persuasion very well, he had no intention of just asking for them. He'd make them come to him. Fueled by a personal desire and dream, dreadnoughts were essential to his cause. He was out to preserve humanity from death and other unnatural means of which techmarines and dreadnoughts embodied themselves. To top things off few rivaled the three in their Mechcanicus abilities and Abraxas himself was second to none in his eyes. He seemed to possess a certain gift and the few ancients he encountered and even those who bore an abnormal amount of bionics seemed to find his presence around them to be soothing and provide clear mind to those losing both mind and body to those metal tombs. The promise of such reverence, upkeep and knowledge would surely lure those to his cause. While two of the three continued on trainning, taking up even Abraxas' marines they allowed him to seperate with a small group of individuals to seek out and recruit among other errands. One of which had struck the Dragons adruptly. What now? They needed a place to call home after all. They couldn't stay on Prometheus their entire lives. This was another problem he sought to eradicate. He would be gone for nearly all of the chapter's trainning but then again, Tiamat and Vasuki served better for that role in both sources of morale and more open minded to a variety of tactics. Abraxas embraced the art of technology and those who accompanied him were designated to follow that path. Upon his arrival back at their temporary station, he had in possession with him a total of six dreadnoughts to claim as their chapters. Still bearing their old and worn colors, it was obvious the thought of upkeep and use appealed greatly to those who had just previously been stored away. News had came that Abraxas had arrived and before even the old friends could meet eyes once again a meeting was called. The three would shut away as their chapters waited days on end while the meeting proceeded.

III. - Test of Worth.

Finally after days of wait, the three emerged seemingly pleased with their selves. It would be Tiamat who would yell those words "a lair for the dragons!" It had been decided. Abraxas had found a feral, barbaric and un-technologically advanced world to reshape as their own, for if they could not accomplish such a feat then they were not worthy of the Salamanders gene seed. They chose a world in the Segmentum Obscurus that wasn't a relatively large planet and in all honesty was avoided for a lack of better words by all due to lack of importance. Over running the under armed population was no task, the true difficulty would come in shaping the residents to the chapter's will and introducing technology to the otherwise devoid world. Over time slowly the world came together, each sub chapter taking up reign over a section of the planet to call their own and build a sturdy fortress, hidden from all. It was perfect, with their bases beneath the surface of the planet and with no interest taken in the planet by Xenos few knew of the presence enough to notice that infact a space marine chapter dwelt there. After some time order was completely within the hands of the chapter.(World dubbed "Iron Draconis" the original name having been erased so long ago and it's people so controlled that even the dragons themselves cannot recall the previous one. Each subchapter had settled in the element that they found suited them the most.)

IV. - Celebration.

Finally they felt they had accomplished their goal, having made a name and home of their own. A great celebration then ensued. A meeting place arranged in center of those three bases, in which would be the founding of the planet's capital city. It would proceed on for three days, to the residence of the planet it was nothing more than a mere whim that they had arranged the feast. To the dragons though it was secretly known as a symbol of their sucess and triumph. Not only had the people's will been bend to the dragon's desires but they now worshipped both their conquerers and the Emperor himself. Something needed to happen, something to symbolize their achivement. It had been suggested by Vasuki just out of the blue, as the three sat watching the festival from their seats. In an honorary process each subchapter would be renamed as they felt they had earned. Appropriately titled after the environment they had stationed in: Abraxas' chapter would be known as "green dragons," having dwelt deep within the forests. Tiamat, "Red Dragons" having mastered the mountains and volcanoes of his region. Vasuki, "Blue dragons" having taken to the seas that he dwelt within. The Dragons now had their lairs.

V. - Title of Commanders.

The appropriate title given to those commanding a chapter within the Dragons would be as follows: Draconis Mechanicus "------." As in Draconis Mechanicus "Abraxas", Draconis Mechanicus "Tiamat" and Draconis Mechanicus "Vasuki." The correct term for the council that the commanders of the chapters form is "bahamut" named after a large fish of unimaginable proportions in Arabic mythology, taken to show the weight and power at which the council tries to show itself. In light of how laxed the chapter considers themselves, marines amongsts the ranks that haven't quite reached the elite ranks or commander positions are referred to as 'hatchlings', a slang term coined by Tiamat. Not necessarily meaning to be degrading, more so of a symbolic 'big brother' relationship the chapter encourages to it's leaders. The appropriate term though, being simply "baby dragons.' While most regard the title as an honor, there are those with particularly hot tempers who see it as offensive and childish.

VI. - Combat Doctrines.

(Not too much on the doctrines simply because each sub chapter has a different preference. My personal unit would be lead by Abraxas though which would be a PURE shooty unit, lacking any form of CC defense other than Abraxas himself really. Using Maximum dreads, scouts for sniper pinning and little other. I would like to expand upon this later on and perhaps even begin writing short stories if some of you would be interesting in reading them!)

VII. - Beliefs.

Their beliefs have deviated even from the Salamanders, as they view their lives as a sacrifice to preserved and maintain the humanity of their fellow space marines. They follow the codex in terms of rituals and loyalty to the emperor but have their own separate set of rules and beliefs. Having trained and formed the chapter together the three are close friends and shared similar beliefs despite their absurdly different views of military tactics. Each thought of the marines as more than mere worshippers, having been crafted by the very essence of their emperor how could they be mere worshippers? They were sons of the emperor and limbs of their machine God, in which they would tear apart their enemies. They believed in preserving the imperium and it's followers by their own sacrifices of body and soul. Though, the three shared one secret, fueled by their hatred for a particular Xenos, the Eldar. Due to a particular encounter that occured, Tiamat's anger is the strongest while Abraxas sees the dying race as another chance to disect and gain valuable technology. They had chosen their position purposely having selected to station near the planet Ulthwé, for they sought out to destory the race known as the Eldar, to steal their technology and terminate the race they saw as nothing more than a few pesky bugs ready to be stomped out.

The actual logo, hand painted minus the Salamander logo which I used half of.

Mottos:

Tiamat - "We are the Emperor's beasts. Xenos will burn by our fire!"

Abraxas - "The Emperor loves his children, not machines."

Vasuki - "I've only one body to sacrifice but I pay it gladly to save my marines."

A good piece of work, frater.

Curious origin.

So in the end you have with the three sub chapters options to develop three distinct ways to fight (and behave). Nice, you can collect everything marine :D . The cool in it is the chance to inner dilemmas that could arise when battle eager brothers work with potential morbid death cultists as Abraxas.

BTW this confuses me a bit. Is Abraxas way some kind of machine or death like cult? Was it this way it could be a nice background hook compared to other subchapters more in a traditional or even battle eager line.

Thanks for putting up with the long read. I thought it would be different to divide the chapter into different units to give it more variety and flavor. Abraxas is the most of the three 'out for his own good.' He values gaining both technology and knowledge versus victory after victory. It's a bit of irony, as he is a techmarine and praises the dreadnoughts while at the same time, seeks to put a sort of 'command' over the technology instead of letting it completely envelop marines eventually.

I think this is a great idea - I had played around with a chapter that was split similar to yours before - maybe as i start my new chapter i will give it a try again.

one question though - isnt Ulthwé a craftworld that is relativly close to the eye of terror, not a planet?

Thank you, you should start them up again! I'd be happy to offer my opinions and advice considering you spent the time to read mine. Yeah, now that you mention it, it is a craftworld, eh? But I placed them both purposely near the eye of terror and Ulthwé. Thanks again for taking the time to read.
