I'm not sure the effect is really coming across, and I am looking for suggestions on how to fix it... Thoughts?

Also, Here is a detail of the shoulderpad:

Do laser sights even give off ambient light to the sides?

No, not really.... But I am trying to learn new techniques like ambient lighting, nmm, etc and am using these for experimentation... I'd like to do some serious GD entries for next year rather than the usual "Lets see what I have that I could enter for ha-ha's..."

Ambient light around a laser is kinda wrong tho. Laser light travels in a linear fashion, so it doesn't really cause ambient lighting to anything, except when it hits a area which is uneven, which then breaks up the beam. :P

But it looks good, only the red looks more like a led than a laser. :)

Cheers

Ok, so I'm just gonna assume that it looking like a laser is secondary to it looking like it's giving off light.

The way I'm seeing it, it seems like the brightest reflection should be on the side of the scope right next to the laser itself. Right now, it appears that there is only light on the edge of the rim, and it looks like it is actually brighter on the bottom right chunk ( below the laser). It also looks like you tinted the rims behind the laser, which I think hurts it from making the light look like it's projecting outwards. Lastly, I think that you tried to add in some shading that you would normally put in for a "universal" light source. I would think that the light would be just as bright in the cracks, since it's right next to it, and if not just as bright, then at least brighter than they are now.

And this is just a thought, but maybe the light would be more noticable in the cracks as red, and whatever other light source there is would be drowning it out on the more raised surfaces?

I realize that this may be kind of hard to follow, if you want me to, I can doctor up the photo with a diagram so that my jumbled words make sense. =]
