tahrikmili
I need to do a rock base for an IC mini, but I can't really go out hunting for rocks, so I thought I'd give the cork idea a try.. Can anyone point me to a tutorial about using wine corks? I tried google and the search engine but all I got were cork boards, I need tutorials about spherical wine corks please because that's what I have at the moment  Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/88472-need-a-cork-base-tutorial/ Share on other sites

mario
You will need some cork (thickness about 5-7mm). It should have large 'grain' in it and not just the small pieces. That will simulate rocks/stones better. You need to cut out or break the basic form first and then use your fingers or the tip of your knife to remove little pices of cork from your base. That way it will look more or less natural, depending on where and how much your removed. It's important that you leave no marks of any knife cuts. -Q-
Bottle corks act a little differently than the board type. I don't have any info on using the bottle cork, I've only ever used it for like a plinth type thing. If you're in America you can get cork tiles in either Michael's or Staples near the bulletin board section. They come in different sizes for around $5-10. I can't remember exactly but I think my three pack of 6"x6" sheets was around $6. Very handy to have around as each base uses so little material. Here are some tutorials for using it. http://www.brushthralls.com/Basing2/index.php http://www.brushthralls.com/HordesBasing/p2.php Cork sheets can also be used to make a nice broken concrete for CityFight style bases! Big O
In the US, Target has 4" round cork coasters for $.99 each. They are a bit thick, but I simply take my knife and cut each "chunk" in half to get to an appropriate thickness. Starks333
my base isnt finished, but you dont really need a tutorial: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/Starks3333/Other%20Models/HPIM0650.jpg just grab cork(i have really thin stuff because it was lying around here so i figured hey lets use it) and then just cut out shapes(or break them off) and then break the edges in random order to make the rocky effect stacking them however you want Starks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/88472-need-a-cork-base-tutorial/#findComment-1019794 Share on other sites
rat of vengence
Have you considered pinebark? It makes really cool rocks, and comes in all sorts of natural shapes. Make sure it is well washed, use a blunt knife to split it, and paint it with watered down black. Drybrush from there. I just don't understand how I should do it though? ;) Any pics would be very helpful.. Also, starks, awesome model! The reason I was asking how to do it with wine corks instead of cork boards is because I don't live in the US and I really have no ieda where I can find the boards here (though I'm sure I'd find them if I looked hard enough) and doing them with the cork seemed a good idea.. Maybe I could slice the cork into thin bits and use them as I would use bits from the board, I'll try that. Thanks everyone. Artimis Vergadin
Another alternative to corks is plaster. If you want rocks you simply take some wall plaster (not sure what brand) and mix some up laying it out flat with varying thickness (depending on how thick you want it) and wait for it to dry over night. Then simply crack it at your leisure and BAM you got some good looking rocks/rubble. Works great for senic and cityfight bases. Herald_of_Nurgle
Another note from -Q-, if you are in America you could buy corkboard from places like Home Depot or Lowes for about 7$. I think the sheet I got is about 36" long and 24" wide. rat of vengence
Pinebark is easy, the gardnes around my unit block have it over the top, and I found some nice clean bits under the downpiping. It splits easily allowing you to modify the size, and has a natural looking grain/strata. Heres a couple of examples, sorry for the big pics, I don't have time to edit them and repost to photobucket. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/ratofvengence/vetscout2.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/ratofvengence/chappiejump1.jpg If you really want cork, it works really well. The best place to get it on the cheap is any cheapy shop or Kmart or Target, whatever your homewares shops are where you are. Buy cork heatmats, like for under hot dishes or dinnerplates. It should be 3 to 6 mm thick, and lasts a while. I used that and some paperclips for this guy. Oh, and a bit of copper tubing too. Do note that cut paperclips will go through the skin on your thumb BEFORE they go into the cork, so be careful... :D http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/ratofvengence/Commanderbasedone.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/ratofvengence/CommanderA.jpg Have fun with your various tree bits! Post some pics when you get some done mate. B) RoV Is it just my stupid computer/internet connection/eyes or did the pictures not work? I tried edit, and the img tag is there alright, just like every other time I have posted pics here...strange...
