LT's and pre-Scouts

All right gents, need some opinions on two things. I have been considering for purposes of background and gameplay (granted house rules only) the creation of two additional slots for the Marines. One is a HQ and the other is a Troop choice. They are as follows

LT

WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv

4 4 4 4 2 4 2 9 3+

I have been toying around with the following options.

Increase BS or WS by 1 but not both.

Rites of Battle would apply but for a limited distance; 12 to 18 inches.

No Term Armor?

May have a Command squad but it will have limited options,...no banner, or champion.

Points for this: 55 if he has the increased WS / BS and 50 if the stats stand as they are now.

The second option or what I have been calling pre-Scouts. Its a pseudo throwback to the old 2nd edition days where a scout squad would cost 100 points. Basically these guys are the up and comers, not fully trained but more than willing.

WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv

3 3 4 4 1 3 1 7 4+

These guys would be relegated to the eaiser of missions.

No snipers or heavy weapons.

Points would be 10 per pre-Scout.

The SGT would be as in the SM: Codex.

As always gents, your time and opinions are appreciated.

Shouldn't this be in the Homegrown Rules froum

I think they are a nice idea, but slightly too complicated. The stat line on the LT seems good, your costing seems ok too.

30pts for basic Veteran Sgt + 15points for extra wound (same as Scion of Mars)

Increase BS or WS by 1 but not both.
I would drop this, just making him a cheap HQ should be fine.

Sounds like a good plan.

A bit too much I think, I think a Lt might be given Terminator Armour if the mission requires it. I'm guessing this guy is similar in rank to a Sergeant of a Terminator Squad.

Good and makes sense.

Like I said above, 45 points for the base, plus 10 for the Rites of Battle. Everything else seems good. I'm not sure about the pre-scouts, they just don't feel right to me

I like both sev. the pre scouts could be used in a 750 point game as recon behind your own lines making sure nothing has set down or been over looked with scouts as the main force and a vet sgt in command. the LT seems nice for those 1000 to 1500 point games. wouldn't mind play testing them some time after I return to the Emperor.

The whole point of the pre-Scouts is to have a troop choice option that isnt up to snuff just yet; basically not full fledged Marines, yet. The LT is simply another way for me to game play some of the background I have for my Chapter. That and I dont like the gulf between CPT's and SGTs,...their should be some type of go between. Thats just me though. Its strictly for background reasons and home rules play.

There used to be, but at some point along the fluff line, GW seems to have done away with them into a stylised (and simplified) version of ancient troops.

Ehr...for sixty points I can buy a basic Captain. Why would I want to pay five points less and seriously gimp myself with no real reason?

It's a nice idea, I'll grant you, but it has little practicality or use gamewise. If you're not worried about that, then you and I must agree to differ on this guy. Same thing for the pre-scouts, really.

didnt 3rd edition have a 1 wound space marine 'leader' or somesuch? you could just use that..

i'm also in the "Lt's, Lt-Cmdr's and Imperial Commanders seriously rock!" camp, but i also rather miss the days where their statlines werent set in stone.. eg: you could have a company led by an inexperienced recently promoted captain (bought as a minor hero) but includes a veteran lieutenant.. (bought as a major hero)

(the Imperial Fist IA mentions that the current chapter masters only notable feature is that he is very good at appointing the right people to the right positions.. so there must be chapter masters out there who arent.. not to mention the fact the 40k statline doesnt include vital things like 'grasp of tactics' or 'common sense')
