fanboy's Daemonettes - Don't look if you are

Well, I can't lie - my daemonettes were in a sorry state when I stripped them a month ago. I'd first painted them almost three years past, and man... I've gotten a bit better since then.

But if you're under 18, don't look - don't look! You risk having a heart attack!

By the way, all these daemonettes were painted in the span of 3 days (while I was working and stripping a Wraithlord) using my Quantity has a Quality... technique that you can see stickied at the top of the forum.

I know that the picture is a bit fuzzy here - I have some nice clear ones later, so I chose the fuzzy one because it gives the Daemonettes an almost... unnatural glow. I really do like it.

Oh, btw, that's a warp portal out of an old boxed set - I picked it because it matches the Daemonettes. You see, in my army, anything that's 'warp' influenced has the dark blue to white-shaded look... just like that warp portal! Even though I hadn't pulled it out of the box it before I chose that particular color for my warpstuff, it matched so perfectly that I think I'm going to use it from now on to mark the center dot of my Summoning ordnance template.

Here's three of them together. I picked red for the cloths because it stood out well against the flesh and contrasted with the blue nicely. I'm going to have to go over the one on the right one more time with a very light drybrush of Elf Flesh - I don't know HOW she managed to sneak by my final quality control check.

Oh, I made the little "warp waves" around their feet out of GS to give them that "just summoned" feel... I had to darken these pictures too much to get the amount of detail that I wanted (as it turns out, while glossy sealant makes them look alive in real life, it's a right pain when photographing them!)

The one in the middle is my absolute favorite Daemonette - unfortunately, I posed her for the camera looking the wrong way! Oh well... such is life.

"The Daemonettes charge the last defenders of the Webway Portal; all that stand between them and the feast awaiting them in the Craftworld is a lone Wraithlord and a beleagured Farseer..."

So, what do you think, sirs?

Good job, the colors work well together. I see that you are fairly precise with your brush, details are good, I think you should try some new techniques to go further. First thing, I would suggest diluting your paint (more). That means you'll need 3 or 4 layers of paint to fully cover a surface, but the result will be a smoother surface, on which you can apply shades and hilights better.

I don't know your level of experience or involvement in the painting part of the hobby, but have you tried diluting darker red paint (like scab red) and applying it in the recesses of the cloth? That will shade teh recesses, can give you contrast that will make the cloth pop out even more. One technique at a time, try this out if you feel like it and post new pics to see how you progress

Man I am over 18 and I almost had a heart attack B)

I have to say it is great to see Boltman post helpful hints on this site, I consider him to be one of the best painters in this hobby and that fact that he is so helpful to everyone just shows his dedication (sorry to get OT).

Seeing models like this really makes me want to get back into painting, it has been such a long time since I have done anything and I still have a couple large rubber maid totes full of models in original packages lol

Now if I can just heal up my sholder and extra time in my life (ie house, wife, kid etc) then I can get back onto the modeling tack.

ok done rabling now

I thought there would be some rather much modified deamonettes what with all the warnings and stuff. But the "don't look if you are X or under Y, or not qualified for Z" is always a good way to get even those not intrested to look at your post. :o

I agree with above that the paints look a bit thick and that the skin could use some shades for further defintion. But those are some nice gaming quality models nevertheless. :)

Cheers

@ Boltman:

Yer right, the paint is thick, but also a lot of the thickness on it comes from having 6 or MORE layers on specific areas - when I screwed up (and I did it often) because I did the fleshtone first and the rest later, because the secondary colors were all very much darker than the base of the flesh I had to touchup and then blend heavily so that the touchup areas didn't stand out...

It also didn't help much that my hands were shaking and the main reason I was painting was, "I HAVE to get this done. It's freaking half-done already. If I don't get this done now, I won't get it done for a long time. C'mon, kick it in gear!" At one point, I slopped Tin Bitz all down one Daemonette's front... how depressing it is to remember that.

Oh, and the freaking spraycan hit the bottom and all the thick paint just as I was basing these girls. Note to anyone reading this: If your spraycan feels light, DON'T SPRAY DETAILED MODELS.

I experimented with making a dark red ink but the problem is that the cloths are TOO smooth - those cracks really aren't worth speaking of when it comes to ink. The cloths have some recesses but for some reason my attempts to do anything with those failed - three of the Daemonettes have inked cloths, but it's impossible to tell which ones, no?

I was pushing on because I wanted to get to work on my Wraithlord and Wraithguard, but don't like having unfinished projects lying around.

And thanks for the Farseer compliment! :D I have to sneakily post it on here 'cause this is powered armour only...

@ Stonewall:

Best to start small, ya know? Especially if your time is eaten up by other things (and your shoulder is hurt), even spending an hour a week wouldn't be bad. Just tell your kids not to touch the gaming table, watch them carefully, and the first time one of them does it come down on 'em HARD.

@ Chronophage:

that was the general idea! Slicker 'em in so they look at your stuff, whether they like it or not!

@ AlteriousMotive:

I do like Chaos Space Marines - I'd better, my army has LOTS of them. But a careful look at the cost/effectiveness ratio of the Daemons shows that Daemonettes are the best - and honestly, it's half-naked daemon babes. Why shouldn't a person have some?

And the prejuidices of this forum aside, the game would be very f'ing boring if EVERY ARMY WERE SPACE MARINES OR CHAOS SPACE MARINES WITH NO DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 'EM. I get so bored looking at Space Marines... and fighting against them constantly...

The fun thing about those models is with a little green stuff they would be the cheapest implants you will ever see in your life :)

As soon as I have my basement done everythign gets unpacked then it is painting time again  And I don't have to worry about the little one getting at anything for awhile, she can't walk yet :tu:

What make of paints did you use? I started using the valeo paints before and they seems to be a bit thinner so they would go on smoother. Good hint on the spray cans too.
