I will be changing my Chapters iconography.

Well, I'm coming up on being done with my DIY Chapter's fluff and history.

It still needs some reworking, but it has taught me a bit about the Chapter, and for quite some time now I've been working on new concepts for icons, symbols and banners or the Chapter.

I will be changing the Chapter's old "Angel of Death" like symbol with something more appropriate for a high tech, bright and protective Chapter.

I do this for three reasons:

* I need something more appropriate for the DIY

* I'm getting rid of all skulls within the Chapter

* potential GW copyright issues

 

So here is my new suggestion:

The planet is the home planet of the Chapter, that has special meaning to the them.

It symbolizes peace and prosperity for humanity, as well as that the Chapter masters land born operations.

The starry field symbolizes humanity and the Chapters mastery of the stars.

The outer white ring symbolizes the energy of the Immaterium and humanity's mastery of it.

Finally what is outside of it again (which is nothing) symbolizes the unknown and the abstract, and humanity's mastery of it.

The Chapter motto "Capitulus Patria Nostra" means "The Chapter, our Fatherland", meaning that the Chapter is part of humanity, and wherever they are, they bring the Imperium of humanity and it's father; the Emperor. - ie. "Wherever we go is home".

Finally, the halo is a symbol of the angelic, as well as laying protectively around the planet. ie. Guardian Angels. - It also has another symbolic meaning about the future of mankind, but that part of my fluff isn't quite done yet so explanations will have to wait.

Looks good, have fun trying to paint it on shoulder pads :)

when you scale it down just try a really simple version to see how it looks - maybe just a blue filled in circle with a white ring going through it

You might want to put the ring "above" the planet, in some way, because at the moment it looks like the ring around a planet that isn't quite where it's supposed to be. Angels don't have the rings floating around their foreheads either, if you want to get the "iconography" right, then it should be above the planet. Othervise it would like "guardian devils" but with the horns coming out on the bottom of the planet. ;)

 

Other than that it looks really nice.

It will be a bit of time untill I get it on a shoulderpad as Im waiting to rework all the symbols and potentially some of the colour scheme, but it will get there.

Painting it on my 200+ Marines would be horrible, so I will be making my own decal sheets.

Some simplifying will probably be needed, but it's amazing how detailed the decals can get :)

Hm, I've been thinking about that, but the ring needs to stay where it is or be moved down.

I can't move it up for ceveral reasons (protective circle, planet gets to small, and my not yet revealed reason :D ), so maybe I will just go bad and sprout some horns :P - Naaah! ^_^

I see the ring around the planet more as a gloria to be honest ...

a gloria is often more refered with saints rather then angels ...

depending on religion that is ...

and wings are more 'angel' then glorias ...

Space Wolfs, they got the wolfes and they are in space ...

Black Templars got the Templar Cross and they are in black armour.

 

BLood Angels got the wing (angel) and the drop of blood or chalcic as well as the blood red armour.

 

 

so my suggestion would be to try to get the angel and the 'guarding' on the badge ...

 

 

and another banneridea could be an angel sitting at the ports of eden with the flaming sword, guarding =)

It's a nice concept, although I think you should have a simplified version for shoulder pads, and save the 'proper' one for banners/standards :P

Well, the ring is a gloria /glorie / halo, nimbus etc. - it's all the same. :D

The protective Angel wings is one consept I've been working on, I will have to see how it turns out. :P

Good suggestion.

This is sorta in the current badge, allthough it is quite abstract.

I guess I will have work more on my figurative consepts to.

if you want to be realy iconographic you could always make the planet with an angel above it with utstreatched wings (or maybe just wings) and a gloria and above that the imperial eagle =)

 

 

representing that the planet is protected by the angels (chapter) and the angels are protected by the emperor ... =)

yeah, you have to be careful about copyrights. Can you get model decals printed for your armies? I've never heard of that......

yeah, you have to be careful about copyrights.

My current insignia is composed of known GW symbols.

Allthough the Chapter was in the Chaptermaster competition and I'm sure GW has seen the Chapter on a few other occations, let me make it absolutely clear that they havent gone after me for copyright issues and I don't really think they would. - After all, Im a dedicated fan and customer of the game and GW isn't loosing any money due to me...

However, the legal page on GW's site is quite strict and so I've decided to change the symbol into something completely different.

This decision also has grounds in my work on the Chapter and my desision to remove all skulls in the Chapter.

 

 

Griffon Games do brilliant Decals, and they used to do a Blood Raven's set, until GW told them to take it down..

I've heard much good about griffon games' decals, but I will be making my own with blank decal sheets and a super high resolution laser printer. ;)

Well I will be printing it at the design and graphics department at the school I'm working at, and as there are at least four industry level printers there so I'm not sure which on I will be using.
