Cityfight Table

Recommended Posts

Well me and my friends will be making a Cityfight table over the course of the summer. Right now we are still in the brainstorming phase. so if you could post some ideas or pictures it would be appreciated.

Basically all we've decided is;

1) it needs to be somewhat modular, I don't want to always be fighting over the same buildings

2) Ruined Imperial City

Anything will be appreciated.

Also once we get started I will also post images of our progress.

Pick up some sheets of 1/2" MDF the size of your table or a bunch of smaller ones. Get a bunch of foam core and a bucket of spackeling compund and make buildings.

Depending on how you do the table up either use equal sized tiles to mount your buildings on or glue them strait to the MDF

Well, my table isn't modular and still WIP, but hopefully you can get some ideas from it.

The table is currently a little further ahead of this picture. All the roads are done and I just added flowing red banners with silver aquilas to many of the buildings. There's more to the table than the buildings in this picture. Yes my friends the table is indeed 8 feet long.

Number one rule to remember is that ANYTHING can be made into something useful. The landing pad is/was a plastic tray that held Baklava (sp?). The double headed eagle statue in front of the cathedral was made from flagpole tops and the tarantula was made from bitz.

While the GW buildings give way for tons of conversions and modularity, it is the hand made stuff that sets tables apart because they are usually one of a kind.

Hope that helps a bit.

Light of the Emp could you please tell us about some of the materials youve used in your city? Specifically what kind of stock was used to make the bulk of the buildings, and what you used for the textured most of the ground surfaces especially on the landing pad and the ramp leading up to it? also wondering what the floors are made out of in the building in the first picture in the right side foreground where each floor is blasted out in roughly the same shape? thanks

Gorgeous city table mate.. that tall imperial church looking building is incredible. Hope to see more close up pics of the project!

I Love Baklava.

Glad you like the table. Good to know that it helps inspire.

Here's a few more pics for ya:

I am including an example of every stratagem on the board. This building has an ammo dump and, when finished, will be fortified.

I might switch the barbed wire for the GW stuff. I also added a forgeworld mech. symbol above the oil cans.

The roof warped a bit with the humidity so I need to fix it...but thats what the banners look like. I'll probably make them a bit dirty too.

The problem is I have no opponents to play against! Anyone near New Hampshire USA?

Not a full table, but pics of a few buildings I've been working on.

I mostly build with Hirst arts blocks cast in plaster. To speed up the process, recast individual blocks into 3x4 inch wall sections. Pic #1 uses this technique with pinkfoam used to add columns & floors. Pic #2 is from a master made from Perfect Pannels.

Connecticutt! They you fly the stars and bars way up there!

Anyway, great table, very inspiring!

Flyinghippo:

1) Look in the past few issues of White Dwarf for some inspiration, especially on using modular boards.

2) The table my buddy and I built was loosly based off of the one at www.drunkdwarves.com . The table is 4x6 with a 2x4 foot area at the end for casualties, dice, templates, books, etc.

3) Try to build a storage area under the table for scenery and maybe models.

4) If possible, try to find local shops and stores going out of business. Alot of the time they sell their display stands, some of which can be used for the table bottoms (hope that made sense, if not just ask).

5) Rails. Put rails around your table and keep the dice from hitting the floor.

6) Use the 1/2" MDF for your table, then use thinner MDF, fiberboard, or plywood for the modular sections. This way you still have a flat surface for gaming mats or other modular sections if you want to do woods, desert, etc.

1) I stopped getting WD a while ago. It's not worth the $10 each to me.

2) the casualty/dice section sould like a good idea...

3) It won't be the table itself, we were thinking sort of GW style...

4) Actually my local retailer is going out of business (which really sucks cause the closest GW is 1+ hours away)

5) I think this would only apply if you were doing the whole table

6) Will do

Lots of nice ideas there...

Aproximately how many blocks do you think would fit on a standard 4x6 table?

Good question. I guess it would depend on the size and number of roads/ rivers/ craters, rubble etc that are dotted throughout the board. I think you could get about 9 blocks on a 6x4.

Cities, well the European ones, are really tight so you could cram some more in and still make it realistic.

To make the blocks more dynamic, you could have some raised with steps going up to them or have some buildings connected over roads via walkways. If you did that all over the board, it would look alot like a hive.

I was thinking of doing sort of a mix between the Halo CE level "Chronopolis"

and gothic architecture. I'd also like to fit in a "stepped canal", not sure how to explain it so heres another picture;

One side will be raised higher (apx. 1.5"-2") while the other will hardly be raised at all. When we dont feel like playing with the canal another piece will fit in over top making something similar to chronopolis

Also is there any easy way to make modular buildings but still have them at a diagonal?

+++ Edit: no hotlinking from other sites +++

Massachussetts! Im hoping to start making a table of my own this summer. I too like the terrain from random stuff; heck, my local GW (Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers) uses electrical boxes (the little wall ones) as small buildings. Looking around my room right now, Im thinking that a small, slant-sided bowl would make a great base to a control tower or antenna. By slant sided bowl, I mean kinda like this: \__/
