Battle Damage on Vehicles

Hi guys.

I've had some trouble with my dreadnought recently. I decided to try a battle damage effect on one of the greave, and I dont know if I've taken it too far. I started with doing an explosion mark on the outside (top right pic), which looked great! Then, after a hair-dryer induced accidental melting incident, I had to repeat the same effect on the inside (top left picture), and I'm not so happy with it. I'm fortunate enough to have a dreadnought kit lying around, but I didn't really want to butcher it needlessly. Does the present state of the greave look OK, bearing in mind it's meant to be a display piece, but still used for gaming? Does the 'double impact' ruin the look completely, or does it still look cool & 'realistic' in a sci fi way?

I think it looks good, the only thing is.. considering how damaged the sides are.. its amazing that the middle (and even the edges of the gouges) are in such pristine condition.

Well If I keep this greave, which at the moment I'm torn about, I'm going to be applying soot coloured weathering powder of that half of the model, thus tieing it in a bit...

I like the way it looks.

A bit excessive, but it adds character.

[edit] From the look of the damage, I imagine it was grabbed by something with pincers. An Ork Killa Kan perhaps. Or a Tyranid Carnifex monsterous claw.

Good idea! I didn't think of that!

I agree with the grabbing idea, though I'm not sure why it would grab the foot. Maybe the dred knocked it down or something. Anyway...

Also, I can't imagine that something that did such massive damage to the greaves would leave the exposed stuff behind the greaves undamaged.

I don't think the damage looks like it was caused by an explosion, it's too...regimented, not random.

Just some thoughts.

I was thinking Pincer too.

Just have it "step" on a torn-off pincer (bug/ork) and make similar damage on the shoulder armor of the dread as well.

I think it will look just fine, as long as you make a theme out of it for your dread. ;)

If you decide to abandon the idea, you can order the witch hunter throne of judgement greaves seperately for fairly cheap.

cheers

Good spot on the greaves. Any idea how easy it might be to carve the Inquisitorial Iconography off these bad boys, so I can replace it with DA stuff?

Everyone's over thinking this. It looks fine. In fact, I was surprised reading people saying you've gone too far. What pops most about it is that it is (relatively) unique, and that's always worth bonus points in this hobby.

If there are things you don't like about it, make a note, learn from the experience, and do your future damage differently. It's one thing to abandon a mock-up after a quick twist of plastic, but painted and ready to go? not worth redoing. There are a zillion different things that could happen in the Dark Future to cause any kind of anything

Cheers dude. I think you've made my mind up for me to be honest. Look on your guitar string thread by the way. Fire is your friend...
